Hi,

I bought TY for the first time and -- I think -- that I've a problem.
I'm buring with NEC 2500A and the lastest firmware, it works fine but when I test the media with Nero or KProbe I've bad results.
NEC is not supported by these tools so I use an old Liteon 411S. How can see if the problem comes from the player or from the media ?

I did the test twice with the same configuration. Once I've 43% and then 93%.

Yeah the 43 must've just been an error. I've gotten errors with DVDInfoPro where it had a huge PIF spike at the end of an otherwise perfect Yuden000T02. I scanned the same disc again, and it got a 99 on CD/DVD Speed. I stopped using DVDInfoPro because of that. Plus I like CD/DVD Speed's interface better. Scan it one more time, best two out of three wins. Most likely it's just a glitch. You may want to update to the current version of CD/DVD Speed, v.4.50.

actually, i haven't purchased the plextor 760 yet here in the U.S., perhaps i haven't looked hard enough since i've been gone, but i don't have that drive YET~ :) i think it is going to be the next drive on my list, but due to my time away, i have not had to time to be testing as much as i did before...

i just found it here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827249003

since i got the benq 1650 (i picked up 2 of them actually), i am still running my newest drive through some tests on various medias...so, that will keep me busy for a little while longer...i'm going to wait just a little while on that plextor, perhaps newegg will have a sale on it soon and i will buy it~ :)

but, it IS available now..the plextor PX-760a, but i've got more drives than i do computers now to run them all~ hehehe

@storm1234

thanks for the welcome back, yes, i'm getting around to testing my benq 1650 with all sorts of TY media, some Verbatims, some "off-brand" media that my friend supplies me too~ so far so good, much like my benq1640, i am getting equally good scores on everything so far...the usual 96+ quality scores on both DVD-R and DVD+R format~

@taiyouser

thanks for the kind words from ya too~ it's funny to see a member with such a fitting name..."taiyouser", i like it~ :)

@cinezone

i agree with tokijin's suggestion on this particular scan of yours...you should base your judgement on whether or not it's a good backup based on how well it plays on your standalones...all these scans here that people put up "for show" should be used as a guideline, not etched in stone...while MOST of them are representative of how well the backups were done on quality media, there will always be a few "bad apples" that show up and people start trippin' and getting worried about "why did i get this low score and so and so got this score...we use the same drive and same media..blah blah blah"

take these quality scans with the proverbial "grain of salt"...i think that most recent backup is probably a very decent backup, you gotta take into account that SOMETIMES your scanning drives will "hiccup" now and then depending on the scanning engine used...

@mort81

will do buddy...as you can see, i'm off my arse now and helping people again~ LOL hehehe

To Doc, I don't know you personally, I haven't the pleasure to even have a conversation with you, but no matter.
I quess I have been around now about 8 months, I don't write much, but I do read all the treads everyday and always learn something new because of people like you and others, and I do know your work because like I said I always read and have read many of your post's.
So out of respect may I wish you welcome back.

@fredbun

why thank you very much, it's very refreshing to hear from someone who 'knows my work' around here, that is a compliment that i take very humbly~ :)

i hope my contributions in the media forum can be beneficial for you and many others, i appreciate your kind words and thanks for taking the time to drop in my thread and express your views, you are welcome here anytime...

stick around buddy, even i learn something new each day (moreso in the other forums that i read here on AD), we all "specialize" in one field or another, and some members just know a bit about everything, but i am not one of those people...i stick with what i know and i learn from others that are far more knowledgeable than me in the other forums here, afterdawn is a great treasure-trove of info and knowledge, just be careful as to WHO you obtain knowledge from these days, as i see some people posting some very misinformed posts regarding certain topics they know absolutely NOTHING about... :)

thanks for the compliment, may your stay each day here prove worthy for you, the thrist for knowledge is very commendable~

Hello Doc,
its really great to see you back. so i guess its really hard to said if the new dw1650 is going to be as good as the dw1655 or the dw1640 or even the dw1620 right?? my question is that is that isit save to assume at least that i will be able to make at least 1500 or maybe 200 burn count with the dw1650 if i only use it for burning???

to storm1234
did you pick up your 1650 from the meritline.com?? because its probably one of the best deal around. i have burned about 100 tyg02 with them and its fantastic.

