Great thread...I've been lurking on this one for quite a while.
I have a 60GB PS3 that I purchased about a year and a half ago...and it has been perfect so far (knock on wood). One thing I will say is that my PS3 is kept VERY cool location with plenty of airflow. I just snatched a 40GB PS3 (that does not read discs) off of ebay for $102.50 plus another $9.29 in tax/shipping and insurance. Best price I've seen so far. This one does not come with any cables or controllers (which is OK, power cables are cheap, monoprice rocks on HDMI cables, and I already had 3 controllers...with one of them being a dualshock)....but it did come with the HDD and caddy.
I'm going to "hope" that a simple lens cleaning does the trick...but If not, I'll try my hand a swapping out a laser if I can find the parts for cheap....and I'll be begging you guys for help!

Wow that's a screamin deal, assuming the console hasn't been opened yet. Another $60 - $70 for the laser (hopefully) and you could be set.

i have about five bad lasers that i have swapped out with working ones and was just wondering about this before i tossed them...
By the way there are several different reliable sellers on ebay for lasers, but DO NOT BUY FROM SJSHARKS903, i REPEAT DO NOT BUY FROM SJSHARKS903, on ebay.... i bought my first from him and it didn't work from day 1,i had to pay shipping to return to get my money back. i bought another and didn't realize it was the same seller , i didn't want to get a strike on my ebay account , so i went thru with the purchase and the laser worked for 2 days only playing games for a total of 1 hour or so and it went out, now he is saying that it was not dead on arrival so S.O.L......sorry for venting....and the caps
I have been trying to sourse the various parts for the laser and it seems hard to find the motors. From what I can tell there are two motors, Hub and Snake motor. I think a small circut board for the motor and then the big control board. Swaping the parts would be easy but updating that chip on the controller board would be harder to do.

A guy that repairs for about the same price as replacement. Worth a check out, I haven't used him

Thanks anyway...

Yeah...I've been trying to "time the E-bay market" for the last 3 weeks. I had been on vaction and had basically spent all day tracking prices...and I had finally snuck in with this one yesterday at roughly 5:30 p.m. CST. I bet a lot of people were caught in rush hour traffic and the strain of work after the holidays and didn't check their e-bay prices. I had another one on my watch list that I forgot to check on early this morning. A fully functional PS3 (minus the hard drive) went for $165! I was freaking pissed that I missed it. I'll look into a lasers soon...and see if I can find another deal. There are some new ones (KES-400A) on E-bay for $65.00 shipped....but I need to check out the seller and also make sure that these are the right ones for a 40GB PS3.

Since you have a working PS3 and you are going to open the new ps3 if the laser cleaning does not work, you might want to try putting your 40Gb laser in the 60GB model to see if it acts the same way. There are many scenerios that can be the problem some related to the board, the IC chip the laser, the motor, bad cables. I thought my 40GB model problem was the laser so I took that laser and put in my 80Gb and was happy to know that it worked and it was the controller board that was the problem.

I'm going to open up the new PS3 to see what I can do with it.....but I'm not going to touch my original 60GB PS3. Knowing my luck..I will end up with two large paperweights and a house fire if I try that.

crasher381@gmail.com is a great guy to buy from, I have bought a few from him for about $80 shipped over night...shipping was at least $20.
Dont use sjsharks903, you will regret doing business with him...
The $47. deal that i mentioned in my previous post is correct but i have to buy 10 or more at once...Has anyone tried the no video/audio fix with the thermial paste and a piece on copper, and had success?
I tried but still no video/audio...so now its on ebay if anyone is interested......http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320329606154&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:US:1123

OK, I have this problem , can I get a little help...
I have a laser that will spin the dics off and on for a few minutes, the laser emitts a purplish blue light but it will never catch to read the disc, all the other lasers that i replaced would not light or light with a red light...so my question for the real experts is , can this laser be good and problem related to something else? or does the color not matter, the laser could still be dead..

