manugirl, sounds like it is overheating immediately, did you use enough (or too much) heatsink compound on the chips? Thats what I would assume anyway.
Also, did you bend the "clips" to apply more pressure on the heatsinks to the chips?
Hope you get it sorted .. at least it turns on ;)

Have you put everything back on as it should be. You don't have bits left over / lost do you :)
Mine overheated but I had forgotten to connect the can power again .. haha! Obviously you don't have this issue, but certainly sounds like a heatsink connection type issue :S

Hi.
Remove the heatsink and have a look on the cooling surface if it make any contact and have as5 on it.

Yeap thats the one, you must have 2 perfect flat ones. Are they covered with AS5?

You have a connection problem,
i suggest you use mx3 or tuniq tx4 and put a thick coating or add more pressure on the heatsinks.i know for fact that mx3 can be put thick and as a matter of fact using it thick works better, dont have any experience with tx4 but will work even better as is easily spreadable as as5 but better than as5.

manugirl - did you bend the clips before you put them back in. Can't remember if it's in the gilksy guide, but it's in a related guide :) The two clips that you screw down to put pressure on the chips and heatsinks can be bent a bit so the pressure is greater. I think there is a washer fix as well if you haven't seen this already.
At least it sounds like you have found the cause of the overheating, and haven't had it YLOD in the meantime :)

Hi Guys
I've got a 40Gb which switches green for a few seconds then the fan revs up to full load then shuts down. Not the typical YLOD that I've seen?
I've reflowed the unit with no clean flux, applied AS5 (very thin layer) bent the clamps and added a washer to give a little more presure.
I've had a few attempts at this one, the contact area for heatsinks to chips seem good.
There is no visable damage to the board, no real signs of warping.
Thought about a faulty temperature sensor or PSU, am I missing something daft?
here's a vid of it starting..

Any help would be great
Cheers

Sorry to spoil your happiness but as5 dont work OK if put thick.
You have to re-open ps3 and try thin layer or use other thermal paste.
Dont leave it like this because you will have a ylod soon.

colinjest - thanks for all your work on the ylod but can't leave the donation link in your post so it's edited out. Now you could put it in your profile page since that is your page and has different rules.

Originally posted by sgebbie: Well now I'm really at a loss for what to do.. My PS3 died again lol I was firing up some 09 Madden Head Coach and everything was fine. I played it for just a little while and then exited the game. I was pretty tired and forgot I had left it on. My fan was still on it and it was only sitting on the main interface so I didn't think it was that big of a deal that it stayed on overnight.
It was only warm when I was done with it. YLOD the next morning. That was only about 5 or 6 hours? I played a crazy full out Madden 09 season for longer than that straight through and nothing blew up on me. Has me a bit puzzled.
I really don't think this was a heat related issue again this time either. I could potentially see this being an actual failure of something internal in that power supply since it was getting so hot without the fan on it to begin with. Something with that wasn't right so I'm going to start there. I might hook my tester PC power supply back up to it and see if i still get the YLOD with that hooked up instead.
Any suggestions are welcome.
Just an update for anyone interested. Since my YLOD on Madden Head Coach 09, I did another heat gun fix and had it working again but only for a few days this time before YLOD again. At this point, I'm about finished with this PS3 and possibly my other broken one as well.
I believe some of these systems have board or possibly even chip issues that won't be able to be resolved without a reball or chip replacement or both. Not sure I have enough money or patience left at this point to continue trying to figure these things out. Is it even possible to buy replacement chips?
If I do continue, I may look into a reball of one of these and see how long the system can go without YLOD after a reball. Might be a waste of the $99 bucks but the place that does it is local to me and honestly I'd feel better knowing one way or another if it is a perm fix or not. If it is, to me it would be worth it to have a good working backwards compatible PS3. If anyone has had one of these things reballed please share the results!

Yep .. get rid of it while it's working as it sounds like a temporary fix sadly.
I did the same .. have had the PS3 slim with a 320GB hdd in it for a fair while now. So much quieter and nicer :) I never used Linux (now removed with firmware update anyway I think) or backward compatibility (who wants to play PS2 games :P ) so yeah .. win!

I'd like to thank all you guys that have tried this "re-balling" technique. A 40GB PS3 in YLOD condition was given to me. After research, it seems that Sony only recommends IR to reheat the chips. I'm not sure if thats correct info or not, but I give props to GILKSY and all the other guys and gals who have used a heat gun! It works!
My system had been tinkered with. It had no hard drive and the cover had been removed. Fortunately, thats about as far as they went. The original thermal compound made me believe that I was going to pull the chips off the board. It was extremely dry and of lithium composition(or whatever the white crap is). Used alcohol to clean the chips and all surrounding thermal pads.
Using a similar technique as GILKSY with a heat gun, I circled the chips about 10 minutes a side at 375C. I also preheated the board, as it gave me more piece of mind about the board warping. Cool down took about 20 minutes, to where the board and chips were cool.
Out came the Artic Silver 5 and a credit card. Used a recommended layer of the good stuff and reassembled, minus the top cover. It takes a bit of caution and patients to get the heatsink/fan plate to sit on the chips without smearing compound. So be careful! I also bent the retainer clips a bit.
So far, 12 hours and counting :) I slipped in a 120GB drive I had kick'n around and plugged in the controller. It was about 3 year dead, so I did the update biting nails! I don't have any games, so I downloaded about 10 GB worth of demos last night.
Thanks again GILKSY and everyone else who contributed to this thread! I got a free PS3! :)
