Okay no need to get so defensive. I'm not calling you out, merely pointing out I don't think that article is particularly helpful to noobs. I've dealt with a ton of noobs, and when info gets highly technical, they get lost or lose interest. You can't deny there's a certain level of technical knowledge needed to understand that article. My style is to dumb things down clearly and concisely, so anyone can understand them. That's just my style. We've sidetracked this thread enough. Cheers!

Sorry if I appeared to be defensive ... I was merely stating my qualifications ... and back to something we can all agree on in this thread ... Taiyo Yudens, be they Fuji/Yudens, Sony/Yudens or blank tops are the most reliable media available ... the only thing that's close nowadays is Verbatim ???? PERIOD

Agreed. I don't trust any other brand. TYG02 and Yuden000T02 for me, that's all I'll trust with my PS2. Sorry if you thought I was giving you a hard time. Long live TY!

Yeah I don't know if you thought certain comments were directed at you, but that's not the case. I deal with a lot of teens and preteens in the PS2 section, and often I have to explain technical things as plainly as possible. So don't get sarcastic. That wasn't directed at you. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Back to Taiyo Yuden. Check out my neutered scan.

Thanks. It's not a true 100 though, if you notice I have 0 PIF's. My burner doesn't support PI/PO scans with the official firmware. It's kinda lame that my burner is an OEM BenQ 1640, but it doesn't support PI/PO scans. The BenQ 1640 does. I tried cross flashing it with the latest BenQ Firmware to no avail. I believe it's possible. I think I just need to flash it with older BenQ 1640 firmware first.

interesting comments in here since i've been gone...that is a nice scan regardless tokijin, even with FULL scanning abilities it would be a 99 score if i were to scan it on my benq 1640~ :) it's a great scan no matter how you evaluate it, done well, to the edge too i might add...nicely done~ :)
i'm not going to get specific with my replies here since my last post, but just wanted to extend a warm "welcome back" to my good friend catfreak, we've compared notes on our various scans/burns with the benq 1640 in the past and i can SAFELY say that catfreak PUTS ME TO SHAME in terms of sheer QUANTITY of burns on his benq 1640 compared to what i have done...and i've easily done 400+ on MY benq already...if you want EXPERIENCE in terms of the benq 1640, look no further than catfreak :) good to see ya around buddy~
glad to see the "regulars" pop in here frequently, i don't have time to contribute as much as i used to...but as it is with life...when i have time, i have PLENTY of it to spend literallly HOURS on AD, when i don't..i just post a few times to respond to specific questions...nice work by everyone else in here in helping the ones with questions/comments, thank you all~
good evening, until next time...have a good one and BURN ON TYs~!

Here's a review from CD Freaks about your Plex 760-A Doc. It looks pretty promising, especially considering this was with the initial firmware release.

i took that into consideration before i posted, hence, the reason WHY i ASSUMED it would be a score of 99 running a complete scan on that backup he made @4x/@8x with PI/PO support~ it could just as well be a perfect 100% score, i was taking into account that the PI errors would knock it down 1 point, so i gave it an APPRoXIMATION of "99" :)
as i don't have that disc in my hands to do the test myself, my quality score GUESS is "99" :P

@teflonmyk: You know, before I came here and found out how to burn quality discs, I used TDK DVD-Rs (Printable White, 8x) and was really quite happy with them. I don't recall burning any coasters, but I'm sure if I did, it was minimal (maybe one or two, tops, on about 75 or so). Still, it's a "smart" move for them, considering there are others out there who make much better media.
Now, onto my next thing... I did a bit of practicing last night and backed up some PS2 games. I'm using the YUDEN000T02's, burning the first at 6x, the second at 8x (for some reason my Lite-On 1693S will not burn at 4x. If anyone has some ideas why that is, I'd be grateful). Oddly enough, doing a quickscan, my 6x was only 93% quality, while my 8x came out at 100%, using a quickscan with all the options checked. My drive does scan for PI Failures, and found none on the entire disc! I was actually shocked at the results, but it does hold with what docTY said, that if you're using good media, and not messing around with too much multitasking or background programs, you can produce good quality burns at max speed.
Anyway, the reason I'm posting this is just to ask anyone out there if they have any suggestions on an update I might be missing that would improve my quality and/or allow me to burn at 4x speed. I was sort of hoping to compare the 4x to the 8x, and it seems a bit odd that my burner won't support 4x when most other people seem to burn this media at that speed. Oh, and I'm using what I believe to be the latest firmware: KS0A.
Thanks in advance!

