This thread is like a cocktail party with everyone in different, loud, but interesting conversations! You can get a bit of something fascinating, but before you can listen in, something else just as fascinating catches the ear; and you forget what you were thinking about.

MsIrisMG-
If I have this correct, you record DVD-R media on your Samsung R-120 but they won't play on an internal DVD-ROM drive or a Plextor PX-708UF. If that is the case, there are dozens of reasons why, but I guess the most likely are--
1) The external Plextor drive is connected to a USB 1.1 port instead of USB 2.0. This happens very often, especially when computer manufacturers put the USB 2.0 ports in the back of the computer and cheaper USB 1.1 ports on the more easily accessible front panel. If a regular DVD does play on the Plextor, then that is not the problem.
2) The format of the DVD-R discs on the Samsung. DVD-Video IS a format. It is the standard format specified for fixed-length DVDs such as movie DVDs or recordable DVDs that have a defined beginning and end. This format specifies that the total capacity of the file to be written is recorded before recording the file. The other video format is DVD-VR, which came after DVD-Video when set-to recorders were introduced. This format is the other option used for set-top recorders where recordings are made of TV programs that have no pre-determined capacity. Finalizing is required for both DVD-Video and DVD-VR formats so that the lead-outs are written, but DVD-VR also writes the final capacity at this time.

You have to choose either DVD-Video or DVD-VR formats when you begin recording. If you select a fixed time, such as XP 1-hour quality or SP 2-hour capacity, that fixes the capacity into the DVD-Video format. If you do not specify a time setting, the recorder may be selecting DVD-VR format instead. In that case you may not have video playback software on your computer that recognizes the DVD-VR format. You will have to do some checking. (As a side note, if you had been using discs other than TY, most people would have blamed the other brands right away as the cause of the problem.) The Plextor 708 should be able to play a disc of any speed rating after it has been recorded if: 1) the recording is good; 2) the recording meets the format requirements; 3) playback software supports the format on the disc; and 4) the data are transferred from the external drive to the computer software at a rate that can support steady playback. The speed rating of the disc does not matter after it has been recorded. (Every 16X disc I have checked will work at 1X recording speeds on most set-top recorders.)

JourneyFP--
Your problem certainly sounds like a voltage problem from your FireWire hub or in the daisy-chain hook up of drive to drive. I have seen this problem frequently in less expensive USB hub ports that do not keep the supply voltage high enough to meet the specification. The fact that Nero CD/DVD Speed crashes when a disc is played back on one of the external drives is more evidence of too slow a data transfer. Try disconnecting three of the external units to record, then playback on single PX-716 drive and see if that makes a difference. Trying to scan the discs on a different drive, particularly Nero CD/DVD Speed with a Pioneer drive, is adding too many variables to the mix to determine actual recording quality. The Pioneer drives do not show impressive scans with Nero CD/DVD Speed. The discs recorded on the Pioneer drives and scanned on other drives or checked with professional equipment do show excellent quality. That is one reason why scans are not the best way to determine true recording quality.

MR JoeRyan,
while you are here, can you explain or tell us something about those
new 20x burners and stuff. I heard somewhere that somebody mentioned that the techonology for media burning really toped out
at 16x at least in theory it is.

The "rated speed" of a medium is the fastest rate the laser will write to the disc. It is generally at the point where the disc is spinning at its slowest speed but at the outside edge where the disc area is turning the fastest at any given speed. The disc typically begins spinning at its fastest as the laser begins to write near the hub. As the disc fills up, the spindle motor slows down slightly but the laser is writing faster and faster as the lens moves out to the outer edge of the disc. The writing will reach its fastest rate at the very end of the disc, assuming that the disc is written to its maximum capacity. If a disc is not completely filled, the drive laser may not reach its fastest writing speed.

The rates of increasing speed can vary on different drives, and even vary from disc to disc on the same drive. I've seen cases where a 52X CD-R drive reached 52X while the total recording time was half a minute slower than a 48X drive. (The difference between the two speeds on the same drive should have been a wopping 5 seconds or so!).

