So right now there is no disc in it and it thinks there is one there?
If that's the case then check the flap like I said, if it's stuck open it will think a disc has been inserted.. if it's not stuck open then you may have not reconnected the wire from the disc insertion sensor (the little red and black wires with the tiny yellow end that you need to unplug to easily remove the top half of the drive) or if you're really unlucky that part was damaged..
I replaced a laser in a PS3 today and thinking about your issues I noticed that the white arm that is on top of that gray piece moves easily and doesn't 'spring' back, if it's in the wrong position when you put the top half of the drive back on it will prevent the actuators from dropping the white round disc in place.
If you want to 'see' better what is happening you can just leave the top metal cover off and insert the disc, you'll be able to see all the bits move.
Here's someone's youtube video where you can see it with the cover off
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59CHNMuTDc8
If you're in the toronto, ontario area and are stumped I could take a look at it for you.

I was talking to the owner of a videogame store in town and he had a PS3 which had distorted wavy lines in the video and amazingly he fixed it by cutting off the ground pin from the power cable..
I hesitate to recommend that though, try using a different power outlet first, if that doesn't work then test with a spare cable..
It might also be solved by just attaching a ferrite ring around the power cable too.

he dont know squat!
You all run your mopuths too much, what i said works. My fan doesnt even hit mid speed anymore, less lagg, faster XMB load times, and even better gameplay. You can all kiss my A$$, i have already fixed other peoples PS3s and they say that they run better than before. Mine will not YLOD again because it stays way cooler,so while you bleep keep coming back here looking for temp fixes, ill be playin my PS3 with confidence that it will not crash again. And im sorry for your ignorance.

Well I have 2 PS3s at my house right now .. both using the same cords and power outlets and the one (my friend lent me) works perfectly with same outlets and cords .. But MY Ps3 that had YLOD whcih i recently fixed is having that problem .. i think it may be something to do with HDMI or maybe something gone wrong IN the ps3 while i was fixing it?

The problem isn't with the cord itself, if the PS3 now has a poor ground due to whatever you were doing it can start a type of feedback loop which distorts the video.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_loop_(electricity)
I'm not saying that's 100% for sure what it is, but if you get a spare power cord (it's the same cord used for pretty much all PCs and monitors) you could cut off (or pull out) the ground and see if it makes a difference. It's a cheap thing to try atleast, especially if you have a spare power cord already kicking around the house.

hi colin mine just packed in again and i fixed the ylod as usual but this time there was another problem! when i put it all back together and switched it on i had no power at all! the red light didnt even come on, ive already replaced the power pack before coz someone said that could of been the problem and im fed up of paying money fixing it so im saving up for a new ps3! make me an offer for my ps3 it will come as it is now-
1 ps3 60gb console complete with mem card readers

hi mate, my girlfriend so kindly surprised me and turned up at my house with a new ps3 so i no longer need to try to fix mine! and like you said i could probably get more than 50 off ebay but the person who buys it wont be helping the community like you would, and although id like to donate it i cant because ive paid out so much on fixing it, new PSU,BLURAY DRIVE, NEW CABLE RIBBONS etc! so if you like i'll sell it you for £45 and will still included what i said in the previous post, let me know asap colin because if you dont want it i'll sell on ebay but im giving you first refusal!
cheers mate

yes thats bcause for some reason the reflow isnt taking properly hence the video problems!
redo the reflow with flux @400 degrees celcius and 40 secounds per bga
but only reflow the cell and the rsx bga's from the top!!!
ie. heatsink side only!! TRY IT

Hello All.
I'm brand new here and I want to send out a big thanks to all of you and especially colinjest/gilsky. Two days ago my son's PS3 YLOD'd on us. It is an older 60GB model and I really wanted to hold on to it because of the backwards compatibility. Like others I contacted Sony to see what they could do and wasn't real keen on spending the $150 to get a model that wasn't compatible with the older games.
So anyway, you all saved me a big headache. I just switched it on after the reflow and it works perfectly.
I realize that it may only last a few hours but at least I know I can get it to work again.
Thanks again,
Splash1
The glass is neither half full nor half empty......it is simply twice as big as it needs to be....

bite the bullet and get a new ps3 or send it to a repair company capable of refitting it.if you could get ahold of another motherboard and a pair of calipers you could do a reball/refit but to be honest thats past alot of peoples skill level.you could try to buy a working motherboard for your system but it could run as much as $150,so id sell your broken unit on fleabay and save up for a new one. a price drop on ps3 will probly come with a couple months.but as far as refitting the gpu someone may be able to give you the required specs on the board ,but then youd need flux paste, solder balls and some luck that your system wont fry,if you part it out and sell the peices you could get anywhere from $150 to $250 depending on if you can sell it all. so in the end you are pretty screwed its gonna cost a bit of money to fix it now.with the seal broken and with the gpu not on the motherboard anymore i dont know if sony would touch it,but they may, the seal being broken isnt a big deal but that combined with the gpu may be a problem for them.
