It's a bare drive, I checked what that meant, unless you know how to work on or build computers no thanks, to many components missing, so for people like me were sh%# out of luck, for those that do great buy I guess.

If you click on the site where the drive was for sale it says bare drive which is highlighted, if you click on it it will explain all what a bare drive is, it doesnt say diffently missing, it says possibly missing, but its a big list, for most computer savvy out there it probably means nothing, you guys probably have the know how where to obtain missing drives, software, nuts, bolts, etc. for nobs like me its to much trouble, rather spend the extra bucks and get it all.

A bare bones drive is just the drive itself. It's usually all you need.
Except maybe an audio cable (?)
For Windows 2k & up at least - the drives don't need any special drivers - they just use the ones from windows. Pretty much plug & play.
The rest of the software that comes with it is oem versions of like Nero, Power DVD, Intervideo etc (I have quite of few of these discs never used). They're not needed for the drive to work. Freeware or software you already have will work to play or burn dvd's.
Just a promo for the developer to have you buy the 'full' version.
A retail version will give you the oem software that's not really needed, a audio cable and maybe a different colored faceplate and a manual maybe. That's it usually. The manual if needed can usually be downloaded from the manufacturers website. Actually most manuals are pretty bare and generic now.
Oh there's the screws but bare bone drives may come w/ that also.
Neither come w/ a new ide cable which if you're using an older one is probably more important than oem software.
I can't speak for aabbccdd but I have a few LiteOn's and am happy with them. Using them for that past few years.
No need now to stock up on them - they're not going any for now. They're the ones that bought BenQ.

@Fredbun,
All the OEM drive tells you is that the drive will be the only thing included for sure. NO cables, software, or paperwork should come with the drive. NOW with all that said I have received a drive with an OEM version of Nero, but that was it. Don't be scared, you should be able to pull your other drive out and stick in the new one with zero hassles. This stuff is so simple you don't even need the EASY button. lol.
@Yujenh,
The LITEON drives are good drives, don't shy away. I have 2, LH-18A1P and the SHW-160P6S, both excellent drives imho. I also have 2 BENQ's and they aren't bad either, DW1650 and the DW1655. Honestly whatever you decide will give you a good drive. The LITEON has more 3rd party support from what I've found, and what software there is available, is pretty good. Give LITEON a try and see what you think.

FredBun,
If you're going to replace an existing drive, there is no reason not to go with an oem model. You can reuse the mounting screws and IDE cable from the drive you're replacing unless of course you want the retail box and name on the front of the drive. You can dl a manual from the website but there's nothing to installing a new drive.
Set the jumper the same as the one you're removing or if you're adding a drive set it accordingly (master on a different IDE channel or slave if on the same IDE channel) in which case you will need a dual device cable or additional single or dual device cable. If you need another cable you're better off ordering a round ATA/IDE 133 cable instead of using the ribbon IDE cable they send with some retail drives.
Yujenh,
Binkie and myself are lite-on fans as well as aabbccdd. I do like my benq too. I have considered getting a plextor but just can't justify the inflated price especially when my litey and benq both perform exceptional.

I really wish I could of read all this when I decided to up grade my drives...Got two bare drives from Meritline and one from Newegg- it would of like nicer if my drives matched but the one that came in the box has Benq one the face plate and the others dont, other then that they run perfect and cannot tell one from the other even in sound during a read and burn.

Gotta go w/ Mort81 on the higher price on Plextors (no offense aabbccdd).
Still want one but was able to get 2 new LiteOn's (external & internal) in the past couple of months less than the cost of 1 Plextor.
My older Litey - going on 3 years - hit the 1000+ burn mark sometime ago - not close to your 3000 mark I don't think yet - but still burning fine even with the newer 16x media.
It's all about what works for you and your setup though a quality drive whether a BenQ, LiteOn or Plextor can go a long way - and keeping the pc clean goes a long way too.

@cincyrob,
You don't like the 16X DVD+/-R's? Send them my way they write like a champ. lol. If you haven't already found this place check it out. I needed a couple of game covers because I buy used/rented games from some of the rental places here in town plus EBGames and sometimes they come without the cover. Link follows. Yes they have DVD (movie) covers too. Most of them include a shot of the CD/DVD as well. Try it out and let us know how it worked.

i have a question concerning multiple burning.. can you do a multiple burn with the regular VOB.vts files or does it have to be an ISO file to do it?

i very very rarely do ISO's with DVD videos, just the video_ts ie file method and use multiple burns very often.
as to Benq DW1650's, i know most of you in this thread are across the pond but someone here in the UK may read this and find it of use - PC World are still selling these drives, but now at £25, so i bought 2 the other day to keep unopened as spare drives. get them while you can i say..
so that's 3 spare ones i have now
