Quote: & if you get media rated @ 16X max., it's okay to burn @ 8X speed ?
yes, most definitely it is OK to burn 16x TYs @8x, that's what i do myself actually :)
thanks Mort buddy for covering some of the other questions while i was away, been a hectic day today w/ a patient that barely pulled thru, stresses me out when a patients lifeline suddenly goes south and the friggin anesthesiologist hasn't a CLUE as to what he's doing and starts to panic~ i'm not blaming him, but, c'mon, surgery is a TEAM effort, every specialized physician is supposed to excel in their own particular field, we don't have room for errors, let alone little pansies that FREAK OUT when something goes unexpectedly wrong...
anyways, that's my little rant on a rather hectic day...now, back to media~ :)
@gurnard
you will always be considered a trusted FRIEND in my book, don't let anyone's comments get to you regarding the media that you use...i for one will personally back you up ANYTIME if need be, just PM me and i'll do what i can...btw, i should try your "pancake" idea, just to test my burning prowess~ LOL :)
@bunnyrip
thanks for always giving me such kind and sincere support, keep up the good work yourself and burn on buddy~
@mort81
what can i say about you? i dunno, i give you credit for getting me into the whole "booktyping" thing from the very beginning...without YOUR KNOWLEDGE of firmwares, booktyping and media i would not be where i am now...thank you.~ :)
i always value and respect your opinions here on AfterDawn, your ability to gently guide others in the right direction is very admirable...wish i could be like you...i don't wanna be like Mike, i wanna be like Mort81~!
@arniebear
once again, your knowledge and experience about seemingly EVERY aspect of dvd burning amazes me...i trust your opinions and would encourage others to do so too~ i've learned a great deal from you, so i would like to thank you for helping me and clarifing things for me from "way back in the dayz" :)
@tokijin
welcome to our little close knit media club here~ following the advice of the experienced members (mort81 and arniebear) you will not go wrong...i can honestly say they have even more experience than i do in this dvd burning game and i learned from some of the very best to become "known" here now~ :)
Quote: Lol. You were down to 225 discs huh?
not that i burn nearly as much as i used to, i would have a panic attack if my blank media supply was ever down to 225 LOL, we all have our "excessive" nature in life, mine happens to be media~ :)
Quote: Hey Doc someone brought to my attention they bought some TDK DVD+R's that had the YudenXXX Media ID
well, since the beginning of 2005, some VERY fortunate people have in fact received the YUDEN000T02s under the SILVER TDK 8x DVD+R spindles, naturally, made in japan...this was brought to my attention MONTHS ago, however, if you know my "feelings" towards TDK, that would explain why i never recommended them to anyone on here~ :) LOL it was not so much that i was "keeping this dirty lil secret" to myself, but moreso, not to mislead people into running out and stocking up on the MIJ TDKs 8x DVD+R with the false sense of knowledge ASSUMING they were going to get the YUDEN000T02s every time (the consistency of getting TY under TDK's branded 8x DVD+R is FAR FROM the % in your favor you would get YUDEN000T02s under the MIJ Fuji or Sony labels) i didn't feel it was "right" to misinform the masses about TDK because quite honestly, you would be VERY lucky to get those TYs under the TDK brand, more than likely, even on MIJ spindles you would get TDK002, which i HAVE tried and do not like very much...
i have also gotten the TYG02s made by Taiyo Yuden, MIJ spindle of TDK's 8x DVD-R too, this was a spindle given to me by a trusted dvd media collegue that i compare "notes" with on a weekly basis...he was checking with me to the authenticity of the TYs under the TDK brand and after i inspected them PERSONALLLY, they were in fact, genuine TYs~ :)
so, as much as i bash TDK's on here, just remember..there is a REASON to my madness...it's basically a game of LUCK...the friend that gave me that spindle of TYG02s under the TDK brand thought to himself, "hey, if these MIJ TDk's are Taiyo Yuden produced, i should buy them up by the cartloads next time BestBuy/Circuit City have their TDK sale again"...which he DID, BUT, here's the kicker...out of the 10 (ten) 50-pack spindles of TDK 8x DVD-R MIJ on the wrapper, only 2 were the Taiyo Yuden made ones...the remaining 8 spindles were the TTG02 coded ones, which is insanely ironic as the TTG02 (which is TDk's own manufactured media, is MADE IN TAIWAN!!) he got the TTG02s under the "MIJ" on the spindle, now HOW MISLEADING IS THAT??? there wasn't a "MIJ sticker" over where the MIT label should have been, these were PRINTED "Made in Japan" right there on the TDK spindle paper insert (u know, the paper that goes around the discs inside the cakebox) :)
so, with that said, THAT is why i never recommend TDK's IF you are trying to find the Taiyo Yuden produced discs under a different "brand" name...my friend knows just as much about media as i do, he just comes directly to me regarding anything Taiyo Yuden related...but he's used media that even i have never tried before and that's why we compare "notes" when an obscure brand comes into the picture~ :P
he doesn't despise TDk as much as i do, because after his "bad" experience with getting the TTG02 (which are made in taiwan) under the MIJ labelled spindles, he's burned quite a few successful backups that DO score pretty high on nero's cd-dvd speed quality tests, he uses different burners than i do, which is why i believe he's had much more success with TDK's own media than i have...
while he admits they are not as good as Taiyo Yuden's media, he's "ok with them" because he doesn't want to admit that he was SCAMMED on those MIJ spindles he bought so many of...LOL
but anyways, that's the "inside scoop" on TDK from me, you would not have found me reveal this in ANY other thread other than my own~ :)
@johnman
the inherent problem with a "list" of dvd brands that use Taiyo Yuden as their manufacturer would be that it could CHANGE at a moment's notice...the manufacturers for dvd "brands" could change without anyone's knowledge overnight, and we as the consumer would be fooled...and people like me that try to "keep on top" of various brands that use TY made discs, would be reprimanded and condemned for giving out "false info"... :)
mort81 linked you to a fairly "accurate" list of possibilities, but it's ONLY a guide of what USED to be and what MIGHT be nowadays...it is in no way COMPLETELY accurate, as some "brands" have changed manufacturers since the time that "list" was made~ :) but, it's definitely a good start~!
your best bet to find Taiyo Yuden manufactured discs locally under various brands would be to use that list as a guideline and check frequently HERE at afterdawn in this dvd media forum where people add their experiences/purchases (what they bought and what they actually RECEIVED when ran thru a dvd identifier program) in here often~ as mort81 stated, at this present time, the "safer" bet would be the MIJ spindles of the Fuji 8x dvd-r/dvd+r and the Sony 8x DVD+R for the TYs (even though there HAVE been reports of people getting TYG02s in the Sony 8x DVD-R flavor, but not many a VERY RARE occurance, USUALLY people get the SONY08D1 in BOTH the MIT and MIJ spindles) :)
@dakotafan
good to see ya around, i like your sig. it pretty much "sums it all up" :) good choices you got there~

