Ok, I appreciate the suggestions...

As Mort81 mentioned the SONY DRX-530UL does not support booktyping, but I did upgrade the firmware recently to its latest version and just to make sure I double checked it just now.

As far as ASPI layer, I'm not sure what that is so maybe you can shed some light on it for me...

The codes on the inside ring of the DVD's are as follows:

TY DVD-R = GG000077
TY DVD+R = TG001162

I bought both from supermediastore which everyone has said sell the real deal so it is unlikely that they are fake.

As far as speed, both -R & +R's were 8x which my burner is capable of burning and I believe I set the speed on Shrink to automatic so it should automatically detect the 8x configuration.

Basically I'm still in the dark, the only thing I can think of is that maybe something is wrong with my burner...but if thats the case then why does it burn the Memorex's with no errors or compatability issues besides a Coaster once and a while?

So here's a quick recap:

Memorex +R = Generally works fine, Coaster once and a while.
TY-R = No errors, but does not play on stand alone or my computer's dvd reader, only on the external burner is was created in.
TY+R = A lot of errors, plays on my stand alone but skips.
SONY+R (Identified as TY) = Same as above, lots of errors, plays on stand alone but skips.

Has anyone else ever encountered problems such as this?

@catfreak and mort81: While I understand why you feel there are more reasons than compatibility for choosing +R over -R, I stand by my earlier statement. A technically superior disc does not mean a more compatible disc. The "holy trinity" of media is quality, durability, and compatibility. Quality is determined by the media's construction and how well the burner and computer are set up to burn a given type of media, and while a drive might burn + media better than -, chances are good that for identical brands, the + and - quality differences will be minimal for equally rated speeds. Durability will also be the same, regardless of format, for identical brands at the same rated burnspeed. Compatibility is really the key, here, and from what I'm seeing, both in the forums and from personal experience, a -R disc will tend to play better in standalone players than a +R disc that is not booktyped to -ROM.

Thus, the comment I made about booktyping to -ROM stands: If you're not booktyping, then you're losing a great deal of the compatibility that this media is capable of, which makes all other technical superiorities completely moot. If a disc won't play in your player, why does it matter if it has one or one hundred superior technologies built into its construction? It's still just a Coaster, albiet a technically superior one. Don't misunderstand, however. I love the +R format, and I'm a devout user of it. I won't be going back to -R, ever. But if I couldn't booktype +R to -ROM? No, I'd still be using -R media, because without that, I know, from experience, they wouldn't play as well in my DVD players.

Perhaps I'm mistaken and I've misunderstood what I'm reading and seeing on my standalones and +R media IS more compatible than -R media even when it isn't booktyped to -ROM, and if so, then I do apologize for misleading you, Novakane.

@Novakane: Ok, I'll tell you straight up, TY +Rs on my player, great quality, what I would consider a perfect burn, NOT booktyped to -ROM, skips like crazy, too. So, you're not alone there. I have a Sanyo and a JVC player, and it skipped on both. Burned the same compilation again, booktyped it to -ROM, played PERFECTLY, same quality results. So, to me, the answer would be to upgrade your DVD burner, if you can afford it.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827101011

This link will take you to the hottest little number to be released recently, the Benq DW1650. You will NOT be disappointed with this drive. It's got all the features you need, including the much beloved booktyping of DVD+R media. For only $41, you might find all your problems solved. Although I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't booktype their +Rs and have great results, I would say the vast majority that buy +Rs do so with the express intent of booktyping. It DOES increase compatibility and gives you a very good chance of having your discs work in any player.

As for the ASPI layer, the Nero InfoTool (ASPI tab) will tell you if it is installed and working properly. If it isn't, you need to get that fixed. I recommend wnaspi32.dll, version 2.0.1.74, which is Nero's ASPI layer (you can Google it, it's all over the Internet). You'll typically find installation instructions with the download.

Good luck!

delateur,

I'm not totally disagreeing with you. I was only saying that on newer stand-alone players both formats are about equil as far as compatability. Yes -r's are more compatable with older stand-alones and that booktyping DVD+R media to dvd-rom greatly increases their compatability on them.

I agree about booktyping +r media to dvd-rom too. Look in my sig. I only use +r media and booktype to dvd-rom always. I also agree that it may be time for Novakane to upgrade to a new/better dvdrw drive and that the benq DW1650 would be an excellent choice but there has got to be a solution to his/her problem other than replacing the drive.

