kepping the ps3 vertical helps with exspelling the heat cos heat rises if its horizontal the heat builds up at the top of the unit where the power supply is cos the fan extaction is at the bottom. i also belive that added fan extraction not cool air intake is the key to sonys fan problem, getting rid of the heat and not filling it with more dust.

My belief is that they somehow screwed up the fan code for PS3 Fats when they released the PS3 Slim. After I updated to 3.15 my fan never even ramps up anymore, and I can't "downgrade" to an earlier version to see if that helps. My 40Gb never gave me a days problem before I updated to 3.15.

Why would the fan stay on low speed if the motherboard is melting? It doesn't make any sense, but apparently it is happening to thousands of customers. NOT OUR FAULT.
Will those of you who have working FATs with the 3.15 update chime in here and let us know if your fans seem to be working properly? It would be nice to hear from someone (who is not a Sony shill) that their fan speed increases as the unit gets hotter. I can tell you that my fan speed remains on the lowest speed no matter how hot my FAT gets, and that is what is causing this YLoD problem.

My 120Gb SLIM unit ramps up the fan almost immediately after I turn it on - completely different behavior than on my old 40Gb FAT.
The fan in my 60GB works fine following the update - well a little too fine! After approx 5 minutes it steps up a gear and withing 20 minutes it sounds like theres a jet plane in the room with me. But at least it's not over heating.

You can make that a +2 as my sons 40gb has been running since November and the fan speed changes accordingly.

i know its only temporary, i got a free 20gig ps3(Fat), i was wondering how to reflow the entire board, was going to buy the arctic thermal paste and a container of liquid flux, how much would i need to do the board on both sides. i dont know what this console has been through, i just thought i would try to fix it since it was free. does anyone know how to test the power supply, the console goes from red(stand bye) flashes green blue yellow then to red flashing light. thanks

easiest way is to hook up a atx psu to it. short the green and black to get it on. search on utube there is a vid that can describe how to do it better than i can. its prob not a psu issue though

I have removed a capacitor from the motherboard. I'm having trouble finding a replacement. if some one can send me their bad board I can see if swapping them out could work. Does anyone know if this has been tried. I noticed that the capacitor seems to have a slight bulge in it.

This is it

is a ps3 psu supposed to spike at 17v, thats what it did when i tested it with a multimeter and i tested it several times, not one time did it stay around 12v, keep in mind though that the systesm is ylod, red blinking light, trying to see if i need a psu along with fluxing the board. so it only comes on for like a second but it goes up to 17v when it does that. thanks

that is a high spike. usually it will be like 11.5v or 12.5v but not that much. mine was consistent at around 11.56v. 17v cant be good.

i was heating up one of the little black chips on ps3 for reheat and fluxing process, and the little black chip bubbled a little, so i got the heat away from it quickly. is that going to be a problem. thanks

I reflowed mine about 2 weeks ago and haven't used it since. I turned it on yesterday just to try and watch a bluray and it yloded immediately. Are you kidding me? I haven't even used this thing. This has nothing to do with overheating.

YLoD on PS3 40Gb with very light usage - happened after 3.15 Update and then playing MW2. I am pissed.

Absolutely NO DUST INSIDE - not my fault.

ok, i have two motherboards, cechel01 and cechp01, supposed to have the red screen error, but neither will power up(ylod), i have bought arctic silver 5, i have used gilksy method, and then tried oven baking both with no clean flux applied. Put them back together with dvd drive boards attached and still ylod. Any thoughts to this, was just going to try to fix them and get rid of them, i already have a ps3 repaired by gilksy method that works perfect(for a month so far). thanks for your help.

I decided to reflow mine one last time and trade it in at GameStop while it was still working. They gave me $110.00 in store credit, which I can now use to pay for a new XBox. Forget Sony.

hotice17 do not keep running it. mine did that for about a month. gaming for an hour or 4 then ylod. let it cool and then back up and running. in your case(and mine) i think it is actually overheating. i would rip it apsart and just stick some as5 on there and see if it continues to ylod. casue it will permanently ylod in about a month from now if you continue on the same path.
