I had to reinstall my WiiKey. My first attempt was just suck, and wouldn't play any sort of backup. I just re-did it today, though, and it works fine!

To add to this, the random external DVD-ROM drive my RA gave me a year ago just happened to be an LG model listed in the OP. How awesome is that? :)

I'm currently in the process of backing up my RE4 disc to make sure I'm doing it right.

Well, RE4 burned "successfully", and when I put it in the Wii it shows up as the disc in the drive. However, when I go to run it, it freezes.

I burned at 4x, the slowest it would let me. Ideas?

What if you had software that does it all for you. I mean make backup copies of your Wii games.

I don't mean to sound like I'm promoting it but yes there is software that makes the copies for you and you don't need a mod chip to do it.

Are You Sure This Works? Has it been tested?.. Without a Modchip? if so I will buy this in a heartbeat...

There is NOT a simple software solution or this thread would not exist. Read through it. There is a lot of good information here and it is all valid and tested.

Does anyone know if there has been any other dvd drive proven to read the Wii discs? The GDRs have been discontinued and the few that have them available know this and have inflated their prices ridiculously. An item that new sold for $17 is now selling for over $70 w/shipping.

@Mijobar
Do not fall for Gamemega sales pitch. Even if it did work you still need a modchip to play the backups.

Yeah I thought so too. Thanks. What webstite and modchip do you think would be the best one to buy?

First you need to figure out which chip you have. Enter your serial # here to find out - WiiTracker.
If you have the DC2 (on the newer Wii's) your choices are limited to D2CKey or Argon chip.

It said that its likely to be a GC2-D2C and the drive pins are not cut. I had bought the Wii in December of 2007. Is this good or bad?

Oops sorry had a typo in my above post - meant D2C not DC2 :)

Well it's a good thing you have a Wii - that's the plus side :) The negative side is this is a tougher install. You'll still need either the D2CKey or Argon chip.
Here's links to threads that may help -

Between to the two modchips which one would you recomend of have heard success of Im leaning towards the D2CKey instead of the Argon chip. Also since you said that it will be harder to install does that mean that I will have a greater chance of damaging my Wii

Hmmm a recommendation - well I would probably lean towards the D2CKey w/ FlexPCB. But I have no personal experience with either. Both are newer esp. the Argon.
They have more points to solder so I wouldn't think this would be something for a novice to attempt. Myself I'm below a novice when it comes to soldering :) I would definitely screw it up and fry the Wii :)
So it really depends on how experienced you are at soldering. That or find someone more experienced.

I'm in the same boat as you right now. I bought a new Wii a few months ago after the last one was broken (never let kids take it their friends house - bad idea :)).
My husband soldered the last one but said he won't attempt the D2CKey unless I buy a spare Wii :).
For now I'm just doing research here and there and playing a waiting game to see if anything new happens in the Wii scene - mod wise.

I have now burned 3 games but have 2 questions - please help me!

1.
Eventhough ImgBurn reports "operation succesfully completed" when burning a game for my Wii, the DVD appears to be empty(when checking in Explorer) and I suspect that it is the drive's fault, which I have read often causes that the game is not burned properly - anybody experienced the same? (I use Explorer to check as I don´t have the chip yet)

2.
Does anybody have good experiences with which External drive that burn well for the Wii?

Hope you can hellp me guys!!

Thanks

I originally thought that any drive could burn the image to a dvd, but there are only certain drives that can read the data that has been burned to the dvd. There is just probally something wrong with your drive. I usually just look at the bottom of the disks if there is a contrast from the normal unburned dvd it looks like or you can see that its been burned and looks lighter. Look at it under a bright light. GOOD LUCK!

Sorry I misread your post on the burner.

What is the make and model of it though - it may just need a firmware update.

How about the media you are using too - that can make a diff.

Externals I would recommend are LiteOn and Pioneer.

What you dont know, and what nobody has explained, you cannot READ the contents of a wii disc on your pc, not in explorer not in my computer, NOTHING. You can dump the disc using rawdump and a LG drive etc but u cannot look at what has been written on the disc and so it WILL APPEAR empty - but it isn't