actually, the "made in japan" Maxell's will ONLY be Taiyo Yuden made in the 4x flavor, in either format~ :)
the 8x Maxell MIJ are made by Hitachi, which in MY opinion are VERY good media too~ :)
sorry, didn't mean to correct ya, but, only in the 4x are the MIJ Maxells TY made (4x DVD-R is the TYG01 & the 4x DVD+R is the YUDEN000T01) :)

I haven't tried any maxell yet but hear they are very good also. I use hub printable dvd+r's almost exclusively and the maxell's are too pricy. I can usually find the verbatim DVD+R hub printables at the best price of the three and I like the printable surface of the verbs better than the printable surface of the TY's.

Yeah I like the MIJ Maxell DVD+R's. I mainly like them because I can take advantage of booktyping/bitsetting. My burner supports it, but I rarely get the oppurtunity to use it. The auto booktyping with Nero is sweet. I might order them in bulk sometime. I can't find them locally, but I'm sure you can order them online from meritline.com or rima.com. Supermediastore.com doesn't carry the MIJ Naxell's as far as I know. Cheers!

i give credit where credit is due... :)
it's become a lot more "hectic" lately here on AfterDawn...some of the newbies/junior members are getting on my nerves, but, it comes with the territory i suppose~ "relevance" is in the eyes of the beholder i guess, what one might consider "helpful" to others it's pure blasphemy~ hehe
@tokijin
i try to be as "complete" with my responses as possible, i've written full page "mini-epics" in the past to ensure i got my point across~ :) and for those that actually READ it all in it's entirety, i commend you, takes a lot of patience for that... :)

I know this is a little off topic, but has anyone seen what the Olympic Medals look like. They remind me of a DVD disk, they have a hole in the middle. At any rate Doc, I award you the Golden TY medal for contributions on media, you have beaten out the competition on getting the most recruits in your TY army for the best media.

