I just placed an order for two of the 1650's, and so what if they're beige?. They still show in stock. Wonder why they couldn't get them in time for Christmas. Oh well, I'm ahead of it now for next year. ;-)

Thanks aabbccdd. I'll forget that idea. Slot load would be a nice feature if they were dependable but there's a lot of bad reviews on slot loaders and not only those made by plextor.

Dear DocTY,
I'm going to assume this thread is still about Taiyo Yuden discs. I really need your expertise to help me figure something out.
I have a Samsung DVD-R130 DVD recorder. I bought, when I first bought the machine, a 50pack of TY 4x Value DVD-R. I wasn't having problems with my finalized discs playing in my computer before.
Now, I'm having all sorts of problems with my finalized discs playing in anything other than my DVD recorder! The only thing I can think of is that I did buy another pack of the same media. A friend of mine said, well check the media, maybe it's bad. But, I told him, everyone says that Taiyo Yuden is the top of the line, can't go wrong, which is why I order them online from supermediastore.com rather than go to Target and buy Sony discs. But now I wonder.
Way back at the beginning of this thread (and I have to go that far back since it's been hijacked) there were some codes you mentioned on the rim or hub of the disc to indicate what kind they are? The label on both say "Value DVD 4x" but I did notice today, that the ones that will play in my computer have either GG or GH on them. Do you believe that 16X discs were packaged as 4x? My Plextor 708UF drive doesn't support 16X, so could this be why some of them are being spit out or read as blank discs? Curiously, some of the ones not being able to play also have either GG or GH. I expressly ordered 4x discs, because I burn at 4x or 2x. My Mac Mini's drive won't read any of the ones my Plextor won't read, either, and will read the ones it does read.
So you can understand why I'm kind of at a loss as far as trying to figure out where the problem lies. So if you can help me as far as ruling out the discs, that would be a place to start, I guess.
Thanks in advance.

hmmmm, odd, I have an old philips drive that can only burn on 2x4 but never had trouble with 8x disc's (ty's), maybe its a plextor thing, anyway it will be an intersting answer.

@MsIrisMG,
I know the gurus (DocTY, Mort81, aabbccdd, binkie7, & others) will ask you if your f/w is up to date on both drives. So first off check that for sure. Next will be what kind of media you are using besides TY and what the code is, even on the TY discs.
The next thing would be to make sure you are getting true 4X media. If you are ordering the 'Value Line' TY's I would guess that you would be receiving 8X or 16X media. Now on the other hand if you are ordering 'Premium Line' TY's from SMS.com you should get whatever is indicated in the order.
The next logical step would be to make sure your settings for your burning software haven't been tampered with to make such a drastic change for your burned discs.
Good luck with the little stuff I have mentioned and looking forward to the gurus direction of help.
.........c
PS..I know this thread seems "hijacked" (LOL) but it's not. The main purpose is still about media, and TY as the focus. Lots to be learned here though. Good luck to you.

Hello, C!
I appreciate your input even though you're not the "guru", but I do have a serious issue about what you mentioned about my media. If I tell Supermediastore.com I want 4X media, they feel they have the right to send me other media labeled as 4X? If that's true, why are these people still in business? I expect to get what I order when I order it! If this is how they do business, that's blatant fraud, they've definitely lost a customer, and I will try to do what I can to be sure they don't do this to anyone else!
Now, the firmware issue should have been resolved with each software update. Currently I'm running 10.4.7. The latest is 10.4.8, but that doesn't include a DVD-ROM drive firmware update, I don't think, but I'll check and see. As far as my external Plextor PX-708UF, it's only rated to 8X media, so it wouldn't handle 16X media at all.
That all having been said, can you maybe explain why 16X media would NOT work? Is there something physically different about the Taiyo Yuden 16X disc that keeps it from being read in an 8X drive? I browsed Wal-Mart's selection of DVD-Rs and all of them say "up to" 16X regardless of brand. So, even if my Plextor or my built-in Matsushita only go up to 8X, why couldn't I still use a 16X disc? At worst, I'd just be using it at, say, half the speed, right?
Finally, while I kind of don't agree about games and hard drives belonging in a thread about TY discs, it's your thread, so of course you guys can do you want to do! I'm just here in search of help, not to police. Hopefully, I can easily find the information I need through the subject line of the stickied thread.
Thanks for getting back to me in such a timely manner. It's all been very frustrating. A person shouldn't need a PhD to burn a disc, you know?

