The substance was a retail DVD-9 yeah, I wasn't aware at the time this was written that it wasn't possible to rebuild it and yet it be "playable" at the same time.
As for the noob who claimed he did it - I doubt it. Any game beyond 5gb that isn't playable after a normal rebuild, probably does require the storage it uses, the only thing I can think of is that he puts it on two discs (of course depending on the game), because like MGS2, the main game can be put on one disc and the additional missions on another disc.
But with the game you mentioned, this may very well be the opposite and simply not possible to do.

Don't use Memorex. Lol, it will burn your PS2 laser out fast.
Try get some Verbatim DVD-R 8x, or if you can't get those, get 16x, or Verbatim DVD+R 8x or 16x.

Hi, I'm cleaning my laser due to reading really slow. I didnt use any alcohol I just used a cotton bud to clean it. What do you use alcohol to clean yours?

A lone cotton bud will probably do nothing apart from scratch the lens. Use "Isopropyl alcohol" also known as "cleaning/rubbing alcohol", don't get any "cleaning fluid" make sure it's the proper rubbing alcohol, try furniture shops and carpet shops or other cleaning shops.
Dip it in, and rub it on the laser in a circular motion and keave it for 5 minutes, it will disolve and take away and dirty marks, just as it is designed to do.

Thanks Mike, I just now ordered Verbatim 16x DVD-R's because they didn't have 8x. But I should still burn the ps2 games at 4x, correct? I have been using the memorex blank DVD's to backup my original DVD's, does the burning out the laser principle count for DVD players as well or is it the fact that ps2 games are played more frequently and require more in depth processing by the laser?

Is there anything else i can use to clean it with? I'm from England and I never heard of Isopropyl. They sell things like lens cleaner disks where theres a cd with little bristles on and it comes with a spray you put on the bristles. Could I use this spray?
Its this, read the customer review. http://www.amazon.com/Interact-Radial-La...8/dp/B00005T3Z4 It says its a 'Can of solvent' or something. Dunno but its used for lenses.

Ripper - Yeah you can use them for DVD Players, those lasers aren't as sensitive, but I'd still use quality media, but that's just me.
Jparkes - No, that's basically just soapy water, is there not any furniture shops or specialised cleaning shops near you?

What are the Verbatim media ID code?
Open "ImgBurn" and insert the disc and look at the right hand-side panel, and look for media ID code and paste it in here.

Hiya, first off, Mik3H, you rock!
I've been successfully burning and playing PS2 backups since October '06 and rarely had any problems. I started off with Verbatim 8x DVD-R and now am using Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R and they've both worked great. I've used both Nero 7 and Alcohol to burn with, and both burn great.
But in the last couple days, I've experienced very long load times with backups (and some not loading at all past the title screen of the game). These backups I have played before with great load times and no problems.
I tried cleaning the lens (and that's worked in the past under these circumstances). But, with the backups taking a long time to load, I've tested regular games and they work fine.
Is it possible that I misaligned the lens while cleaning it? I have a slim PS2 which I bought shortly after they released them. I've noticed the instructions for aligning the fat PS2, but not anything for the slim (it is pretty late now... I might've missed it). Or do you think that my laser's on it's way out? I've had no problems until a couple days ago. Thanx!

It is possible that your laser is on it's way out, but you can try re-aligning it by moving the laser easily just by sliding it up or down, it's much simpler than the old style PS2. But as you say originals play fine, so it is quite strange why backups won't. Can you burn new games or try a new batch of discs or try your backups on a friend's console?

So you dont think it is possible to rebuild CARBON?
I have burnt to ritek data, and tried TDK, with Swap magic 3.8
Still slow loading times and stuttering. Ill try cleaning the lens and see if that helps.

I would reccomend you try it with some Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden brand of DVD-R first.