Quote: i'm sorry if you tested them based on my recommendation, i didn't mean for your to lose out on $9.99...
No sweat... Being thorough, as you usually are, you DID implicitly state that your success was with the non-printable G05s. I can't say that I am disappointed because I bought them for one purpose: to test them... Like I said, I still have about 40 of the printable G05s left, about 300 printable TYs (both formats), and 100 or so printable Verbs (+R)... I can't consider $10 much of a loss. Especially for what I have probably saved by following the recommendations of the members here at AD before venturing out un-guided in my "Newbie" days...

Yeah I nosed around the local Wal-Mart, and it turns out they carry the Sony MIJ's and MIT's! I think I ended up with MIT's last time I went there, because I thought that's all they had. Nope. They definitely have the Sony MIJ's. They also restocked the High Grade Maxell MIJ's, so I picked up a 5 pack of those. The clerk said they carry them at Sam's Club, I'll have to check that out. It's expensive to pay $7 for a 5 pack, even for the MIJ 8x Maxell DVD+R's. Cheers!

I've been reading over these forums and now you got me curious whether or not my TY's are real or fake. I'm in Canada so my purchasing places are limited. Not much demand for TY here I guess. I buy hub printables TYG02 coded discs from blankmedia.ca and have not had problems but the stamp on the hub is not what you guys say it should be. here are some samples from different packs
GD517A208451GG
EG517A110227GG
4G521A204362GG
1K532A300079GG
Can I not see the GG00xxxx because it is hub printable? You have me concerned a litle now.
And thanks for letting me know that the verbatims are relly good but print better. I'll have to check those out. The last batch of Ritek G05 non-hub printable I got are a little different. They don't print as far to the edge or the middle and they have been giving me more problems on all my burners so I'm gonna try them Verb hub and non-hub
Thanks Guys

HELP PLESASE
Ok, Here's the deal. I've just received my first purchase of TY Media. I purchased a 100 pk of TYG02, 8x, -R. I've used several types of media in the past before deciding to make my first big purchase of TY's. I've used TDK -R, which nobody seems to recommend and I will not buy again, but they all play flawlessly. I've used Verbatim -R, MCC Code, also played flawlessly. Sony +R TY code, played flawlessly and JVC -RW, which plays flawlessly. I got ripped, price wise with my last purchase, the Sony's, paying 19.99 for 25 locally but I had to have them ASAP. That's when I decided that would never happen again and purchased 100 of these TY's online for a much better price. Well my first experience with these has left me with a big frown. My first burn was at 4x and the resulting video spits, sputters, pauses, whatever it's called from start to finish on my stand alone player. I then decided to try burning the same exact files with a JVC DVD-RW at 4x so that I wouldn't have a coaster if it didn't work. The JVC played flawlessly. On another attempt, hoping it wasn't the media. I burned another TY at 8x seeing if the change in recording speed would work. Same results, spit and sputter all the way through the video start to finish. Out of my first 2 disc of a 100 pack I have the same pausing, sputtering, stalling video and I'm sure it's the media because of trying the same burn on the JVC -RW playing perfect. If this matters, my stand alone players are Memorex and Apex. Same results with both of them. Never any compatibility problems before with -r +r or -RW media until I got these TY's. Also my burner is a Pioneer DVR-109XLC. Anybody got any ideas with this? Is it just an incompatibility issue between my stand alone players and the media? Do I have 98 blanks left that I can't use? If so, anybody want a good deal on 98 TYG02's, -R, 8x, haha. I really hope someone can help with this. I'm at a loss. Thanks.

I purchased them at meritine.com. The inner hub code is OMG, I need glasses haha. The #'s on the extreme inner hub(clear part) of the disk reads 8 517A409466GG, I'm 99% sure I read those correctly. Looked under several different lights but they are very small so it's possible I could have made a mistake. On the bottom of the disc on the outside of the clear inner ring is GG000118 and above that in is a very small 0518, I'm sure no mistakes in me reading them there.