This oughta make you smile...
IT SURE DID~ :) a BIG BIG GRIN at that news~! about damn time~ LOL
hey, i got nothing against TDK (the company) itself...and in stepping out of the dvd manufacturing market, i HOPE their restructuring will ultimately benefit them AS A WHOLE...cuz God knows how much i DESPISE their dvd-media~ :)
good article buddy, made my day~ LOL...as to the closing statement by the guy who posted it to cdfreaks news, i'd have to DISAGREE that the TDKs' were "quite good" HAHAHAHA
@delateur
both teflonmyk and i BOTH own that Liteon SOHW-1693S, teflonmyk got his before me and i actually picked one up based on HIS recommendation...i use KSOB firmware myself, however, i haven't burned ANYTHING @4x in so long i don't even know if that drive will do it on quality media...i know you want to burn @4x for "comparative reasons" just so you can see the difference in quality between the 2 burn speeds, but, if that's what it takes to quench your thirst, i wish you best of luck...for well over 2 years now, i've been burning ALL my Taiyo Yudens and Verb MCCs @8x with my current setups, while i don't recommend everyone do the same as @4x is STILL regarded as the "norm" or "rule of thumb" around here, but for me as well as MANY OTHER experienced users, we've moved up the burn speed, on quality media using quality drives, burning @4x is NO LONGER necessary, if you choose to burn at that speed, so be it and i will not argue with someone who insists they burn everything @4x with great results...use what works best FOR YOU and let no one tell you otherwise~ :)
good day to you all
docTY~
p.s. TDK media SUX~ LOL *just had to get that off my chest*

@docTY
Thank you much for the information. I had no idea they'd put out another firmware, but it's encouraging to see they continue to upgrade a drive that I have been VERY happy with ever since I got it (which was about five months ago, I believe). It's also great to hear your experiences with the drive, since everyone knows you're probably one of the most frequent burner personages on the planet. ;) That you use my model drive and have had so much success with it using the same media is VERY encouraging. So, after I install the latest firmware (thanks for that bit of information!), it looks like I'll be set.
I'd just like to toss out a quick thank you to everyone on these forums who contribute so much great information. I'm not going to name names, as I think that just detracts from those posters who probably helped me out many times, but my memory failed to recall. This is just another example of why this forum is THE place to go if you have any issues at all with making reliable backups.
Cheers!
PS: Just so nobody gets confused, I am NOT recommending TDK DVDs for burning. I haven't had them long enough to know if they'll stand the test of time, and that, along with the initial quality of the burn itself, is a big part of what constitutes good media. I'm sure if docTY dislikes the media, it's because they are not reliable in one or both of these areas. I, for one, will NEVER spend money on anything besides Taiyo Yuden media from now on. I've experimented with a few burns using them, and you can definitely tell a difference in how a perfectly burned disc spins up and reads versus one that is merely passable.
PPS: There is an even newer, experimental (read: not endorsed by Lite-On) firmware for the 1693S, version KC4B, if anyone is interested. It has been tested to provide significant benefits beyond what the latest official firmware (KS0B, as stated by docTY) provides. The information on this version is given here: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=152583 The goal of this modified firmware is to produce lower PIFs, and the firmware has been successful at this. It probably doesn't apply to anyone reading this thread, but for those using "less than optimal" media, like me and my remaining TDK DVD-Rs, it should produce a much higher quality burn than you'd normally get. The better the media, the lower the impact of this optimized firmware.
Cheers!

hi DOC @ delateur :)
i've got the 1693s as well, got it just before creaky had his, and mine is the same. It seems to pick the optimum burn speed for the disc it is presented with.
all i can say is that, have no worries about it, i haven't had a bad burn from it yet, and none of them were less than 6x.

Hey everyone! Is it true that Taiyo Yuden have a patent on the frosty hub center? Or is there imitation media with the TY-style center to watch out for? Thanks!