CD-Rs can reach 56X recording speeds, but the maximum time savings would be less than two seconds, and the disc would cost twice as much because the molding time would nearly triple in order to make the disc flatter. We are nearing that point with DVDs. At 18X a disc can be recorded 45 seconds faster than it would be at 16X, and that only savings only comes at the critical outer edge where discs have most of their problems. (It's kind of like giving up cigarettes so that you live 5 years longer--those extra 5 years are added to the end of life...not to being 21 years old 5 more times when you can really enjoy it!) 20X is the same, but the savings in time is very small.

In order to get DVDs to go faster, several things may be required: 1) thinner, more reactive dyes--which prove to be a bit less stable; 2) more powerful laser diodes--which are more expensive; and 3) recording to the most treacherous part of a disc. There are no DVD Forum specifications for 18X or 20X. Those speeds apply to 16X media that are recorded at those speeds. The good news is that disc manufacturers are tightening up their mechanical specifications in order to make flatter, more stable discs with more precise wobble grooves--and that improves 16X media further. Some may introduce 18X discs, but they will be more expensive and not worth the extra money for the few seconds gained.

The entire issue is an example of the lack of imagination on the part of drive manufacturers to come up with a useful feature other than speed. But since computer magazines judge drives on the basis of speed rather than accuracy, low jitter, and compatibility, it is hard to blame the drive manufacturers. A good 16X drive with frequent and consistent firmware support is far better than a 20X drive that is unsupported.

Does anyone burn over 8x and get good results[on a regular basis]? I have in the last month come out of my comfort zone and been burning at 8x w/ good results... BUT I have noticed most stay at 4x and depending on the rig burn at 8x. So I was wondering is there anyone that has been for a exstented time burned at a higher rate w/ good results?

And if there is a mighty burner out there can you please give me your rig specs.

ChrisC,
Good call on the printer. $62.10 delivered to the house was the price if I wanted it in Texas. Went all the way to the "click here to confirm" stage and backed out just to see if it was true. "It's twue, it's twue." lol.

herrick,
Give another look at this deal, it's legit and the specs indicate it will print to CD/DVD's.

JoeRyan,
I have a couple of questions but don't want to take up space in the Doc's thread. Would it be ok to PM you with the questions and go from there? TIA for your response.

Speaking of Epson printers has any one received the class action check from Epson? I got mine yesterday for 45.00 for purchase at the Epson store..

JoeRyan.. Dvds have 3 quality ratings or time ratings on them, 1,2 and 6 hour. What happens when the dvd is recorded at the different time or quality settings? Example 1 hour compared to 6 hour..

herrick made me laugh at myself when i got into the Epsons I bought the 340 and 220 and decided to get another 2 all in one to put on the other comps. So I bought a 4200 and a 3800 [at Comp USA auction at $25.00 ea.]and before they arrived I bought 72 cartridges for the 220 and 340 on top of the other 72 cartridges figuring they'd be the same cartridges for all the printers. Duh surprise after the all in ones got here I was back on line ordering the cartridges for them.If I would have read and known I would have bought another HP 2175 since I had lots of cartridges for that.Chris

The ink for the 200's and 300's are the same and I buy at Meritline and Super media store on their sales. It's been Ridisc ink that performs as well as the Epson and does great photos my HP is alittle better in my opinion. My last batch I got I think from Meritline Was like $73.00 for 72 Cartridges. I spend somewhere between a $1.15 to $1.40 per cartridge delivered. The Ridisc ink i print the track list on regular Cd's and let it dry for 10 to 18 hrs.I've got to find the last receipt and I'll get back. Chris
Edit Thats what i did I bought 48 fromMeritline for $55.00 a few days later they had 36 for $36.00 so I ordered 72 more

herrick the CD's are regular not printable media on regular printable media they're dry pretty much right away.Except for if your ID is set to small. As far as standing up mine have been excellent even with the younger ones.I've got Cd's that have bounced around in the van that the tracklist is stiil on and readable been in there about a year.I've printed onthe reg DVD putting down a back ground color letting them dry and the next day putting on the text of the movie. They haven't faltered as far as the quality scan and I know the Little Mermaids been played hundreds if not thousands of times over and over if you know what I mean.
