Those SonyX8 MIJ +R TYs are the best there ever was IMHO. Your scores should be a lot higher. Have you looked at the coding on the inner core of the blanks(may need magnifying glass) and compared the numbers to the DocTY post on the first page of this thread? Those will confirm the real deal.

They ought to be giving them away. Not too keen on Lightscribe. Can. Don't. With shipping they come to more than I would pay.

Well, I think I have finally learned my lesson. I just tried to watch "A touch of frost" that I backed up a couple of months ago on a vebatim 8x dvd. Got about 2/3 thru and it started to stall and and then pixels, etc. unwatchable. tried to copy disc two and no go with dvdfab express at about 80% thru. I have been using Taiyo Yudens for the past two months, either 8x or 16x with absolutely no problems. playback has been smooth and error free. I always check the quality with Nero and if less than 90% I discard and burn another. My problem with A touch of frost was a Samsung dvd burner which had outlived its usefullness and mediocre blank media. Using a good(liteon) burner and the best blank media(taiyoj yuden), I have had NO problems with playback. Then bottom line---make sure your burner is up to diate with firmware and is burning accuarately, and use Taiyo Yuden blank DVDs. Of all the blank media I have used, Taiyo Yuden gives the best results. Bar none.

I hear ya bro...I am a TY fan by far, [TYs are 90% of what I burn with]BUT I would not give up on Verbatium, they are very good media...I believe the problem like you said was the play/burn stand alone [which I do not put to much stock in- although their are some here that has had some luck]. I use verbatium for my DL disks and have had much luck...I have burn over a 100 w/ them and I am very happy other then the fact they cost to much- that is because I use easy to use programs... dont give up next to TY ...Verbatium is the way to go

@cziembo,
I think that you should give those Verb's another chance. What did they code out as? You have come to a great place in the discovery of good (or great) media but don't discount the Verb's, especially if they are MCC 003 or MCC 004. Good media in my book. I use TY, Verb, Maxell (hitachi), and some Riteks with good/great success.
Another thing you should consider is the "score" you get with Nero CD/DVD Speed. It is eyecandy really but a higher score means it's better most of the time. With this method of scaning I have many discs that score over 90 that are more than 2 years old. The discs are MCC 003's, TYG01's, YUDEN T02's and some Sony's believe it or not.
I'm not gonna steer you away from TY's because they are 'tip-top' but don't be afraid of the Verb's (DVD+R).

If those Sonys are 8X +R and MIJ, they are genuine TY T02s. They will get great scores.

Yeh, should of been more explanatory on that. lol. I do have some Sony's that are the YUDEN T02's (and TYG03's) but I'm talking about the SONY08D1's (i think that's right, i don't have one handy..:P). They have been pretty good media but I stick with the TY's and Verb's now because there's no doubt.... :)

I definately wouldn't put the blame on the verbatim's, that is as long as they are made by mitsubishi chemical co. and they are +r booktyped dvd-rom (which I doubt they are because I don't think samsung dvdrw's are capable of bitsetting). Verbatim media (MCC) is all I use and they even perform better FOR ME than taiyo yudens. My verbs 2 - 3 years old still play back flawlessly. Now if it's -r media that you are using, I would recommend taiyo yuden over verbatim.
I would be more inclined to put the blame on the samsung dvdrw and it's firmware. They are no good right out of the box IMHO. You should see much better results with that lite-on dvdrw and it is bitset ready to boot. Keep the firmware current.

Ya'll be careful knocking those Verb's with Mort81 around. lol. I agree to a certain extent with Mort81 as I've already stated the Verb's are good stuff especially the MCC 003 and MCC 004. I don't see better results from one or the other, they are both good in my book. :)
Now as far as the Samsung, I missed it in the original post. Sorry. I have the SH-S182D model and the new firmware (SB04) is better.
Here is a link if it's the one you have.

well guys,
it seems like the verbs have slack off a little bit in quality.
there is more and more playback issues and stuff with them makes
me wonder whats up with them. i think the only awesome verb remain
are those expensive data life plus ones.
by the way, samsung is probably one of the worst burner you can
go with.

Media fight, Media fight........ROFL. Any one watch South Park??
Hey cincyrob that's not a good scan for a TY but it should play ok. :) Now that scan you posted in your thread of the MCC 004 is bueno. lol. Just as a side note the scan rob posted is not typical of the TY YUDEN T02 and I think he posted it just to show you that the score really doesn't matter because it should play just fine.
cincyrob please add to correct or enlighten us even more. :)

which verbs are you useing/talking about? your not useing them 16x-r's that code out as MCC03GR20.? those do suck like all get out.
i took 150 of them back and got the +r's that code out as MCC004. the good stuff..
as far as the TY i just used to do The Marine on. it is playing fine no problems as of yet..
i just did it again with Nero recode after ripping with RI4M. scan looks better than the other one but still not that good..
IMHO i just think this drive(liteon shw-160p6s) hasnt had enough TY's run through it to get to know the media and what it likes..
here a scan of the TY i just burned.

I took my MCC03GR20s (250pcs) back to OfficeMax store as well to swap for the +Rs (MCC004). Since they took forever to ship (bought online) the sale was over and they wouldn't do an even exchange (bought them for $7.98/50pcs). So, I had to pay $12.99/50pcs for the +Rs ($5.01 really because they gave me credit for the returns).

Kick up the burn speed on those TY T02s to 8X and see if you get better scores. They love to be burned at 8X.
