rob and gus,
I think this will answer some of the questions regarding media and what TY has to offer. These were the best deals that I found of the 'haunts' I frequent the most. lol. Check it out and see what you may need for media.

i believe you are looking for the "silver shiny" TYs then, be it valueline or the premium line...unless you have a thermal printer, you can not print onto the "shiny silvers" with an inkjet...
those will probably suit your needs just fine IF your only requirements are "non printable dvd-r" :)
and yes, the valueline are cheaper...hell, the premiumline are cheaper than the inkjet printables too :P

Yujenh burn thoses babies at 8x .16x is just to fast to burn dvds movie files
also make sure your firmware is up to date on your drive/burner to handle the 16x media

gus,
Here is the best deal on what I think you are looking for in TY media. These are the 'premium line' 8X DVD-R 'shiny' TY's with free shipping and paper sleeves for $65.99. What a DEAL!! Give this a look and see what I'm talking about. This is for the US btw.
taiyo-yuden-8x-DVD-R-silver-paper-sleeves-combo-200-pack.html
edit: I don't know what the deal with the link function is but it seems to have a qlitch in it for some reason. The link is to www.supermediastore.com and look for the TY DVD-R 8X 200 pack w/ free shipping and paper sleeves.

With paper sleeves and free shipping? If so that really stinks that I missed that deal. I haven't really looked for DVD's in a while because I have enough for a month or two (or 6......lol). With that said though, I would have jumped on that deal with some real aggression. lol. Good to hear from you aabbccdd.

Mort81,
I think that I have solved most of the problems but haven't had the "time" to get into backing up anything serious yet. I have done Lemony Snicket, The Ant Bully, and firewall in the last week and they seem to be doin ok. I purchased Pirates of the Caribbean Thursday and plan on backing it up tonight with DVD-RB Pro and RipIt4Me (Shrink) method. I'll let you know how that turns out later. As far as I can tell it is all ok.
I bought some Sata WD's (250 GB), re-installed WinXP, and a new DVD Player mainly because I hated the Zenith (it never liked any of the backups no matter the format). Now on the other hand the new Sony seems to play them like a dream. Again, we'll see what happens.
Thanks for asking btw. Good to hear from you and have a good weekend my friend.

A need for some advice on burning speed
I'm using BENQ DW1640x2 Philips_DVDR1648P1 Philips_DVDR1660P1 (all with latest FW)
my media:
YUDEN000T02
YUDEN000T03
MCC002
MCC003
MCC004
I think that the YUDEN000T02 burned best on the BENQ DW1640 on @8x then on @4x speed
it appears that the MCC003 "likes" to be burned at @4X then @8X
the MCC002 R perfection on @4X
what do you think about my assumptions?
how should I burn my YUDEN000T03&MCC004(I like my BENQs best)?
great thread

great thread
i currently use Benq DW1650's, and i burn the YUDEN000T03 & MCC003's perfectly at 8x every time, however i never have sufficient luck with the MCC004 at 8x so for those it has to be 4x. i also do 8x on TYG02 & TYG03 perfectly.
edited due to complete stupidy :P

@realrocky,
You might want to listen to creaky, I think he knows what he's talking about. lol.
I also have a BENQ 1650 and a BENQ 1655 (latest f/w of course). They both do fine at 8X on MCC 003, TYG03, YUDEN-T02, and 4X on Ritek R03 media. Unfortunately I haven't tried the YUDEN-T03's or the MCC 004's yet, I have so many of the above mentioned media my wife frowns on purchasing media just to "try it". lol. Looks like to me that you have found what your setup likes anyway. Burn on man!!

@realrocky,
Yeah I've tried many speeds on the media in question (TY T02 & MCC 003) but they do just fine at 8X on my system. One thing that you have to remember is media can and will react differently on various machines. What works for me or creaky may not work for you. I say whatever gives you the best quality backup do that, even if it means writing at 4X on a 16X piece of media. OH!! and definitely stick with the quality media. IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE. I (and many others in this thread) know from experience. lol. Good luck.

...only because i (too often) have MCC004 fail burning at 8x, (for me anyway) they don't seem to be very good, however i don't have any instability issues or re-copy issues with them, they just don't like burning at 8x very much; got a few hundred of them for £5 per each tub of 50 so it was rude not to buy them, i just won't rush to buy any in future. (just checked one of the tubs and their Taiwanese MCC004, not Indian ones by the way)

@creaky,
Seeing that post rattles my little brain. lol. Are you still writing at 4X on those MCC 004's? I really want to try them the next sale they have on them at my local B&M's. Oh, btw are you still using the same batch or a new one to see if the "quality" has improved. Just wondering my friend.

edit: got it...lol. You got that in before I posted.

being as it's been quite some time since i converted myself from (more like prised myself off) 4x burning to 8x burning, i started out with 8x on the MCC004, but most of them fail at 8x, during the burn so i do 4x for the remaining discs (quite a lot left), but only on MCC004, everything else i do at 8x. i know i often read that it's not recommended to burn at such low speeds on 16x discs, however i have no choice with these.
