@docTY: I've really enjoyed learning about different types of media, and it's always worthwhile to me to know what sort of "non-junk" there is out there, if only because I might pick some up if the price is right. All things being equal in terms of price, I'll always choose Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden over anything else, but it's nice to know that when an amazing sale comes along, you aren't buying a stack of coasters. ;) This is why I mention that I'm not displeased with Sony MITs, because they do produce a nice burn, just not the BEST burn I've ever done. As you said, that honor still belongs to the reigning champions: Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim. :)

It does help. I'm able to almost instantly recite a media code based on Brand and where it was manufactured. I can also identify almost any common Media ID, thanks to the Doc. It's a useful skill to have. You never when it'll come in handy.

Unfortunately I'm experiencing TY blues. I bought an Emprex DVDRW USB16x at the weekend and three four-packs of 8x orange-top DVD+R's. They turn out to be YUDEN000 T02. Being a long time TY CDR user I was pleased I had lucked into these. So far one good burn, four total coasters, two partial coasters. I'm burning in Nero 6 (Express) with all programmes, av, firewall etc turned off. I checked fimware and media compatibility before starting. I'vd tried 4x and 8x. I've tried booktyping to DVD-ROM and auto booktyping. I'm getting writer errors, write errors, bad sector read errors/cyclical reduncancy checks. Complete and utter pain and time consuming exercise.

"@docTY: I agree with your opinion that Sony MITs aren't really "recommendable" quality."

Note that I wasn't talking about Sony MITs. See there, even docTY made a mistake and forgot that there is Sony MIJ media which is Sony made and not TY. People get confused because Sony uses the same media codes for both, but they are different quality media.

One more time, so that we squash this once and for all:

There is Sony MIJ media which is NOT made by Taiyo Yuden.
There is Sony MIJ media which is NOT made by Taiyo Yuden.
There is Sony MIJ media which is NOT made by Taiyo Yuden.
There is Sony MIJ media which is NOT made by Taiyo Yuden.
There is Sony MIJ media which is NOT made by Taiyo Yuden.

The Sony MIJ media which is NOT Taiyo Yuden, is BETTER than the Sony MIT media with the same media code.
The Sony MIJ media which is NOT Taiyo Yuden, is BETTER than the Sony MIT media with the same media code.
The Sony MIJ media which is NOT Taiyo Yuden, is BETTER than the Sony MIT media with the same media code.
The Sony MIJ media which is NOT Taiyo Yuden, is BETTER than the Sony MIT media with the same media code.
The Sony MIJ media which is NOT Taiyo Yuden, is BETTER than the Sony MIT media with the same media code.

Sony uses the same media code for it's MIJ and MIT non-TY media, but there is a quality difference. I consider non-TY Sony MIJ to be as good as Maxell MIJ, at least in the DVD-R format. Please stop lumping the Sony MIT in with the non-TY Sony MIJ! Thank you.

You can make your point without being obnoxious. Show me some proof there are MIJ Sony 8x DVD+R's that are not Taiyo Yudens. What you're saying is true for the DVD-R format. There are MIJ Sony 8x DVD-R's that have the Sony media code. If you're happy using MIJ Sony Media that's not TY, then great. Keep on using it. Everybody else in this thread will keep on using high quality TY and Verb in both formats. Cheers!

how did i make a mistake? was i referring to YOUR post? i was speaking to delateur as to opinions about MIT Sony that he commented about earlier...

i made absolutely NO mention to you or about you in regards to MIJ Sonys, i was talking to delateur about his comment...

anyways, petty differences and misinterpreted verbage aside, you actually THINK for a moment that i would forget that there is Sony MIJ media which is Sony made and not TY? c'mon now, who do you think made it quite clear to everyone here that MIJ Sony does NOT = taiyo yuden made?

in THIS particular thread where i started by saying ALL questions regarding Taiyo Yuden media are welcome, naturally people will have questions concerning OTHER media as well...i'm curious as to WHY you have such fervor for SONY MIJ that are non-TYs? i sincerely hope you are not a "fanboy" of Sony, as in the past there was a member (whose name started with a "p") that was banned due to his incessant bitchin' about Sony this, Sony that...our friendly Moderator creaky knows it all too well...

everyone here is entitled to their OWN opinions about whichever media, for you to "prefer" the MIJ Sony non-TYs over the MIT Sony (with the same Sony coding) is simply YOUR preference, yes there are differences in quality as you pointed out, but for OTHERS interested in Sony media (whether TY or not or MIT or MIJ)..."lumping" the Sony MIT in with the Sony MIJ non-TYs is very much a viable way to look at things from a broader perspective.

i respect your opinions as well as the opinions of everyone else that wants to contribute to my thread, but to call me out by assuming i "forgot" about what i preach and that i made a "mistake"...c'mon, you really take me for a fool?

Hey,

i recently crossflashed my benq 1620 to B7W9 fw
and now it won't burn my sony 08D1 dvd-r's at 2,4x anymore. It will burn my TYG02 at 2,4x though...
I've had the best burns when burning it at that speed, and since i used this new fw it will only burn from 4x upwards...

I always get the same IO error, with check condition stuff...

anyone know what's wrong?

I agree that Taiyo Yuden's are definatly the best. They even have this Value Line DVD-R that they make that works just as good as the regular stuff and it played in a DVD player that was made 5 years ago! They keep advertising them at http://www.mediamegamall.com . I have seen them at some other places like Supermedia and Rima as well, I guess these are just a grade B product or something but they work great.

Thanks for the reply.

Last question:

I've been burning DVD-R for about 2 years, great compatability in my 2 players, my dad's, friends, etc.

Ive never used DVD+R discs, and i read numerous articles stating that the "+r" format has a lower dvd player compatablity % compared to the "-r" format, (96% vs. 87% i believe), and what worries me is that the burner i picked out burns +r dl discs twice as fast as -r dl discs, and if the +r has problems with my dvd players then im stuck burning dual layer discs at 4x. yuck.

So, after all the babble, is there truth to this?

I'm not the expert here, but I believe if you booktype the +R discs, it changes the 87% to about 98%.

I usually get mixed results on Disc Quality tests.
So I use the Benchmark or Scan disc feature instead :)
My discs have been all prefect for the most part (using Sony TYD).

Just tested Sony MIJ, with 8x burn speed. Always burn at 4x, but after many here have said 8x is good, I decided to try 8x. I seem to get a little better results. You guys can be the judge though. The last TY one is burned at 4x. Last picture is verbatim, burned at 8x.

Not all of them are like the - format. Be sure ''Made in Japan'' is on the label.

Yes and the newer ones that're TY's have the octogonal spacer on top. I finally was able to verify this, at least with 8x Sony MIJ DVD+R's. My Staples blows, they only have MIT Sony's in both formats. They have a couple 25 spindles of Yuden000T02 for $20. A $1 a disc, how can I pass that up?