Novakane,

What burn utility are you using and if Nero what vs and is it current?

@mort81: I'm glad that I was able to clarify a bit. My initial post could indeed be misunderstood. While I agree that there might be some other troubleshooting we could do for Novakane, I think because he's using +Rs currently, it might be time to upgrade to a drive that can do the absolute most with the format, namely booktyping. I see by your sig that you're a Verbatim +R fan, and I too have used that media. I'm sure we can both agree that a booktyped Verbatim is a beautiful thing to behold! The same is true of those TYs he's got, and I, for one, would consider it a horrible oversight if I didn't at least let him know just how much he'll enjoy booktyping, once he's tried it. :) While I can't guarantee that his movies will play skip-free if they're booktyped to DVD-ROM, I'd be very surprised if they didn't.

delateur,

it's all good. It's foolish to buy a dvdrw drive that is not capable of bitsetting. Doesn't cost any more and lets you achieve the greatest compatability possible. I wouldn't own a drive that wasn't capable of bitsetting.

hehe, now now boys, this is one of the happiest/most productive/useful informational threads on AfterDawn (in my humble opinion), i like how we all get along so nicely in here... :)

as to the whole "booktype this, booktype that" conversation we are having here, most KNOW that due to mort81's urging, i have been firmly planted in the DVD+R camp for a long time now...LOL...so, for me to argue or dismiss any points brought up here would be absurd...

i agree with you completely delateur in your point of reason in regards to quality, durability, and finally compatibility...while the technical aspects of DVD+R format over that of DVD-R is far superior, given novakane's issues right now, i would really have to side with you in suggesting he use DVD-R format (if he doesn't have the necessary funds for a new drive at this point in time) :)

also, as often as "firmware update" is mentioned as a possible solution to one's burning woes, i will have to intraject and say that for such an older model drive, the Sony drx-530UL firmware is quite outdated...as seen here:

http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#530

the most "current" firmware for this older Sony drive is dated wayyyyyyy back to friggin 12/21/04, which is a good almost year and a half old! :P

i honestly feel that in novakane's case right here, unless Sony miraculously updates this firmware for his drive in the very near future, he will continue to be having some issues with the newer 8x rated media (don't matter whether it be DVD-R or dvd+r) as of late as well as the newer 16x rated media that is becoming more and more widespread these days on the market~ :)

i will personally and strongly suggest a newer, more frequently updated firmware-burner novakane, if your budget allows you to do so at this time, and the benq1650 that delateur suggested is an EXCELLENT drive for the price, i have 2 by the way~ :) it will do everything you want it to do and the booktyping, or lack thereof in your present case, will be a thing of the past~ :)

anyways, i'm glad that we are progressing on this issue, everyone has made valid points and should be considered...

man, i guess i do come in here and contribute less often now, it's really sporadic when my ramblings will begin and end...oh well, at least we staying on topic...cuz he IS using TYs LOL~ :)

p.s. mort81 & tokijin, supermediastore did not honor those Verb 8x DVD+R 50-packs that i placed an order for a few days ago...they cancelled the order i had placed, today with a "no longer in stock...we're sorry for the inconvenience" to my email address... :(

piss me off...oh well, i'm glad i DO still have a few MCC003s left from before, i gotta say when you booktype these bad boys, they ARE a sight to behold as delateur mentioned earlier...

docTY~

good evening all, i gotta get back to tweaking my computer, never-ending issues...that's the thing with computers, you gotta hate them sometimes, but then you can't live without em' (well, i can't at least)...and it's virtually IMPOSSIBLE to "keep up with the advancing technology" too, regardless of how deep your pockets may be...there will ALWAYS be something faster/better only months after you purchase something today thinking you were "cool" and "up to date" LOL

On the issue of the need for an aspi, if you are using a USB/Firewire you do not need an aspi as the program does not work with these drives. In fact you may cause more problems if using one.

http://www.blindwrite.com/faq.htm

One reason I do not use aspi is because of the fact that I run USB drives, and when I did have aspi installed the drives would not work correctly and had problems with some programs. If you are using XP then the system SPTI works well.

docTY, correct me if I'm wrong, but currently, there are really only two practical ways to get TYs rebranded via the brick and mortar retail channel in North America:

1. Sony (MIJ and Octagonal Spacers or MIJ and 8x +R)
2. Fuji (MIJ and Color Towers)

These used to rebrand TY, but that is nearly obsolete:

1. TDK (the -R TY used to come in distinctive TY cakeboxes at places like CompUSA)
2. Fuji (the regular Fuji disks are almost all MIT now)

These brands are the only decent non-TY media:

1. Maxell (MIJ, made by Hitachi/Maxell)
2. Sony (MIJ, made by Sony/Daxon)
3. Verbatim (MIT or MIS, made under supervision of Mitsubishi Chemicals)

Now, tell me the truth, isn't it really that simple? Tell me I'm wrong.