you really shouldn't worry about the QUALITY of the benq1650, i expect it to last for a VERY LONG TIME...i think your 1500 count is very reachable, and so far, the benq1650 is every bit as good as my 1640 (i don't have the 1620 nor the 1655, but i'm sure saugmon, mort81, and catfreak can attest to the quality of those particular drives you mentioned) :)

getting a TRUE Benq drive has it's rewards, the reason i'm such a big Benq fan now started when catfreak recommended them to me, i have been a firm believer in TRUE benq drives since then (the ones that have the philips chipset...ie. 1620, 1640, 1655, 1650...) they are affordable drives and serve their purpose very well with high quality backups, i have been pleased and look forward to much more consistent high quality burns with my 1650. no worries, you will be just fine...benqs like TY media...and MCC Verbatims too~ :)

After reading about bieng able to get these Verbatim's & Sony Media made by Ty's from stores like best buy and others has been kind of frustrating, over the past month's I do specifically looks for these no matter what store I go to, and everytime I pick one up, it always says made in Tiawan.
Than I ask about verbs & sony's to people that work at thee places and everytime they don't have a clue about my question especially best buy personell, so thank goodness I learned a while ago about sms.com from people here and have been buying real ty's ever since.

@arniebear

hi buddy, that Plextor u got is reported to be the "cadillac of dvd burners" by many people, while i have never owned one and have my eyes peeled on the NEW plextor i linked above...i believe in Plextor's quality claims, as i have a few friends that live by Plextor~ :)

well, if your birthday is coming up soon, that could be a good start in convincing the Mrs. on that new drive~ :) also, as cliche' as it might be, women LOVE flowers and chocolate (well, mine does at least)...that should be a good 'starting point' in getting a new Plextor toy to tinker around with...one very good point of relationships is to tell your wife how beautiful she is...as i'm sure it is true, it really makes their day :)

before i turn into Dr. Phil/ Dr. John Gray on this, i'll end this here...stop for a moment and really tell your wife how much you appreciate her, the fact that it's from the heart and it's true, you will reap the rewards of the compliment my friend...

docTy~

@fredbun

sometimes it's difficult to FIND the "made in japan" at the local stores, whether it be the sony brand or the fuji brand or even the maxell brand, that's the disappointing outcome that many on here WILL inevitably face when searching locally...a lot of the current stock around the country is "made in taiwan"...this arduous searching is actually made a little bit easier under the Verbatim brand, where "made in taiwan" is going to be prevalent on almost ALL the media you find in local stores, with the exception of the DL Verb media which is made in singapore...good luck with your journey, as disappointing as it might be to go to 3-4 different stores locally looking for certain media as reported here on AD in the weekly sales threads, if you keep at it, you will eventually find what you are looking for...sooner or later~ :)

fredbun,

Just to add to what kiv stated, verbatim made in taiwan is good stuff and an exception to the rule "only buy media made in japan". Ritek is another exception and usually sony's made in taiwan although not as good as verbatim's and ty's.

While I've got some you guys attention, I noticed this while checking out the MCC DVD+R's on supermediastore.com. Look at the price disparity between:

http://supermediastore.com/verbatim-8x-dvd-plus-r-94968-100.html

and

http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-plus...

Why is there a $20 price disparity between the MCC and Yudens? For $30 more than the MCC DVD+R's, you can get: http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-silver-thermal-8x-dvd-plus...

100 more discs. I have some interest in testing the capabilities of the MCC DVD+R's vs my TY DVD+R's, but with a $20 price difference per hundred spindle, fat chance. I was just curious if you guys knew why there is such a price difference.

Yeah good point. Sms has served me well, but that's a giant price discrepancy, I didn't even to think to look for another site. I love the Yuden000T02's, but I'm also interested in testing the Verb DVD+R's. What's the Media ID on 8x Verb DVD+R's? Wow, that's a great deal on the 500 pack of Verb 8x DVD+R's as well. Maybe I'll just get a 100 spindle of the Verb DVD+R's and the TY DVD+R's for variety on my next purchase.

All the 8x verbatim DVD+R media I have bought has coded out as MCC003's. Glad I stocked up on em when I got em for 23 cents a disk and free shipping. Guess I better not count my chickens yet since I haven't got the rebate yet. Knock on wood, I am yet to get stung on any mail in rebates and that includes verbatim. I still primarily use 8x verb DVD+R hub printables.

Well that's a difficult hypothetical question. No I don't think one burner would outlast three, no matter how good it is. Plextor and BenQ are two of the more reliable manufacturers around for DVD Burners. If I didn't own a BenQ, I'd probably go with a Plex or Litey. I think Plex would win out there. BenQ's are an amazing value for the price. It's a matter of personal preference, but based on what I've read, I would purchase from one of those three manufacturers.
