Originally posted by ReferMan: Ok, just finished my first blu ray disk. I split a 8.3g mkv file with mkvmerge. I extracted both halves with mkvextract. I ran both h264 video files through h264.info and changed the level to 4.1. The audio was AC3, so I didn't have to use aec3togui. I ran both video and audio from each half of my movie through tsmuxer and created a m2ts file. I then ran both my m2ts files through tsremux and burned a UDF DVD-ROM disk using Nero 8.0 after changing the UDF level to 2.5. I burned onto a double sided DVD-R. It plays in my PS3, I have 5.1 surround sound, but something else that I have is a big green line across the bottom (like where the bottom letterbox black line would be. The top is black like normal, but the bottom is bright neon green. It's pretty distracting. Anyone else had problems with this, if not, any ideas on what's causing it? Also, I noticed that if I skip chapters or fast forward, the disk will stop reading, but as long as I don't do that, it plays fine.
Thanks!!
Yes I had that problem with one of the video files I converted to a AVCHD disc, so now I just leave them as a m2ts file. I don't really see any benefit to creating a AVCHD disc as the PS3 plays the m2ts files just fine as is.

Yes. Each file is larger than 4gb and it is about the size of D5 DVD.

FYI guys, there is no need to split files when creating m2ts for PS3 playback. I have several files on my PS3 HDD about 8gb in size which play great, the whole way though too. DD 5.1 surround also plays from the HDD in m2ts format.
I guess you'd need to split if you're not networked but it might be a cost savings to get networked rather than using a bunch of DVD5s or re-writables.

That's impossible, the PS3's file system wont allow a 8gb file to be put onto it.

I'm not joshin', please try it. I was surprised too!
If you have streaming capabilities the better programs to use would be TVersity, but you have to change the m2ts file extension to m2t as the PS3 will not recognize m2ts from TVersity (weird eh?).
I use Cyberlink Media Deluxe, which I think is great. There is no indexing, or daily scans or updates. All you need to do is have a folder monitored and keep your movie files there. No renaming as well, the PS3 see's the m2ts file as a mpeg2 file, once on the PS3 is shows as AVC. Cyberlink is not freeware, so you'd need to aquire it some other way.
Once again please try this for yourself, you'll be surprised too.

Oh you're streaming it, you made it sound like you were playing the file directly from the PS3.

Streamed or copied to the PS3 HDD, both work.

The PS3 internal drive is not limited to 4gb like the FAT partition. The internal drive uses some kind of proprietary file system. It is only external USB media that is limited to using FAT partitions.
I have 3 video files on my PS3 hard drive that are larger than 4gb, the biggest is 7.97gb, which I transferred via copying from a DVD9. Also, be careful of this as it is easy enough to put files onto the PS3 HDD but try getting a file larger than 4gb off the HDD! See here... http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/625490

thanks for the info. I burned my M2TS file directly to my double-sided dvd-r and it's playing fine. No green line this time. It also seemed to fix the problem that I was having with fast forward. There's no chapters now, but it's no biggie. Thanks dude!

Quote: REferman: EAC3GUI is really picky for me too. I don't know what error you are getting exactly but I found that the path to the file you are trying to convert is important. I usually put the file directly into my C: drive (C:\filename.dts) then try to use the program. All of my files have worked perfectly after that. You also have to make sure that you have the sonic decoder Ryu77 talked about. Good luck!
Mjstriker,
I finally got back to trying to convert DTS to AC3 after getting my first disk (with original AC3 content)burned to a playable DVD on my PS3. I have finally figured all this confusing stuff out. lol What I was doing wrong before was like you said, not placing my files directly to C:\filename.dts, and converting it back into C:\. But also what I was doing wrong was that I didn't download the EAC3to.zip file from the link posted by Ryu77. Once I did all that I'm back in business buoooyyy!
Thanks for all the help from everyone!

Just found something and I had a question.
Here's an NFO file from a movie I just got, and this is what it says. What caught my eye as being different from other movies I'm getting is the codec, where it says x264, Level 4.1. That means that I don't have to run the video through H264.info to get it to play on the PS3 right? Just take care of the DTS through EAC3toGUI, and make a M2TS file and burn!! Correct?

This might be a noobish question but how do you make an NFO file for your movie? Or at least get the precise frame rate?

You would think so. However, I have encoded with the Nero recode AVC engine and that produces a 3.1 level AVC file. It wouldn't play on the PS3 after I muxed it into a m2ts with tsMuxeR, so I extracted the video file, ran it through h264 info and it played fine. I can't explain why this works but it all I know is it does.