This reminds me of a question I had... how are most people checking the colors of the lasers? Do you have clear discs you are using for test?

Well, I guess it's time to post. I've been reading the posts all day (being newly unemployed now gives me a great deal of time), and have so many thoughts running through my head now as I'm new to manual repairs of the PS3 that I need a second pair of eyes and mindful thoughts to help out now. Here's what I have so far:
- While playing Saints Row 2, the game ran fine but there were no voices when characters were talking, so I figured it's probably the laser.
- After rebooting the PS3, I no longer get the little loading bubble on the upper right hand part of the screen.
- I was able to eject the disk, and tried a BR movie, a DVD, and a CD, with no success.
- I opened up the PS3, didn't see a red or blue light coming from inside the drive, but after pushing the laser back, it did go back into position after doing the laser movement test.
- I am able to play downloaded games off of the PS Store.
Should I replace the laser like I'm thinking I should start off with, or am I missing something. Any thoughts would be so appreciated...I just want my baby back :(

I just replaced my br drive, I got the one out of a ylod ps3,
Works fine right now, my old drive did not spin but everything else seemed to work load disks, lens tried to focus etc.
I thought for sure it was the controler board since the HUB motor wasnts spinning
but replaced deck and lens and it works KES400 in 40gb ps3
THe nice thing about getting it out of a dead ps3 you dont have to disasemble the whole drive.
Lots of youtube videos on tear downs etc.

great Job coxwain, thats good to hear and you got official sony part so there is a relief there that you know it will last longer than those replacement parts on ebay.
With these DB drive issues its hard to know when its the problem of the drive, the motor, the laser, the board etc many scenerios.

Your issues sounds very much like mine, Although I bought my ps3 in this condition and did not see how it got there. When I put any disk in the bubble would not even show up, and also noticed that when I put the disk in it did not spin either it came back out in the same position almost, since when putting the disk in it does turn a little. I first took the bd drive from the broken ps3 and put it in my working 80G drive and it worked. So i came to the conclusion that it was the controller board of the 40g ps3. I tried to do the reballing of the nand chip and failed miserably and I think I fried the nand chip in the process(my fault for not having the right equipment). So the only way I was going to actually recover the 40 g was when I bought a working motherboard and matching controller board from ebay, since I had all the parts and I know my bd drive works and now i have a working ps3.
Since you can play demos I have a feeling that your nand chip might not be the problem. I did not try to change the IC first which would of been much easier to do then reballing the nand to another controller board. if you are good at soldering or know of someone who is good at soldering you can try to put a new IC chip on the bd controller board that fix works for some people. If that does not work then something else could be wrong on that board the nand swap as i mention is possible as one person was able to do it, but putting to much heat on this little chip can fry it easily.
Also Since I never had a laser problem since my db drive works I am not sure of the people here who have fixed their issue with swapping out lasers if they also did not get the bubble when loading the disk so i hope someone can jump in and answer that question.

At the console repair shop I am connected with those suppliers refuse to take returns on their dud lasers unless the controller chip is replaced too. They claim the Sony ones are over-volting causing a blowout on the BluRay emitter.
Its a lot easier being righteous than right.

Update that will provide some useful information. So I finally saw the purplish blue light from the laser, and now I am getting the loading bubble to show up. The only thing is that the disk doesn't spin at all. Any new suggestions?

the bubble is a good sign you have updated to the latest firmware correct? it might be you need to replace the whole cage with laser unless you can find the motor alone. There is a guy on ebay http://myworld.ebay.com/fuzionelectronic...:MEFSX:SELLERID for the price of what most ebayers sell the laser you can send him yours and he will fix it test it and send it back to you. One thing that I do not see mentioned is if they test the drive first before they attempt to fix it to know if its really a problem with the drive, you can contact them and ask.

Correct, the firmware is up to date. I'll definitely look into replacing the laser and cage, and possibly the repair guy. Thanks for your help Rich!
