Tokijin,
I have followed everything that you and others have told me to do, but when I enter the dvd into PS2 it gives me a red screen and tells me that the dvd is not a PS2 formatted disk. What is going wrong? I am not using your recommended list of DVD manufacturers but I find it hard to believe that a different manufacturer would make a difference. I am burning at high speeds but not errors are accuring. If you could please advise.

To make sure you burner is in DMA Mode, check this link, which apparently you didn't notice before: http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/FAQ.htm Yes rima.com is reputable. I haven't ordered off there, but I've heard good things about them from a couple sites, in fact their in the link I just posted.

Yes it does. You just answered your own question. Don't burn at max speed. Burn at 4x on a quality 8x DVD-R, like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.

The thing about total crap media is very often it will work FINE at first, but 6-12 mos down the road it will deteriorate. Now, u can run your mouth about how it burned OK. Fine by me... but when you lose your data less than a yr, maybe a bit longer, then who will be crying THEN? I use quality media that professional musicians & data archivers reply on. It has a reputation for quality. That is Taiyo Yuden! If you are worried about fake media, I recommend clicking here: http://www.supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-how-to-tell-fake-or-re... Good luck. With media, you get what you paid for!

hi:
I have never backed up a PS2 game. I have been using shrink and decrypter to back up my movies. I have WT Soccer 2002. It says on the clamshell that its a dvd rom. Decrypter in READ mode says its not a dvd so I cant get anywhere. There are alot of .PSS and .IRX files on the game but no .IFO files like on a video.
Is this possibly a cd and if so do I need some other software other than decrypter to back it up? Thanks... REGARDS...

There are no .IFO files because a PS2 game's structure is much different than a DVD-Video. Look on the WT Soccer 2002 DVD label and there should be something that says either CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. Or just look on the bottom of the PS2 disc to see the color. Blue is CD-ROM and silver is DVD-ROM. If it's CD-ROM, you can use Alcohol 120% to make a backup of it.
From Tokijin's ultimate FAQ:
14. Q. How do I burn PS2 CD-ROM based games?
A. Use Alcohol 120%. Open Alcohol 120%. Insert the disk you wish to create the image from in your CD-ROM drive. Click image making wizard. Set the read speed to 1x, check ignore read errors, fast skip error blocks, set the write Method to DAO/SAO, select your recorder, set the write speed to 4x, and set the datatype to PS2. Click next. Once the image is created, right click it and go to image burning wizard. Set the write speed to 4x, the write method to DAO/SAO, the data type to PS2, and select your recorder, click next.
Go here if its DVD-ROM:http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html

The site that you snet me to tells me to uninstall the controllers that are not primary. I am not a fan of unistalling something. The instructions state that "restart your computer and it should load your IDE drives as DMA." Does this mean that on restart my computer will reinstall these controllers? These controllers are:
Intel(R) 82801 GB Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF
Intel(R) 82801 GR/GH SATA Controllers
I am afraid that once unistalled that I will disable my drives or cause other problems. Please clarify what this is talking about. Thanks

Yes that's the point. Once you restart your PC, the IDE channels should be in DMA mode. That guide does work.

- indeed. it's an extremely common problem/resolution

hi:
Thanks so much for the info. The disc is blue and on the disc itself it say COMPACT DISC. Strange that the clamsell says DVD rom! Thats what threw me off...
Ok stupid question because I haven't been following threads yet on the backing up software. Is Alcohol freeware? If so where can I get it. Till I get an answer I will search around. Regards...

Yes I believe you get a free trial. It's a great piece of software, but I dunno if it's worth $60. Either way the trial is free. Download and it give it a try. What other CD-burning software do you have?