Why do people make this so complicated? Why do they rack their brains trying to remember an innumerable and ridiculous amount of extraneous information, when a few simple quality rules pretty much eliminate 90% of the media on the shelves from consideration? Why?

Let us not forget the RitekR03, R04, G05, F1 and RicohJpnR02 and R03
.. these are pretty decent discs themselves .. and a number of ADers swear by 'em

You'll find them making discs for these branded discs:
RiData, Office Depot, 8x MIT Maxell, 8x MIT Fuji, Ricoh, Ritek

I haven't been coming to this site for that long but I gotta say that I am impressed. Not only do I get TONS of useful information, but it gets posted almost instantaneously....lol. I post a question, go downstairs to get something to drink and by the time I get back there are already at least 2 or 3 responses. So a big thanks to you guys and I'm glad sites like this exist where information is offered so freely.

Ok, you guys pretty much confirmed what I had in mind, GET A NEW BURNER!!! And it seems that the Benq DW1650 is unanimously the recommended model (which I will go online and purchase as soon as I post this thread). I didn't realize that the burner/firmware I was working with was so outdated (thanks for pointing that out Doc)...I guess that could pretty much explain all the troubles I was having, the burner/firmware wasn't up to date with the rest of the technology (kind of like using new software on an oooold computer).

Mort81, I do use Nero (via Shrink), Version 6.3.1.16, I never thought about that as part of the equation since Shrink hides it, its easy to forget that Nero is the actual burning utility. I can't even remember the last time I updated it so it is most likely not the most recent version. I'll have get that upgrade.

Well, I'm off to snatch up a Benq DW1650, I'll keep you guys posted, I still have a good amount of TY-R's & +R's so I will be given the Benq some thorough QC tests....

@negritude

you are pretty concise about your "short-list" right there buddy, namely when looking for taiyo yuden produced media in local retail chains here in the U.S. under the various brands and formats/rated speeds you mentioned earlier~ :)

thanks for taking the time to make it "short and sweet" for the good people here on AD~

as to which non-TY media I personally would use, i'm fairly biased in terms of "personal preference" to only the Hitachi produced MIJ Maxells and the MIT Verbatims (single layer- MCC coded) or the MIS (dual layers)...as to the Sony MIT (sony coded) i don't personally find them as "good" as some others make them out to be, albeit i haven't used that many, for ME and me only, i don't take them into consideration when i go shopping for media locally...that's just MY opinion of them...

catfreak has also brought up a valid point as i USED to swear by Ritek for all my backups a few years ago, at one point, i used to use NOTHING but the Ridata Ritek G05s (non-printable 8x dvd-R) and i had nothing but success with them...been years since i have purchased any more and with all the "issues" flying around about the decline in quality control as well as rapid deterioration, i personally no longer purchase them locally nor online~ i still feel they are good "budget media" and are useful to some people and their backup needs.

there are quite a few "long-time" members that trust made in taiwan ritek and ricohjpn, it has worked very well for them in the past and they continue to use them today...to each their own.

as to the "complications" that many members on AD have in terms of buying locally, you have to remember that there are many kids that are here looking for "the best media" and have a lot of questions and inquiries...the "avg. joe" learns a lot in deciphering the "media quality code" and it takes time for some people to realize which media is "good" and works well on their particular setups~ :) not everyone has the logical base and reasoning skills that you obviously possess, i try to cater to the "unknowing/inquisitive" types too~ :)

@taiyouser

as to my extreme edition intel sig, we all have our own opinions about certain chips...my extreme edition happens to be the 3.4ghz NORTHWOOD core and from what i've read and talked about with some VERY knowledgeable members (they addicts actually) if overclocked correctly, could easily blow away any AMD single core and the newer prescott intels alike... :) while yes, it IS the older technology being the socket 478 chipset, if done properly with correct OC'in procedures and sufficient cooling, the northwood intel cores have a LOT of potential in terms of keeping up with the newer tech. of today.

