No, and any that you find are pure spyware. Just make sure you change the port to something like 16886 and forward it into your router/firewall and limit your upload, if all else fails, contact your ISP.

There are about 72,321 resonses I can give you.. How about being a little bit more specific. I don't even know if you are using a PC.. There are two handfuls of torrent getting programs, DSL or cable, router or no, what country you live, Operating system, what the heck is your upload speed max and your download speed, what you know about downloading torrents and what you have tried, etc etc..
One thing you can do is to jump back one page to page #52 and scroll just about halfway down, and there is a repost by me with some helpful tips.. Then after reading, come back and be more specific with a question.

Ok, I've read through most of this thread, but i still can't get my light to turn green. Originally i used BitTornado, i used to download at pretty good speeds, so i didn't complain. But now my speeds have dropped, and i noticed my light was yellow the whole time. I have DSl,linksys router, and windows xp. I know about changing the upload rates, and download rates, i've used torrents for quite a while now. I have set my ports to a different port, port fowarded it through my router and firewall, but still have a yellow light indicating i have a firewall. I have even shut all my firewalls down to test if my ports would be open, but it was still on stealth when i tested it.
What can do? Any help would be appreciated.

If you are really sure you got all firewalls, it doesn't make sense unless your ISP has changed the way it works. I know, for example, if you're with Rogers in Canada, you can only use one certain port.
I use BitTornado myself and it's worked just great for me, of course originally after learning about just what goes on and even what port forwarding was.. I have not done any torrenting lately though. I've used it on a Windows XP computer and also on a Windows SE Pentium 3 computer, both on my home network (used to use the P3 as a torrent getter to not tie up my main computer, then I'd transfer over afterwards).
I'll throw out some stuff. it probably won't help, but I'm a gambler by nature.
This isn't a firewall problem I am going to mention, but one thing that I did do was to shut off in BitTornado, and also shut off in my router, UPnP. This is because the Windows 98 machine (Windows 98 Second Edition) doesn't handle UPnP. It doesn't seem to matter on my Win XP computer..I do get better speeds on the XP machine but the old SE isn't bad either.
My router is a Netgear wireless G 54 Mbps). I used to have a Netgear Wireless B. What I noticed from the jump to the newer router was that on the old one, when I port forwarded, that port forwarding worked for all computers on my home network. Not so with the newer model - I log into the router, and to port forward, each computer needs to be identified and then ports forwarded for only it. I have not figured out how to use the same ports forwarded set for my Win XP computer from my Win SE computer, in other words. But it's OK since BitTornado on each computer has different ports entered in to use.
Some DSL routers are firewalled. But if you have not changed routers I wouldn't understand why it could suddenly be firewalled.
And just in case.. when you change ports used in your torrent program, you probably have to shut down the program and open it again for the new ports to take effect.
In Windows XP 2's firewall, instead of port forwarding, there is an "exclude" button where you just enter in the program to be ignored. Other software firewalls should have this feature.
Stealth Port - since Netgear never uses the word "stealth" anywhere, and all I've ever had is two Netgear routers, can you explain to me the significance of using the word to describe a port? Or does it just mean un-opened or blocked?

Stealth means blocked. I'm not sure if all my firewalls are down, but the one on my comp is down and so is my router, but it still says i have a firewall. I think it might be my dsl modem, its a dell modem, but i dont know how to check it or close it if it is.

Now that's not really good advice. It is not needed, at least not for BitTornado. You can use one port (if one download at a time) orset a port range, but it can be anything, port 59435 or 52567 (whatever). Port 6881 (6881-6889 ??) are well known as a "torrent" grabbing ports, and since most action (not all) using a torrent program or any P2P program is illegal activity, I wouldn't put it past some ISPs to mess with these ports to avoid some possible legal issues at some future point if some copyright owning associations become over ambitious...

Hey everybody just a question. Last week adelphia shut off our service because of my brother downloading a CAM movie off the gnutella network(using bearshare).NOW all of a sudden, after we get it turned back on three days ago, the speed has dropped from about 4mbps to an average of about 29kbps.
So it's not even worth using Bittorrent anymore. I was rolling using ”torrent and getting incredible speeds. Now i cant even surf and D/L at the same time.
Is there something i can do to make my internet run faster and improve bittorrent speeds without contacting my ISP?
Oh and this is the second time they've shut us off in the past year and a half. Thanks

> 29kbps
I hope that you mean that when you use Bearshare on the gnutella network, that you only get 29 kbps. 29 KB/s = 227 kbps. KB/s is used by torrent programs and probably many other P2P programs. 29 kbps is slower than dial-up speed. If it is 29 Kbps is everything all downloads even the Internet, you might as well get a dial-up account fopr $5 or $10.
If OTOH 29 kbps is yourdownload speed only when using Bearshare and the gnutella network, they've probably zeroed in on the port or ports used and are problably somehow filtering/retarding any downloads going through those ports. I wonder if there is an option to change ports used in Bearshare or if it's fixed?
When you do torrents, use a torrent program like BitTornado that allows you to use any ports (there are up to 65000 ports). Use ports like 57456 or a port range 57456 - 57459 (4 ports in this range). Or an even bigger range, then BitTornado will choose a port in the range randomly, thus this ISP will have a harder time figuring out things (you actually only need to use one port if only one torrent download at a time, and most of the time that is how it should be done to get optimum speed). Default torrent ports are 6881 - 6889 I think - you definitely don't want to use those seeing as your ISP is watching.
JKeep in mind for any of this advice I am not an expert, and that I could off the mark with advice or information..

