The mess on the bottom of the black background is actually an error message being generated by AVISYNTH. If you open the .AVS file directly with Windows Media Player you'll be able to read it. It will tell you the line number of the error in the .AVS file.
Most of the time it tells you that MPEG2DEC3DG.DLL isn't installed properly...

jdobbs...what's the location of the .AVS file you're talking about?
Also, this is from rpor's INI file. Is it possible that the MPEG2Dec3dg.dll is corrupt?
MPEG2DEC=C:\Program Files\DVD Rebuilder\MPEG2Dec3dg.dll
vurbal...faster, yes, but your responses always seem to expalin things better. :)

rpor,
One simple way to find out your version information is use DVD-RB. I think this was put into DVD-RB in the 0.6X versions.
HELP --> DISPLAY VERSIONS.
You may copy this output and post it.

The AVS file is in the D2VAVS directory that is located in the working path. There will be a lot of them... but if you are getting an error it is almost always global, so you can open any one.

hey all, thanks for all the replies
I would never have thought to open the AVS files in a media player, but indeed this is what I see when I do:
Strangely enough, when I open the Version.AVS I created in a media player it says version 2.53, but DVD-RB's versions shows 2.52:
- Versions:
-- CCE SP Version: v2.67.0.27
-- MPEG2DEC3 Version: v1.0.1.0
-- AVISYNTH Version: v2.5.2.0
So I will first try to get a newer version (I hope there's no problem with MPEG2DEC3)
Will keep you guys posted, thanks!

Make sure you check the "Add to AVS" checkbox in the setup dialog. What seems to be happening is that you have two copies of MPEG2DEC, one in your AVISYNTH plug-in directory and another that you've pointed too in DVD-RB. When you don't click the checkbox, the version in the plug-in directory gets used as the default.

jdobbs, thanks this fixed it!
I checked the Add To AVS box next to the dll option, and its path was added to the avs.
Now when I open an AVS from the D2VAVS dir in mplayer it gets fed with the correct movie.
Thanks all, didn't think I'd solve this prob so fast
I'll leave DVD-RB to do its business for a few hours...;-)

Good one jdobbs, and the rest, lol. Of course in vurbal's guide it clearly states to check that box "add to avs".
rpor, another mystery solved, I've never even seen those red lines, much less knew they were actually an error message. ;>)

It seems as though every problem reported in tht last week was caused by an incorrect avisynth problem. I know that Vurbal included the correct avisynth version in his guide so that tells me that some folks aren't reading it or reading it closely.

Just wanted to say thanks again to all you DVD-RB gurus
I got excellent backup quality!
Just saw the version/checkbox setup in Vurbal's guide, it's all there of course...;-)
I had read before some other guide, and either it hadn't said so there, or I hadn't paid attention,
But hey! At least some of us learned what those red markings are...LOL

Schaff1945,
In CCE advanced options adjust quality_prec to 20 or higher to modify the encode toward smooth. This assumes you are using cce basic 2.69

One advantage I have in having done this for so long is that there is almost no error condition I haven't had to fix at one time or another.

Trial Versions have been the bane of RB/CCE problem solving. When we started this thread it was thought that we'd eventually archive all possible RB/CCE problems but now I'm not sure that's possible.

What about your VBR_bias setting, do you leave it at the default setting of 25? Also in the CCE SP trial what do you recommend for the quality_prec?
I was asked about this in another thread and I'm wondering what most use, any input would be appreciated.

In CCE Basic VBR Bias isn't a user accessible setting, and I'm guessing it uses a value of 30 since that's the default value for CCE SP. Even when I used SP exclusively I never messed with this setting, so I couldn't really give you advice for changing it. I also wouldn't say that quality_prec is a "smoothness" setting. What it does is adjust the priority between solid surfaces, like most walls for example, and motion. A higher value assigns more bitrate to surfaces, while a lower value assigns more to motion. I generally leave this setting at the default value, although I'll change it to 20 for animation since there tends to be more solid surface area than motion.

Hmmm... thanx for the info vurbal, I appreciate it. One thing tho, I'm still using CCE basic v.2.67(old habits die hard, the "if it ain't broke theory"...lol) and VBR_Bias is a user option that is definitely available. The default is set at 25. However I will heed your advice and leave it as is. Again, thanx! :>)

Are you talking about it being available in CCE or in DVD-RB? DVD-RB will show you all options, whether they can be set in your version of CCE or not. Just like you can set the number of passes in DVD-RB even though it's not something you can set in CCE Basic.

Im pretty sure I have stripped down my problem with either CCE or DVD-RB. My problem is, after the entire process of Preparing, Encoding and Rebuilding is done, and then I burn the files... some of the files get corrupted on the DVD during the burn process. If I use PowerDVD and load the files directly from my hdd as a "dvd", everything seems fine. When I burn tho, it plays 3 seconds and then PowerDVD tells me some of the disc is corrupt. When put in my standalone player, it skips the intro where PowerDVD choked at, but then it freezes in parts of the movie and whatnot. I came to the conclusion that DVD-RB/ CCE was the culprit because, if I restart the computer and burn the files after a restart... the dvd comes out perfect. This leads me to believe that some how... even after DVD-RB is 100% done.. the files are left being access somehow.
So my questions now are.... have anyone else had this problem? and how did you fix it. Does anyone know a way I could fix this (other than restart everytime after I finish rebuilding a DVD). I am using version 0.59 of DVD-RB with CCE SP 2.67.00.27 and EclCCE 1.81. I just noticed an update on DVD-RB, but the changes doesnt mention anything I have said. Any help is appreciated.

I've had a similar problem before, and it has always been the result of a HDD with fragmented files. If you find that a file plays correctly in at least one place, I'm nearly certain you can rule out RB-CCE as being the problem.

dude051,
You said the burn comes out fine after a reboot. No jerky video. At least this is how it read to me. The type of media you are using is working on that level.
You also said it plays back on PowerDVD. Well this means DVD-RB did it's job.
I would first defrag your hard drive to avoid problems with hard drive seek times. Second, question your burner software. There is something going on that impacts your DVD burns. A sharing problem with *.DLL's, a service that does not run all the time.
