Yes you need a modchip or Swap Magic to play PS2 backups.
1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter.
Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on a quality 8x DVD-R.
2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341 If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, or Maxell High Grade (DVD+R's). The PS2 laser is picky, these are the only three types of media you should trust for maximum reliability and compatiblity with your PS2. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.
CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/262544 If you really want to do the PS2 backup thing right, pick up some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. I only burn to TYG02, the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. So far I've never had a lag, skip, freeze, or boot failure since I switched to Taiyo Yuden's. With results like that, why would I use anything else? The brand of media you use means very little.
The key determinant of media quality is the Media ID. For info on the Media ID, check the bottom of this thread.

3. Q. Do I need some type of mod to play PS2 backups or imports?
A. Yes you need a modchip: http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2 Swap Magic: http://swapmagic3.com/ Memory Card Exploit (Doesn't work with v.11 PS2 and later): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289 HD Loader: http://www.hdloader.com.au/hardinstall#prepare or

Put your game in your DVD-ROM drive, then go to my computer and click on your DVD-ROM drive. It should tell you how big the game is. Report back with your findings.

Check the Modchip FAQ link in my sig. That contains all you need to know. It depends where you are in Europe. Modchips are illegal in the UK.

Lol I know it's still a work in progress. I've been saying for some time now, that you need a high end PC to even break the 30 FPS mark. I just upgraded to a gig of ram, so I'll see how it does in a bit.
Oh and since Super Trucks is 611mb, it is a CD-ROM based game. You need to use Alcohol 120% for this.
[14. Q. How do I burn PS2 CD-ROM based games?
A. Use Alcohol 120%.
Ripping the game to your Hard Drive:
1. Open Alcohol 120%.
2. Insert the disk you wish to create the image from in your CD-ROM drive. Click image making wizard.
3. Set the read speed to 1x, check ignore read errors, fast skip error blocks, leave the write method alone, select your recorder, set the write speed to 4x, and set the datatype to PS2.
4. Click next.
Burning the game to CD-R:
1. Once the image is created you'll have an mdf and an mds file. Click finish if necessary.
2. Insert your blank CD-R.
3. Right click the mdf file and go to image burning wizard. Set the write speed to 4x, leave the write method alone, set the data type to PS2, select your recorder, and click next.]

How is it fellas??
This may sound dumb or it mey have been answered befor, but i cant be buggered reading all 70 pages! I would appriciate an answer to my question which is: Is it possible to create and play backup games (CD or DVD) on PS2 without a mod chip and without any boot discsetc. Just burn the game and play as if it were the original?? I am a serial cd scratcher and no matter how hard I try, my disks are brokeded soon after I buy them. Im in South Aus, if I need a chip or disc, where do i look, keeping in mind im not a fan of ebay or internet shopping!
Hope Im not being difficult, Cheers fellas!
I wish I was The Chief.

ok i've gone through some of the pages, but not all & my question has sort of been answered, but i'm looking for a little more detail on it
my ps2 plays my burnt dvds no problem, so i went ahead, & burnt a game using DVD Decrypter & the steps listed here, but i get the red screen of the death
anyway around this without getting a mod chip? (soft mod?)

yes, i was just wondering why burnt *movie* dvd+r's (same media, Maxell) will work no problem, but the game won't.
and then again with the modding, is there a way to soft mod (like you can do with an xbox?)

Alright i have a question many people ask from time to time. If a disc has bad scatches but is still playable, which program is the best for ripping it? And if I make that program ignore errors, is there a chance it will write out a bad disc??
if you're a college student, do NOT settle with the RIAA http://tinyurl.com/37oz2z