Ryu77, you are correct. I tried a sample of the movie I downloaded and it didn't work. (I couldn't wait for a reply before I tried it, I know you understand) Anyway, it didn't work no matter what the NFO said. So from now on I will be running all my h264 video files through H264.info to get it to play on PS3. At this point there aren't any short cuts I suppose. By the way, if it wasn't for you Ryu77 I'd still be trying to find out how to do this.
I thank you.

No problem... I have helped quite a few people here at Afterdawn, especially on this thread. I enjoy helping others as I recall what it was like when I was when I was struggling to understand this digital media technology.

I have used mkv2vob and it created vob file, no problem, but it is to big for a dvd. its 4.65, original mkv was 4.37. I've tried the mkvextractgui method, but due to , limited hd space and annoyance it has become to tedious of a method for me to use, plus I still couldn't get the .ts file to play properly. I have created the vob file, but it si too large, I just want to reduce the size to 4.37gb so it will fit on a dvd. I am willing to sacrifice audio quality. I had to reduce the bitrate of the .ac3 track after I extracted it from the mkv file when I used the mkvextrac method and it got me a managable file size. But now I just want to get this on my ps3.
Any suggetions to get a 4.65gb vob file on a dvd?

Ok, I think I actually got it.
1. I extracted the ac3 audio with mkvextractgui.
2. lowered bitrate with Besweetgui.
3. used mkvmerge
- added original 4.37gb mkv file, unchecked the audio track,
- added lower bitrate ac3 audio file
- muxed to get a 4.1gb mkv file
4. Used mkv2vob to create a 4.3gb vob.
I'm currently burning it to a dvd so i can play it on my ps3, but I'm pretty sure this is going to work, I hope so...

Yes, it should work. Just out of curiousity, what bitrate are you using for the re-encoded ac3 track?

I think 256, but I dont really care about the audio, I only have crappy stereo speakers.
I did run into a problem. Th vob will technically play on the ps3 but I had an issue with the beginning. It wont paly, the screen just stays black, but when I pause the movie, and button mash a bit, it allows me to fast forward, the video seems to play fine as long as you get it moving, I can just start it from 9 secs just fine. The odd thing is that the icon for the video plays from the beginning fine, I copied it from the dvd (over 4 gb). So thats confusing. Why wold the video not start automatically?
Also how can I change the file extension if I make a .ts file. I have another mkv I converted using the mkvextract method because mkv2vob didn't work. I'm using xp DO I just add .mpg on he end because the file name I see is just xxxxxxx, there's no .ts on the end of it.
I was just thinking, what if you just cut off the first second of the video, might this solve the problem? But, I cannot find a suitable vob cutter/editer freeware, any suggestions?

if a mkv file does not have ac3, lets say dts does it mean it wont properly make an mpg file using mkvtovob or gotsent? i keep running into runtine error 53 trying to convert a mkv file that does not show ac3 in it, like it will say ass,dts,av1 and such but no ac3.

As I said before, I didn't really like GotSent too much but it sounds like you are right about your problem. I would extract the audio from the mkv file, re-encode it to Dolby Digital @ 640kbs, remux it into a new mkv file (Video + new Dolby track. Leave out the original DTS track) and then run it through GotSent or mkv2vob...

Ok, I would be thinking about the future though. Are you playing these on a Plasma or LCD?

It sounds like some corrupt data packets at the start of the video.

Are you using tsMuxeR to create your Transport Stream file (ts)? You could simply output m2ts instead. This format is compatible with the PS3 as it is the native format used on Blu-ray discs.

It should work but I can't think of an application that can cut a vob file with h264 video at a frame based level. You could try avidemux but I am not 100% sure how that will turn out.

I ran into another problem with a different mkv file.
The mkv is 1280x544 but what comes out is like a 16:9 file, I think I saw somewhere 956x548, or something. I chose 2.35:1 in mkvextrace, nothing. I manually put in 1280x544 in h264info, nothing. I'm confused why it isn't working, either in mkv2vob or the mkvextrace method, it comes out the same.

Hi, noob here,
This tsremux app appears to detect evo files. I converted one of the evo files i have and got an m2ts file. I renamed the extension to .m2t and tried streaming to ps3. The ps3 didn't support the file. Is it possible to play evo files using this app.
O, and the video stream was vc-1 and audio stream was DD+
any help is appreciated.

I would recommend using EVOdemux to extract the streams first. Then you will be able to work with them individually as a raw stream. Here's a link for EVOdemux...