Yeah you can use Clone CD. Use these instructions posted by Pimp Dawg:
Clone CD does work great for ps1 backups, mainly because it can burn them at 1x, which is nice. Here is a tutorial for you...
Clone CD v4.x.x.x
Getting the ISO onto your computer
1) Put in your ps1 disc in your computer drive.
2)Open up Clone CD and click the "Read to Image File" button on the left hand side.
3) Select the drive your Ps2 disc is in and click "Next"
4) Click "Game CD" then "Next"
5) Browse and pick where you want to put the image file and then click "Ok"
6) The image file will then be created along with a .sub and .ccd file.
Writing the ISO to a disc
1) Go back or open up Clone CD and click the "Write From Image File" button.
2) Browse and find the .ccd file that you created and double click it, click "Next"
3) Choose the drive your blank CD is in and click "Next"
4) On this screen make sure the "Write Speed" is set to 1x and make sure the "Game" icon is chosen, click "Ok" and that's it!

No you need some type of mod. That info is all over the forums.
1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter.
Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on an 8x DVD-R.
2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341 If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Sony or Phillips DVD-R's. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.
CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/262544 If you really want to do the PS2 backup thing right, pick up some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. I only burn to TYG02, the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. So far I've never had a lag, skip, freeze, or boot failure since I switched to Taiyo Yuden's. With results like that, why would I use anything else?
3. Q. Do I need some type of mod to play PS2 backups or imports?
A. Yes you need a modchip: http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2 Swap Magic: http://swapmagic3.com/ Memory Card Exploit (Doesn't work with v.11 PS2 and later): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289 HD Loader: http://www.hdloader.com.au/hardinstall#prepare or

hi:
You guys have given me a wealth of information to now browse, decipher and consume. This is why I love the forums. I have helped many people in the past and now I am being helped. I remember when I had no idea how to backup my dvd collection and then became quite an expert at it by being helped at this forum. Once again when I am lacking knowledge about a subject (ps2 consoles etc) the gentlemen (and women) of this forum give their time and effort to help a fellow member.
cheers!!

you don't even have to use iso. one of the ways I do it, in only two steps using Alcohol 120%. pop in the ps2 game, bring up alcohol, click on copy wizard, select your destination. it takes about 12 minutes to copy a 4 gig game, once it is finished you will see two files, ex. destroyallhumans.mds and destroyallhumans.mdf. Now pop in a blank DVD-R. Remember that the game has to be under 4.7 gigs unless you want to rip some stuff or use a dual layer dvd. Once the DVD-R is ready, open alcohol again, click on Image Burniing Wizard, it will ask you to pick an image, browse and find the destroyallhumans.mds, select it and click next, then click start, takes about 10 min to burn and then you are all set. Since I have started doing this I have not encountered a single problem, i have the new slimline and swapmagic 3.6. Of the 80+ games I've done all of them have worked. I also have a simple 3 step process to have your game online ready also.

No prob. PennRon. I've found out a lot about backing up DVD's and converting avis to DVD format recently myself. AD is a great site. How bout them Steelers baby, gonna crush the Broncos this weekend and bring down the house in the Motor city.
Here's a little more thorough guide with Alcohol 120%
88. Q. How do I burn PS2 DVD games with Alcohol 120%?
A. Ripping the game to your Hard Drive:
1. Insert your disc.
2. Open Alcohol 120%.
3. Click Image Making Wizard.
4. Check Ignore read errors, select your recorder, leave the never seperate box alone.
5. Click Next. Select a destination for the game. Click Start.
Once the process is complete, you'll get an mds and an mdf file. Click finish, if necessary.
Burning the game to DVD:
1. Insert your blank disc.
2. Right click the mdf file.
3. Select Image Burning Wizard.
4. Select your recorder, set the write speed to 4x.
5. Click next.
Note: I use Alcohol 120% as my backup program for ripping scratched originals. DVD Decrypter can be picky with scratched discs. I use DVD Decrypter to burn the mds file. For purposes of this guide, I'm assuming you are you using Alcohol 120% to burn the game to disc. Feel free to use whatever works for you.