1492kb/370kb...
then i followed the instructions and opened some ports, like 54321 and 48464 and checked them and they were open..i have verizon dsl with westell versalink327w right now so (its a router AND a modem) i am using bitlord...what i want to know is, y is my dl slow? for that matter, does the connection go faster if i dl from more peers? if so, which client should i use? if u need more info, dont be hesistant to ask...

40 KB/s, if you times it by 8, equals the equivalent kbps. 40 KB/s = 320 kbps. But that's not too good. However, it does depend not only on your upload speed, but also how many people in this circle of files-sharers there are - with seeds being better than peers. The circle your are in for that program might well have minimal participants and therefore 300 kbps download might be justified. You are never downloading what you think you are - it's a combination of other's upload speeds that simulate faster downloads, and getting as high as 2 Mbps (2000 kbps or 250 KB/s) is rare, only gotten in the most popular of torrents that have like 80 or more participants and a lot of seeds (seeds are completed copies)... 1000 Kbps (125 KB/s) is considered a very good speed in my opinion. But you have to be happy if you can average 600 kbps (75 KB/s). In almost all cases it is a slow build-up to max speeds attained. And every torrent is different, even if the same number of particpants, speed could be very different per..
And more important than your upload speed capacity told you by your ISP or what you get in speed tests, is what you tell your torrent program to upload at (max speed). If set too low or too high then you can retard your download speed. Your upload speed being 370 kbps, which is about what I have with cable, this equals about 45 KB/s. But that isn't what you use - only use 75% to 80% of that. So try 35 or 36 (KB/s) in the upload speed box.
I haven't used bitlord. I use BitTornado, and it is pretty much simplified. I only concern myself with the default window - upload speed by default says "automatic", and you need to change that to either slow or fast DSL/cable, at which point numbers are entered in the Upload Speed box, and then you just change the number to fit your situation. The box below that is connections, in your situation 5 might be right (4, 5, or maybe 6).
The only other thing is on a 2nd page the ports to be used you should change. One port is all that is needed per one download at a time. A port range would start at one port and open all ports to the end of the other port. 54321 and 48464 is not a starting port to ending port. 48464 to 54321 could be, but that is way way too many. a couple or three, like 48464 to 48466, just in case at some point you know when it would be better to do two torrents at a time, but for now don't. (torrent program like BitTornado chooses one port in your range randomly).
If you have a router (on a home network or other network) make sure to forward ports in it, and also deal with your software firewall. If you try BitTornado you'll start out with a yellow light but it should turn green within a few minutes if you are not firewalled.

Didnt look at the rest of your probs, but GET RID OF bitlord. Full of spyware and adware that will bog down your computer. Also, try the guide in my signature to max out speed with your new client, Utorrent of course ;)

Azureas is very good. Some people swear by it. A few people have had problems with it, it using Java code technology I believe.
Like I said BitTornado is simplicity. Both these use a colored light status system so you know mainly if you are firewalled or not, but different colors cover other stuff too.
All you need to use is one port really (for one download at a time, which is recommended for now, sometimes 2 at a time might be better if they're are only a few participants per. Certainly at most use just one port range of maybe three or four ports. Use ports higher up, nothing below like 17000. There are up to about 65000 ports.
Rememeber that under most corcumstances, you must upload well to download well. This is written in so you don't have leeches like with other P2P programs who only download. If you download 2 or more at a time, it might think you are holding back with upload speed by splitting your upload bandwidth.

Yes seeds are complete copies, peers are like you. However I'm pretty sure that you can still get pieces of the download from other peers. Probably they have to be ahead of you in the percentage of how much they've gotten thus far.
180 KB/s = 1460 kbps. You can do better if all is right, but most of the time, no. If your slowing down a lot make sure your upload speed is not set higher than 75% to 80% of your real maximum (don't use an "automatic" setting for upload speed for sure).

krn5968, 209 KB/s = over 1600 kbps. I can'tt tell you if you can do better since i don't know what maximum speeds your have in the 1st place. However a download speed of 1600 kbps, same as 1.6 Mbps, same as 200 KB/s is excellent aspeed for torrents, and usually you don't achieve this kind of speed except with very well participated in torrents. You'll never get ,say 4 Mbps. One time i reached 3 Mbps. 2 Mbps is doable but rare. Actually you gotta be happy if you can average .6 Mbps/600 kbps/75 KB/s most of the time. You are not really downloading from a single source, you are downloading pieces from several sharer's and then combining the pieces.
Heat will affect your download if your computer gets so hot that your motherboard fries and blows up, at which point your download goes to 0 ...
