thanks for the welcome back lethal, little155, and garmoon~ :) mucho appreciated~ :)
if you guys see questions about Taiyo Yuden in the other forums here on AD, point them over to this thread...i am unfamiliar with a lot of the gaming console forums as well as the various other forums here, AD is such a big place so there are many forums i don't even wander into as i know nothing about the topics~ :)
keep up the good work guys, i noticed some changes have been implemented by dRD recently, so, this should make AD a better place with less whining and bitching...cheers guys~

I just picked up some TYG03 from the Best Buy sale. I'm wondering what speed to burn my movies at using a NEC 3540 burner.

@vicco
while i do not have that particular model nec drive, i have the older one..the 3520a...i burn my TYs @8x using my nec...the key to finding your "sweet spot" for burning speed is to experiment a little bit...see which speed suits YOU best..but for starters, i would begin by burning the 16x rated TYG03s @8x...and go from there...

This might be a little off topic, but can someone take a picture of one of those "Aluminum-Like Hard Plastic CD DVD Storage Case" inside the case with the lid open,either size anywhere from 210+ - 600. I just wanna see how they are, with discs in them and more full, then there pictures on SMS. If you dont know what im talking about exactly here's a link http://supermediastore.com/cd-dvd-storage-case-aluminum-metal-lik...
I would really like to see one opened up with discs in it, thinking about getting one next time it has a good sale. Much appreciated Thanks Storm~

i'm almost 100% sure that vicco got the TYG03s under the Sony brand 16x DVD-R spindles that are MADE IN JAPAN...most likely with the octagonal white spacer on top too~ :)
if you walk into bestbuy, the sales rep. there will have NO CLUE as to what "TYs" are...you have to find them under either the Sony or the Fuji brand..."made in japan" (8x rated discs...with recently the Sony 16x DVD-R being TYs)

@Tokijin
Quote: Just checked my local Sam's Club. They have Yuden000T02 on sale for $25 for 75 discs, a 50 and and a 25 spindle packaged together. I don't have a membership there as yet, but I will buy all future Yuden000T02's there. That's a great deal. That beats SMS.coms 200 Yuden000T02's for $87 and free shipping. I could get 225 discs for $80 or so.
I bought one of those packs of 75 Sony at Sam's Club in my area. I don't have a membership either, but I had no problem just walking in and paying cash.

I've been buying my Sony MIJ from Sam's Club since January. They did ask me if I had memebership everytime, and since I didn't, only let me buy one pack at a time. Big deal, so I went again two days later to get another one...:~)!
I really didn't know if the price was the best, but the best I could find, since I don't buy online.

Probably to get a really good price online you have to get free shipping? Which probably have to buy paks of 100 or 200?
I don't burn that much, maybe 40-50 a month, an so far, I have probably enough for a good year. It was a K-Mart in my area that went out of business...I got four(the last ones) 25pks of Sony MIJ for a little less than $5 each! At a local store, I bought a load of 50pks of Maxell, MIJ and a couple MIT(Ritek). Also for about $5 each. Maybe when my supply gets low, I'll look online for a good deal!

Not DVD+R's. They do have some real good deals on DVD-R's. I probably burn a similar amount to Cypress ROM, 40-50 a month. Primarily I backup PS2 games, since most movies nowadays are God awful in my opinion. I think the best deal they have on DVD+R's are 200 for $87, which isn't as good a deal as the TY's at Sam's club. $25 for 75 = .33 cents a disc. 200 for $87=44 cents a disc for Yuden000T02.

@Jurgennop: At ~.27 cents apiece, that's a good price for MCC media. Of course, I would never recommend -R over +R if you're booktyping, but then again, I've never had any issues with the -R's I've burned, either. I generally feel that if you're getting +R media for under .35/disc, after tax, shipping, etc., you're getting a reasonable price. If you're a bargain hunter, you can get them for about .10 less, usually through some sort of rebate/clearance sale. In looking at their site, however, they're selling quite a bit of low quality (Imation, off-brand) media that is probably not that great. That makes me suspicious of any "non-branded" high quality media they claim to be selling. If it were me, I'd probably pass on that and get something I know is true MCC media (Verbatim).