i went with amd x2 4400+ dual core since i wanted to be a lil more "up to date" with my systems at this point, i have been building systems for years, but i am still learning about the whole "overclocking" thing, in that field i am still very much a newbie...but it should go without saying that if you know what you are doing and use high quality components, my northwood intel could still smoke a large percentage of the prescott chips and amd chips today~ :) i used to list my system specs in my sig, but have focused more about 'media' lately, i have a few systems setup now that would make your jaw DROP in terms of the parts i have in them...

we all have different "hobbies" and strengths, as i stated before i am still learning in the overclocking game, but once i get the hang of it, i'm sure the speed increase attained should be more than sufficient for years to come...

good day all

docTY~

I like Taiyo Yuden media. Its all I use.

2 questions:

1.Im buying a DL burner soon so, does taiyo yuden make (or plan to make) Dual Layer Discs?
2. Do they make (or plan to make) Lightscribe DVDR discs?

to answer both your questions, 1. no, no IMMEDIATE plans to manufacture dual layer media at this point, but it's POSSIBLE in the future, but not likely from what i've been told...
2. nope, for lightscribe, i would recommend the Verbatim ones...those are probably the best quality lightscribe discs at this point in time...TY has no plans again to start making lightscribe discs either...

while either format IS possible, nothing has been set in motion by Taiyo Yuden to manufacture either of them right now...so sorry~

What's up guys. That sucks about the Verb's Doc. I rushed over to buy 100, but like everybody else, the checkout link was gone. Seems like it was too good to be true. They do have 8x DVD-R's for like $14, after a mail in rebate. http://www.supermediastore.com/verbatim-8x-dvd-r-media-94852-ther...

I guess it just depends on how you feel about mail in rebates. :) I'm going to try Cyprusrom's suggestion of buying the Sony TY DVD+R's at Sam's Club w/o a memebership. .33 cents a disc for TY DVD+R's, I haven't seen a better deal anywhere. I doubted DVD+R's at first, but after running 70+ scans on them vs. DVD-R's, they seem to be clearly superior. I am definitely a DVD+R guy now. Is there a significant difference in dye quality between DVD+R's and DVD-R's? It seems that the DVD+R's don't get scratched as easily from use as the DVD-R's. It could be my imagination. Anyway, on a personal note, I'm a moderator at http://www.Xtreme-Source.com now. I've been busy putting together guides and tutorials like these: http://xtreme-source.com/showthread.php?p=4340#post4340

Thanks for the quick reply and info.

On a side note, does verbatim make the DL lightscribe discs and can you post a link to the best price for them? I would assume supermediastore.com, but the price seems a little high for verbs plus most of the write speeds arent 8x, which is what my new burner will do [for DVD+R DL, only 4x for DVD-R dl].

@docTY: I agree with your opinion that Sony MITs aren't really "recommendable" quality. They are far from junk, but they don't produce nearly as pretty a scan as a TY or Verbatim disc. I probably won't buy any more of them, but I don't feel like they cross the threshhold into "questionable" media. Still, there are better medias out there that I would recommend over these MIT Sonys without hesitation. I have no problems producing 95% quality scans that will play in any player with these MIT Sonys, but I have no knowledge of how they rate in terms of durability compared to the top of the line media out there.

i agree with ya, the Sony MIT are by no means "poor" or "questionable" quality, nobody is claiming they are as good as TYs or Verbs, so no argument ensues...lol, everyone has their own preferences on media, i have read somewhere in here some guy that likes the Sony MIT better than the TYs on HIS setup, to each their own again...i can safely say that if people want recommendations on media and their systems are even remotely close to how mine is setup, TY and Verbs will win hands down (sufficient memory, same burning programs, same burner w/ identical firmware, same burn speed on said media, etc...many factors contribute to how successful one is when making a backup) :)

everyone has a right to THEIR own opinion on media, whether it works universally for everyone else, now that's a completely diff. story all together~ :) have a good one

docTY~

@herrick

the "MIT" stands for "made in taiwan"...on the Sony spindles, you can find the country of origin on the papper wrapper...the country, either Made in Japan (MIJ) or "Made in Taiwan" (MIT) is right between the "PAQUET DE 50 PACK" written in yellow color on mine and the "Limited Lifetime Warranty" paragragh right by the bar code~ :)

it's a 1-liner that either says "made in taiwan" or "made in japan" :)

hope that helps...it's small, so look carefully~
