Herrick--
The only way most drives learn the proper write strategy is by a firmware update. These updates fix any problems engineers have uncovered and typically add new MID codes of discs the engineers have tested and for which the engineers have written specific write strategies. Some new Lite-on drives claim "smart optical power calibration" that, I believe, writes unrecognized discs at a default strategy then checks the results. If the results are good, the drive is supposed to remember the settings. If the results are not good, it changes them the next time it encounters the same ADIP/MID code. (It is a bit like the "auto-bias" settings some cassette recorders employed.)

Your BenQ DW-1655 drive was being manufactured in late 2005 and early 2006. This was before Taiyo Yuden introduced 16X media. TY was late with 16X media and a bit cautious in introducing them. That caution deserves some respect: 16X media are no improvement over 8X and are deficient in at least some respects. The TYG03 are rated at 16X, but not all drives will recognize them as 16X. At least one supplier rejected TY 16X for reasons of incompatibility, not quality; and that rejection was merely because these media were late to market.

That is ordinarily not a problem because firmware updates used to fix compatibility problems regularly. But once drive prices fell through the floor, manufacturers cut back severely--and the firmware engineers were among the first to go. I've lost a lot of friends to those cuts, and those cuts hurt consumers worse! There are three solutions: 1) buy a new BenQ (which is what the drive makers hope everyone does from now on; 2) write at 8X or 6X on real 16X media; or 3) hope BenQ issues a f/w update to the 1655 that will add TYG03 support at 16X. #2 is the best choice because you ought to record at slower speeds on any drive, new or old, anyway. Keep an eye out for f/w updates from BenQ. I wouldn't worry about any quality problems. They are TY after all.

So no matter what Clone or Nero states even if there is a differce from when I burn at 4x-6x to 16X the drive is only set at 4x? why is there a differance when I change write speeds... I did for the first time a movie at 16X and the time was alot faster then at 6x but accourding to that DVDIinfoPro it is stuck at 4X.... at any rate where can I get the firmware you speak of? again thanks for all your help-

Good reading and as always informitive, but I understand what you are saying... what I dont under stand is the DVDInfoPro [both I have posted above]gave me the same specs[4x] for both TYG03 and the TYG02- If my drives dont like the TYG03 becaues of timeing factors thats one thing, but TYG02 have been around for some time [as far as I know-which is not much LOL]

i just tried the way you sugested. that works pretty good useing the TWAIN. i never new what that was for or how it worked. the only thing i dont like about it is the reason i resize it, to get the gray area around the outside of the disc to not show on the new disc.
That is faster than me scanning the disc saveing to folder and then pullong from the folder...
what you mean of the resizing? also what scanner you have ?

hmm im not fellowing you , when you choose import>picture>twain>then from twain its already set , no needing to adjust noting you just press ok , oh and did you change the inner/outter dimetor settings?

inner 18 outter 120 , well regarding the scanner i have the epson620 and on professional mode theirs this option that has a descreening thing which removes all the lines from the original disc when its scanned but again what you mean by that gray thing or the disc?

ooh you mean the shiny part of the edges of the disc ... i was wondering how to take that off without cutting the letters did you find a solution? is the value 20 insted of 18 so it cuts out that shiny thing?

@Gus
to get that part off thats when i adjust it(resize it).i use 20 for the inner setting. but i am useing verbs not tys i think there is a little difference. 18 on the verbs tends to get on the very inner clear part of the dis.

i haven't bought any Ultra sexy "Verb TY's" for the longest while as i have so many in stock, but every time one of you mentions them i do a quick inventory to ensure i have enough in stock, and i've still got loads in, but i usually head over to http://www.svp.co.uk shortly afterwards which i'll do when i've finished catching up with all my AD replies.
