Thanks.
I just followed your steps for a copy of GT4. Everthing wen't well until I tried to change the Booktype in DVDCrypter. My DVD burner is a Toshiba SD-R5372 so I didn't have a tab to select. I guess since I couldn't change it to DVD-ROM, the burn didn't work in the PS2 machine. All I got was insert a Playstation or Playstation2 game or am I missing something else. Im new to all of this stuff.
I thought after I follwed the steps, I could use that DVD as a real copy.
What else do I need to use these backups?
For data, I first used a Ridata G05 8x DVD-R and then I tried a CompUSA DVD+R (Infome R20) disc with the same results. (I know about the crappy COMPUSA disc, but thats the only DVD+R I had on hand and the guide said to use DVD+R. I usually use DVD-R for my DVD copies.

You need some type of modification to play PS2 backups and imports.
1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter.
Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on an 8x DVD-R.
2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341 If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Sony or Phillips DVD-R's. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.
CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/262544 If you really want to do the PS2 backup thing right, pick up some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. I only burn to TYG02, the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. So far I've never had a lag, skip, freeze, or boot failure since I switched to Taiyo Yuden's. With results like that, why would I use anything else?
3. Q. Do I need some type of mod to play PS2 backups or imports?
A. Yes you need a modchip: http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2 Swap Magic: http://swapmagic3.com/ Memory Card Exploit (Doesn't work with v.11 PS2 and later): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289 HD Loader: http://www.hdloader.com.au/hardinstall#prepare or

Did you followd my actual GRAN TURISMO 4 guide? or did you follow the 50CENT BULLETPROOF guide? To get a successful DVD5 of GT4, you need to follow my GRAN TURISMO 4 guide, here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/5/275350
Again, if you have all the tools and follow my guide carefully, then you SHOULD NOT have any problems at all. Since your Toshiba burner is not listed in DVD Decrypter, I recommend you to use high quality DVD-R media (ie Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or Maxell DVD-R "made in japan").
Keep me posted on how's your results. I recommend you slowly follow my GT4 guide once again and restart all over.
**NOTE: you must have DVD Decrypter to rip the whole GT4 ISO into your hard drive, then continue from there.
Good luck!!

After reading over his posts, I just don't think he has Swap Magic or a modchip. Could be the media though.

The disc burning went fine & Yes, I don't have a mod-chip or Swap Magic (plain old machine). I guess I need to get one of those. Which one is easier ( so the kids can do it) & better? Any help on these matters is appreciated.

To play copies you need either a Modchip OR Swap Magic. Without one of those, it won't work.
I'm afraid you can't use RW's disks with the PS2 mate. The laser won't read it, and you might damage it.

@mano22
If your PS2 isn't chipped or modded (ie modchip, swap magic with fliptop/slidecard/slide tool, etc), then you can't play any PS2 backup games.
That's a tough call because nearly 99% of all PS2 consoles doesn't like DVD+RW regardless of what media brands. You may get away with "book typing" them into DVD-ROM, so there's a 50-50 chances you're likely to have a successful boot only. I've never used DVD+RW media for PS2 games at all. However, I've used hundreds of DVD+R (high quality media from Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim and Maxell "mij by Hitachi") and "book typing" them into DVD-ROM and so far, all of my backups plays flawlessly.

Hey, grandmaster ALC, I did'nt want to attack you. - Sorry! Your ripping-tutorial for 50Cent seemed to be too simple for me first. But it is obvious, that some missing ads and credits movies will not injure the gameplay. When I wrote, you are "selling" your tutorial to us, I did not mean, that you sell it for money. We all work for honour, don't we do so? Now I think, that it's time to thank you and all other rippers, who post their proofed tutorials for newbies and people like me (who have not always enough time to figure out the right way by themselve.) I have only one more question - how to get your high praised Taiyo Yuden DVD media here in Austria? I've never seen them in a shop before.
Good luck and my best greetings to you and the community - biTstring

Well, dunno about Austria, but why don't you try ordering them from the UK? It would be a lot cheaper than to order them from the US...
www.svp.co.uk
That's where i get them from now. (got them today Alcohol, just need to pick them up from the post office, i'm getting excited!...)
Quote: {DV 3309} Verbatim (Taiyo Yuden) 8x DVD-R in Spindle Tubs of 25
Verbatim have entrusted the manufacture of the disc to the world renowned Taiyo Yuden factory.
This are the ones i ordered, and i'm gonna start buying now. They are the best of the best...

Congrats on becoming an AD addict Alkohol. Kinda funny we both become one at the same time. Burn on!
@Mano22 You might get a DVD+RW booktyped to play on the PS2, but it even if it does you'll put a ton of wear and tear on the PS2 laser. The surface of a DVD+/-RW is very difficult for the PS2 to read, hence all the warnings not to use them. Go with some quality DVD+/-R's like Alkohol suggested. I order Taiyo Yuden's off http://www.supermediastore.com Get some Taiyo Yuden's or Verbatim's, you won't go wrong either way.

Yeah, we sure did hit the "Addict Club" now. Keep up the good work buddy and burn on. In the mean time, I'm trying a method for "XENOSAGA Episode 1 (US version), I hope everything turns out right. If it did, then I'm going to add/post on my guide here.

That's a great idea. There isn't a very good DVD-9 to DVD-5 guide for that one. I used to actually have the original of that, good game. Not quite Xenogears, but it's good nonetheless. I'm thinking of making a guide for Dragon Quest VIII, but I have a chip, so I'd have no idea if it works with Swap Magic. P.S. how do you get screen caps? I'd need to know how to do that if I make a guide. I tried hitting alt+PrintScreen, but that doesn't work. Thanks.

i know most people find this a challenge to do but for those who do it cause they have nop other hope and waste hours of their time, just burn to dvd 9, using toxic patcher, which allows for ps2 to read from 2nd layer.
lets get copyin!!!!!

The PS2 can read the second layer fine. It's swap Magic that doesn't work with DVD-9 games. Good Modchips like the DMS 4 and Matrix Infinity auto patch DL games. The toxic DL image patcher only works with modchips. It will not help anyone with Swap Magic. If you have a chip, I agree that's a good idea, but most DVD-9 to DVD-5 guides have people with Swap Magic in mind.

Nice comment/feedback from you. It's good if you can do it that way (using Toxic Patch) and burn it onto a DVD+R DL media. However, keep in mind that Swap Magic can not support DVD+R DL at the moment. In addition, I find it (not quite worth) to backup a PS2 game onto a DVD+R DL yet, simply because the prices are still too damn expensive. On the other hand, I find it amazing and quite challenging to rebuild games, it's quite fun -- afterall, "burning dvd movies and burning/rebuilding PS2 games" are my hobbies/passion.
Cheers!!

So what do u actually do when u rebuild it technically? Does it actually delete anything? Or are u just simply compressing it to fit on DVD5 and not deleting anything, whether or not it is or isnt valuable/necessary for/to the game/ISO.?
How I make extra money:(for games/clothes/cable etc)
V7 PS2 DMS4 PRO flashed w/ ToxicBIOS w/ brand new laser, a 400c, the best PS2 laser out there & V7 PS2 w/ Swapmagic 3.6+

I'm not quite sure what you mean. You mean it works for GT4, 50 cent bullet proof, or are you referring to Toxic DL patcher? I'm sure this guide works, Alkohol is one of the more knowledgable people on this site. He isn't into posting BS guides that don't work. Cheers!

What game (50CENT, PATH OF NEO, NFSMW or GT4)? If you need them, I'll try to upload once I get home. I'm at work right now -- in the mean time, enjoy reading the guide.
