Here's the deal with media: You can get away with buying cheap DVDs, but you get what you pay for. Two reasons: 1)Dye 2)Label If it has cheap Dye, then it will degrade faster and easier. So in the summer, it will degrade rather than holding up. If the metallic label is cheap if you scratch it, it could literally come right off. (The laser records microscopic 1's and 0's, called pits, into the surface of the metallic media.) A commerical DVD actually has a thin layer of metal between two pieces of plastic, pushed together with tremendous force. That is why a commercially "pressed" DVD will almost always be superior in quality to a 'burned' DVD.

From people I've talked to, Memorex CD-R's are crap. It's the same cheap CMC Mag dyes used with their DVD media. Now I'm not saying that it's the exact same dye they use with CMC Mag DVD Media, just in general it's low quality. I could care less for audio CD's, I have ton of those backed up on CMC Mag Memosux media. But for PS2 games, no thank you. I'm not shelling out $50 to replace my laser because I was too lazy to transfer my PSX backups to better media. I found a 50 pack of MIT Sony CD-R's for $9 at Staples. Sony makes their own media, and even the Made in Taiwan Sony DVD/CD media is decent.

Well I would for your PS2. I don't really care about audio CD's. That's up to you. I have a v.4 PS2, so my laser could go at any time. I'm not speeding it's demise with Memosux.

Give Memorex media to people ya don't like....
as for your friends, you could lose a friendship over a stunt like that. Just remember this catchy little poem:
Oh memorex you made my Mom cry
she archived all her high school photos on your crappy dye
all it took was a little sun and now her memories are all dead
I wish someone sued you dumb b*stards out of existence
so that's why I told everyone on teh Internet....
you suck. kthanksbye

Well I guess it all depends on your computer and the burning process as to whether whatever media is good or not. My computer Is a top of the line computer and memorex works fine for me. In fact I just used one last saturday trying to make a tupac cd and I played it in the car and it was great.

For PS2 game which verbatim media plays better? The DVD+R or the DVD-R? And why do you use the DVD-R instead of the DVD+R?

@tbone2177: I forgot which version of PS2 u have, I have a v12. On a v1-v10, (v11 was Japan only) you can use these 3 methods to play backups: 1) Independence exploit (memory card) 2) M0dchip 3) Swap Magic v3 or higher On a v12-v15, you can only use a) M0dchip b) Swap Magic v3 or higher.
I own SMv3.6 myself. There is no slide tool to use....u need either the magic tools/magic keys -OR- a fliptop. If you have an extended warranty, might want to not void by using SMv3.6. Otherwise, I *highly* recommend a modchip. Check Tokijin's FAQ for a discussion of the 5 different types. DMSIV Lite or Pro, and Matrix Infinity are excellent, Crystal Chip is also just as good IMHO.
if you're a college student, do NOT settle with the RIAA http://tinyurl.com/37oz2z

which would u prefer? modchip or swapmagic+slidecard?
do u have to load the boot disk and then put the slide card in every time u play a backup or can u just leave the slide card in?
a solder mod will just instantly play the backup.....right?

Yes if you use Swap Magic, you must use some form of case mod and swap discs each time you want to play a backup. If you have the money, go with a quality modchip like the DMS 4 Pro SE, Matrix Infinity or Crystal Chip 1.1. For a professional install+chip+shipping, you're looking to spend around $100 total. It costs more in the short term, but there's no rebuilding, patch PAL to NTSC, shrinking DVD-9 to DVD-5, and full multi disc support. For more info on modchips, check out my modchip FAQ. The link's in my sig. Cheers!

Man I think that I if my Swap Magic messes up or something then when I get something else. It'll be the Crystal Chip. But right now my Swap Magic is working just fine. Remember I just started doing this since after Christmas. I think the Swap Magic and this Site is the best thing that every happened to me as far as for my enjoyment. But yeah I might consider getting that Crystal Chip next time I need a mod. I also know that it feels good for yall not to have to keep swapping everytime you put a backup in.

Man I must be a sucker to answer the same questions over and over. Mikaru I know you're new here so I can't hold the collective sins of noobs past against you. In the future, check the stickies at the top of the forums, they contain all the info you'll need to get started in the world of PS2 backups. Check the PS2 FAQ link in my sig, that's where these questions are copied from. Cheers!
1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter.
Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on a quality 8x DVD-R.
2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341 If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Sony or Phillips DVD-R's. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.
CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/262544 If you really want to do the PS2 backup thing right, pick up some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. I only burn to TYG02, the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. So far I've never had a lag, skip, freeze, or boot failure since I switched to Taiyo Yuden's. With results like that, why would I use anything else? The brand of media you use means very little.
The key determinant of media quality is the Media ID. For info on the Media ID, check the bottom of this thread.
Try this link for all types of different info on media quality, compatibility, and console reliability: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia DVD-R Media Quality Review: http://www.cdr-zone.com/articles/recordable_dvd_quality_page_1.html
3. Q. Do I need some type of mod to play PS2 backups or imports?
A. Yes you need a modchip: http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2 Swap Magic: http://swapmagic3.com/ Memory Card Exploit (Doesn't work with v.11 PS2 and later): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289 HD Loader: http://www.hdloader.com.au/hardinstall#prepare or

C'mon now it's not like that. It's just this question gets asked 20 times a day, so I get a little tired of answering it. Now you know about the stickies at the top forums and the search button. If the answer to your question isn't covered there, then post about it. Cheers!