Hi, i m currently using a benq dw1650, and i read that it favors dvd+ formats, im kinda new to this but here in canada it's hard to find TY dvd+r's, the only ones i can locate is TY dvd-r's 8x and 16x, which one would you recommend?
Im interested in the best quality burns - speed and compatibility isn't that big of an issue as i will be playing these on my computer.
thanks ~

Ok, now I'm totally confused....let me start from the beginning and try to make it as compact as possible....
When I started backing up my movies (using DVD Fab Decryptor & Shrink) I would usually use Memorex +R's. I had some coasters here and there but generally they would play fine. Once, I had bought some SONY +R's as well.
At one point in time I became interested in researching more about DVD burning, which lead me to stumble across this website among others. I found out that Memorex's weren't too hot, found out about TY's and bought some -R's from SMS.com, downloaded Nero Speed and DVD Identifier and began checking my previously backed up discs.
Using Nero Speed (Scan Disc Option) I found that about 20% of the Memorex discs had errors, while the SONY's (which DVD Identifier identified as TY's) almost all had errors which I found strange since I had read so much praise about TY's. I confirmed the errors by playing them on my DVD player.
I wasn't too worried about it since I had received the official non-branded TY's which I had faith in. So I began the process of backing up my movies again. However, I found that these TY-R's only played back on the burner which I used to burn them (SONY DRX-530UL), they did not play back on my computers stock DVD drive or my stand alone DVD player.
I wrote to this thread with my TY situation and the response I got back was that it might be my stand alone DVD player or that I might want to try using +R's, since it was the first time I had used -R's and it might be a compatability issue. I didn't think that the problem was my stand alone since both it and my computers dvd reader both read the Memorex's and the SONY TY's fine, so I was pretty sure that purchasing TY+R's would do the trick, and I ordered some (again from SMS.com).
The problem that I am getting now with my TY+R's is that all of the ones that I have burned so far (which is about 7) all have tons of errors when read by Nero Speed (Scan Disc). I have not been able to get one clean burn as of yet. I've researched enough to come to the conclusion that it is unlikely that the problem are the TY's, it must be something in my setup that I'm doing wrong. I've tried backing up the same movies with some Memorex's that I still have left over and I find no errors on those....
Please help!!! Am I putting too much trust in Nero Speed? As I am typing I have a TY+R backup playing on my TV and it is skipping...

@Novakane: Well, let me clarify one thing since I didn't see you mention it anywhere in your post: You ARE booktyping (bitsetting) your DVD+R media to DVD-ROM, aren't you? This is the ONLY reason to use DVD+R over DVD-R. Most would agree that DVD-R is far more compatible with standalone players than DVD+R unless you are booktyping, in which case, DVD+R is the best, but only by a small margin, while the compatibility of DVD-R versus +R (non booktyped) is a rather wide margin (in other words, plain DVD+R will give you far more compatibility headaches than DVD-R). If you ARE booktyping to DVD-ROM, then the only other things I can think of are:
1) Your firmware isn't up to date
2) Your ASPI layer is perhaps out of date (I use the Nero WNASPI32.DLL, myself, and I believe most others would either say they use the same, or would not think using it would cause any problems. I am currently using 2.0.1.74.).
I am hesitant to think that your standalone can't play DVD-ROM booktyped discs, but if you aren't booktyping, or your burner isn't handling the media properly (and thus is producing errors it shouldn't be), that could definitely cause skipping.

First of all the sony DRX-530 is not capable of bitsetting/booktyping. The first sony's capable of bitsetting was the DRU-700.
I would make sure your firmware is current and also that your discs are genuine TY's and not fakes. Look around the whole in the center and give us the letters and numbers you see there. Doc Knows TY media better than I but look for a number that starts with a G like GGxxxxxx. What speed are your dvd's rated at and what speed are you burning them at?
No disrespect to anyone but the -r format is more compatable with older stand-alone dvd players and booktyping +r media to dvd-rom will greatly improve +r's compatability with them but both formats are about equil with newer players and if anything the +r's might be a little more compatable. If your drive is capable of bitsetting, booktype your +r media dvd-rom. It sure won't hurt.
