In response to Tiberiu, Cox Communications does not block BitTorrents. I have a Mac Powerbook G4 and am running OS X 10.4.4 and use BitTorrents 4.2.0. I have a Linksys 802.11 B/G wireless router and Motorola Cable Modem provided by Cox. You have to open up ports 6881 to 6999 and make sure the router forwards them to the IP address of your machine for the application BitTorrents, which may change periodically if you have the router set to DHCP. Anyways, if you configure your router properly (which takes only a minute) then you will get high download and upload speeds (100K plus). With certain sites I have never been able to get decent speeds and from what I can gather it has to do with the way the sites Tracker is set up. Even if you configure your router properly you may never get good speeds on these sites. Also remember with p2p if there are only a few seeders for a torrent and those people have poor bandwidth you can only download as fast as they can upload to you. Hope this helps.

Bud,
I have cox communications. I had for a while my download speed to 150-179 kbps. All was good until i reformatted my HD. i tried to do everything i did back then, but nothing is working. i have a linksys router. I did the port forwarding, tried using ports 6881-6889, as well as 10123-10130 as another number. I tried with my windows firewall off and then on. When it was working with 150 kbps my firewall was on. i checked to see if the firewall was blocking it and it wasnt. so i am totally lost. Someone help please.

I second bobbyg's comments and if u have a wireless router with 2 or more computers on it u have to asign individual addresses for each 1 & forward ports accordingly, remembering to use the bt clients name in the application settings, if u use Utorrent it doesn't seem to matter so long as your router is upnp enabled. And remember some sites have really slow speeds while others can be very fast, i have had it as fast as 700kb but as slow as 1 or 2 kb so don't panic and be patient, most web traffic is now taken up with torrent traffic and the further u are away from a main internet hub the slower your conection is going to be. Good luck. Craig.

i've got everything done for this port forwarding but currently use bitlord, but thinking of switching to utorrent.
i just cannot figure out how to find the range of port #'s so i know which ones to forward. how do you find this information ?

You tell the program which ports to use.
Usually above 55000
Where are you? Who is your ISP?

Never used Bitlord. Used Azereus, now I'm using utorrent and just love it.
There should be some sort of tools / options menu and in there you should be able to enter what port to use. And then you just pick a number and put it in.

That is correct!
I would highly recomment utorrent. Easy to use and really light on the resources.
With utorrent, its under Options / Preferences / Network Options and right there you enter "Port used for incoming connections" and it's only 1 port, not a whole string of them.
Rogers / Shaw here in Toronto, I think all of Ontario they are throttling back the bandwidth used for bittorrents. If they are doing that where you are, then try using port #1720. They do not do this to that port.
Good Luck
and remember ......... only download that of which you have the original :D

Nope
All you have to do is tell it to use port 1720 and open port 1720 in your router and firewall, thats it.
Wait, firewall for sure, not positive about the router part as I don't have a router, just the firewall. But opening that range couldn't hurt.

Here is a list of applications and their ports. There are also instructions for port forwarding for most routers here and lots of related information on the topic.

I've only got the winXP. I know, it's not the best.
There should be some sort of options / setup where you can either tell it what port to open or you can tell it what program to allow.
With the winXP, you can browse right to the program (limewire, etc, utorrent in this case) to allow that program through the firewall. The firewall will then automatically open whichever port that program is using.

to everybody who doesnt understand how sharing works.
when you are downloading a file from someone,
you are also, uploading it from another peer.
if there upload is maxed out your download speed doesnt matter.
ie. i have 3M cable but if im downloading a file from
somebody with dial up im only going to get 5k if im lucky.
but, if theres 30 ppl in my swarm with dial up i can
get 5k from all of them making 30*5k m/l.
so if your setting are correct.
and your not using port 6881 like it tells you not to use.
just leave it alone.
