Like Mort, I have had no problems with the MCC 004s on my benqs at 8 times. I'll admit I've burned less than 10 tho. Still burning those ty T02s @8x perfectly.

I know this is way off topic and most likely in the wrong thread but since there are some knowledgable ppl here, I'm going to ask here anyway.
I have very little experience with cd-r media. I want some good cd-r media to back up some programs. Staples has a sale on 50 pks of sony cd-r's right now ($8.00). Are sony cd-r's considered good stuff or should I order in some TY's or verbatim cd-r's?

cincyrob,
I pm'ed my buddy doc ty too. I'm sure he can give me the scoop when he has time. If sony is who actually makes their cd-r's I wouldn't be worried about using them. I thought maybe somebody had some experience with sony cd-r's and knew who actually made them. What is the MID code of those memorex cd-r's you've been using?

The Verbatim Cd's silver printables have been Prodisc that i haven't had any failures with approx 500 burns The colored { pretty blue printables ] Verbs code out as CMC just bought and haven't tested out yetThe last batch of Sonys I bought had about a 25 % failure rate after being played a few times I never coded them out . The last Maxwells were decent and for kicks I bought some Ridata at Micro Center 50 for $4.99. Mainly for the moochers if they work out good I'll pick up some more if not nothing lost cause for the moochers any how. From reading the forums my understanding it's Ty. Pro Disc, CMC mag I tried to find a thread I beleive was by Saugmon or aabbccdd on Cd rating and of course Doc. Chris
Edit I found 2 of the Sonys and they coded out as Sony manufacterer
Edit again I found the Maxwell and it coded out as Ritek

@Mort81,
Sorry buddy but I haven't used the Sony CD-R's but I have used the FUJI branded MIJ and they are the coveted TY's. If you can find the FUJI MIJ they should be TY. Of course it's been about 1-2 years since I bought the FUJI's. The other day I bought some OD brand and they were Ritek, OK but not TY quality as far as I can tell.
On the other hand I have used the Sony branded DVD-R's (SONYD08 I think) and they scanned out beautifully and still work like a charm. About 2 years old now. Good luck with whatever you do.
.........c
edit: creaky you get all the SEXY stuff over there......lol

There is little chance of finding poor quality CD-Rs these days from any of the major brands. In the days when cost was most important, there was at least one manufacturer who cut corners by not curing the dye before depositing the mirror layer. Those discs ended up as the "midnight specials" or "bulk deals" with no famous names attached to them. No major brand uses that particular manufacturer anyway.
Taiyo Yuden insists on its own cyanine dye for CD-Rs, and this dye is less stable than the common phthalocyanine almost everyone else uses. The TY European certificate mentions a 30-year life for the CD-Rs and 50-year life for DVD-R discs while almost all other suppliers show longer life for CD-Rs. Environmental testing on phthalocyanine dye-based discs suggests 128 years of life on average.

i've used all manner of cd's for many years, some utterly cheap and nasty no-name stuff, all of which still work years later (audio cd's and data cd's). apart from the really nastiest cd's giving CRC errors early on (and me then learning to buy very slighty less nasty cd's!) the only trouble i've had with my oldest cd's is some of the black Traxdata cd's having being wrecked by the silver edge 'foil' on the top outermost edge of the discs, coming away from the disc. Also, with some of the nastiest no-name silver-topped discs (many different brands, i used to buy spindles of 100 from everywhere in sight) the foil would come away from areas of the disc. Other than that i've still got 95% of the oodles of cd's i've burnt since writable cd's were first on the market (most of the still-working nasty ones i'd fairly recently reburnt onto decent discs just in case).
Where cd's are concerned you can almost put a cardboard circle in the burner and get decent results, one of my biggest annoyances with DVD media is that it's just not the same as cd burning, by now we should be able to pick up most DVD media and get good results. I guess i live in a dream :)

@Mort81,
You dog! It seems that you have beaten us to the deals again. I might start callin you creaky jr. j/k. Good for you btw.
@JoeRyan,
With out goin into much detail, why are the cyanine less stable than the pythlocyanine? Is it the same dye they use for DVD's? And why would TY insist on using their dye if it may be inferior to another dye on the market? I want to know because they use a particular dye in their DVD's that seems to produce a great product. I don't know you but the Doc seems to think you know your stuff so that's enough for me to at least ask you some questions about this subject. Please no flaming or any rudeness intended here, genuine question and answer time for the n00b. Thanks in advance. If need be link me to the answer or if we need to start another thread please feel free to do just that creaky.