@Jake02
the inner hub coding i refer to is the 2nd one that you found, it is OUTSIDE the clear part~ :) hehe...my eyes are too poor to even see the "magnifying glass required" numbers that you have given..LOL
you definitely got some AUTHENTIC TYG02s, however, it seems like you might have gotten a "bad batch"...before you go sending these back to meritline.com, i have that same drive as you, but, mine is just the Pioneer dvr-109 (with buffalo firmware for booktyping)...may i ask, what version firmware are you using? this is very important that you are up to date...for "normal" pioneer 109's...this is the latest:
http://wwwbsc.pioneer.co.jp/product-e/ibs/device_e/file/DVR109_FW...
1.58....lemme know which firmware revision you are currently using as if you are "out of date", that may be the reason for your skipping/issues~ :) it's either the firmware OR you did in fact get a "bad batch"...do you notice any imperfections on the disc itself? possible "spots" or small nicks in the dye surface? i burn ALL my TYG02s @8x with no problems at all, so this shouldn't be a burn speed issue, but moreso with a possibility of you gettin a "bad batch", it happens sometimes, there is NO media company out there without their "bad apples" :P
@caleb
Quote: Can I not see the GG00xxxx because it is hub printable?
the numbers/hub readings you gave are on the CLEAR portion of the TY disc...there is a good chance you can't see the GG000xxx coding from the top because it IS hub printable~ these numbers are located just OUTSIDE of the clear portion in the middle, away from the hub, NOT on the clear part by the hole :) try flipping the disc over and see if you can see it from the "bottom side-up"...i dunno if that makes sense, i don't know how else to phrase it correctly~ :)
i don't think you need to worry about authenticity if you bought them @blankmedia.ca, my cousin buys from them as he is in Canada right now too and he has never gotten "fake TYs" (assuming you bought the Taiyo Yudens from them and not some other brand name) :) no need to worry, i am willing to bet what you got in your hands are the GENUINE stuff~ :)

@kivory666
My firmware is up to date. I'm using the latest V. 1.58 firmware from Pioneer for this drive. I've thought about trying the buffalo firmware to make it capable of booktyping, I've read some about that, but since I've had no problems before this with any media -R or +R, I havn't done that. Plus I'm kinda ansy about updating firware. If you think the Buffalo firmware might help this issue I will give it a shot though. Done't make since that it would to me, but I'm no expert on this. The disc looks flawless. Obviously I haven't looked at all 100 but I've looked at quite a few under many differnt bright lights and all of them are perfect, no pitting, scratches, dye inperfections, etc, they all look perfect. Maybe I'll try one from the middle or bottom of the batch next to see if that would help. I tried the first 2 from the top and they both did the same thing. Glad to know that you use the same type media with our type drives though. That makes me think it's more than likely a bad batch. Just my luck, my first experince at making my first bulk purchase of the industrys best rated product being defective haha

@jake02
the buffalo firmware update is quite a task, MOST people that i've given detailed instructions to have NOT been able to successfully convert it...it's a 4 step process that requires cross-flashing and KNOWING exactly what you are doing with firmware/utilities...i agree with you, sometimes the risk is not worth taking for the final result. if you haven't had any problems now with the 1.58 firmware, then by all means...STICK WITH IT~ :) the buffalo firmware WILL NOT help the issue at hand because you are dealing with DVD-R format, booktyping is not even possible with your TYG02 discs~ :)
give a few dvds from the middle and near the bottom of the spindle a try, that way, we can kinda "guesstimate" whether or not you got a "bad batch" or just a few "bad apples" near the top of the spindle~
lemme know how the "middle discs" and/or the "bottom discs" work out, if they give you good results, then we can assume that you got a few bad discs near the top...if you still encounter the same issues, then, i'd have to say it's a "bad batch" and you should go about getting an RMA to meritline for an exchange/refund~ :)
MOST people don't have problems with Taiyo Yuden media, but, some do...i can only analyze this situation based on certain assumptions (we ALL have different setups at home/work with DIFFERENT specs on computers/ software differences/ etc. etc.) so even though we have the same drive/burner, our configurations might vary DRAMATICALLY prior to the burn process...out of curiousity, what software programs are you using to encode/rip/transcode/re-author/burn/etc. to the TYs?

I use:
TSUNAMI DVD EasyPack
DVD Decrypter
DVD Shrink-when needed
Nero 6 Ultra Edition to burn
I've used the same programs for a few months with all the different media types I listed before with awesome results.
My setup is:
AMD64 3000 CPU, Overclocked to 3200
Chaintech VNF4Ultra MB
1GB Corsair Value Select Rams (2x512)
Seasonic 500w PS
Asus 6200TC Video Card
Pioneer DVR-109XLC Drive (FW V 1.58)

Doc... maybe we should compile a list, possibly starting with Jakes Batch numbers. Since Im sure they use the ggooxxxxx numbers to identify when and what lot they were made. This can help us identify any bad or questionable lot numbers, keep a running list of good and questionable lot batch numbers.....