dilligaf9: Hi! I read the thread, and docTY's very thorough explanation of the value line Taiyo Yudens, and in all of that he doesn't mention the speed of the disks sold. Someone else does at the end, but I'm not to know whether they are an expert on the subject or not. I'm happy to know I've still got high quality DVDs, but the issue of not getting what I paid for is an issue for the attorney general, so I'd like to know for sure as far as that goes. I've asked someone else for an explanation on what a DVD recorder or player sees when it sees a 16X disc so maybe I'll learn more about this. Thanks for the input!

MsIRISMG I wouldn't give up on SMS. They are very reliable about taking back products which you have been dissatisfied. Just ring them and explain your problem. They will give you a number to include with your return and after you have returned them they will reimburse you. I have used them for several years and found them very reliable.

aabbccdd, okey dokey, just checking, anyway I found out about some more ways to know the difference from prem and value.
Also, about SMS, I have been dealing with them far about a year and a half now and ever had a problem, I also know people that called them if they did and they always got replacements or money back, believe me its a super site, call them and expalin, they will work with you.

I just set up a used burner with four PX-716A's on a firewire interface, and first tried some Ritek G05 discs I had on hand with abysmal results (half failed to verify after writing, and many skipped and stuttered in set top player). I checked the Plextors' firmware level and found they were one revision behind, so I've updated them to the latest version on Plextor's site.
I subsequently bought and have been testing with 8x Taiyo Yudens from CDRDVDR Media Store (tape wrapped 100 pack, supposed to be the premium ones, DVD-R47WPP600SK) and 8x DataLifePlus Verbatims from Supermedia Store (50 pack in Cake Box, 94854).
So far, I've only burned a couple of Verbatims but about 50 TYG02s and have been getting disappointing results: AVG PIEs typically between 150 and 250, but some averages over 300-400; max PIEs typically in excess of 300-500, often with at least half a gig or more over 300; max PIFs typically only 1-5 but maybe 1 in 5 has a max PIF of 20 or more. Out of 50 TYG02 discs, there were five coasters that either failed verification after burning or skipped/stalled when playing sections with high error rates. (These PIE/PIF numbers come from Nero CD-DVD speed, using a Pioneer 110D because for some reason the Nero program chokes when trying to read from the firewire-connected Plextors.)
Based on what I've read about the 716's and TYG02s, this seems way unexpected. One thing I'm wondering about is that the code on the hub of the TY discs doesn't follow the pattern mentioned early in this thread. They show: 3G621A600157GG. Is this legitimate? If so, any ideas on why such mediocre (or worse) results? I'd assume the TY's were a bad batch, but the Verbatims aren't doing particularly well either. Thoughts?

Thank you, creaky. I need to be able to rule out a media issue before I look at the machine. A label with big fat letters that say 4X needs to be 4X, and it's not MY fault that it isn't, and I shouldn't have to need bifocals to read someone's disclaimer that says "oh, we lied, the speed on these discs could be anything, use at own risk." They need to print the truth on the label, and I'm going to point that out to them.
Anyway, thanks to most for their input! I'd still like to know why it may matter what speed rating a finalized DVD-R has to a computer's drive if at this point it's a DVD-Video. But, I don't need the answer tonight, you guys have a safe and happy New Year!

MsIrisMG...I have used over 400 of the TY Value discs with no problems. Just as aabbcc stated in red they are either the 8x or 16x. No more 4x Time to move on .. I know this will not help your specific problem but on the mechanical side of the burner , being 1 or 2 or 3 years old the laser will weaken with age and use and all the newer 16x dvd media requires a laser working at its best, so the older burners are getting weaker with use.My advice is spend 75.00 or 100.00 bucks on a new burner and purchase the TY Value discs and keep the burns at half the rated speed.16x = 8x and 8x = 4x...HAPPY NEW YEARS to ALL....
