So it seems that it was captured from a HDTV broadcast, which I thought were all mpeg2 (they are in Australia)... Then it was re-encoded to h264, then again to VC-1... Now you want to re-encode it back to h264. I'm not liking the chances of keeping the quality high.
Trogdor11, what TV are you watching this on? Is the quality still high? When I say high, I mean comparing it to a Blu-ray source.
I am not sure about other Countries but the quality of DTV broadcasts here in Australia (for movies) are roughly about the same quality as regular DVD's. Sometimes you will see quality that is somewhere in the middle of DVD and Blu-ray but never is it any competition for an original Blu-ray disc.
Also, since it was converted from 25fps to 23.976fps, I'm wondering if they have done that conversion correctly. Is the frame rate perfectly smooth? Or does it look like it drops a frame every now and then?
I am going to be watching this on a 46 inch Sony Bravia 1080P television playing on a PS3. I have been unable to view it on this setup, except as a Tversity stream from my PC, which is compressed by the software in order to stream... and it stutters a bit (likely because of my PC). Played back on the PC through VLC, it looks fantastic but a little jittery (once again, assuming my lowly P4 3ghzHT computer just isn't quite up to task). Apparently, this is THE best release of these particular films until they are officially released on Blu-Ray (If you know what films I am talking about, you will understand why I am not holding my breath for a hi-def release anytime in the near future). Here is some more info from the included document.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Release Notes
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The original German Premier HD broadcast had a stellar picture despite the deblocking and annoying video glitches plus it had over 20 major video glitches and a German opening crawl. The original British Sky Broadcasting version was perfect except slightly softer- it lacked the super fine detail that the Premier edition had but also had severe deblocking. The HBO/Showtime/Cinemax broadcasts are worth pooping on and not even contenders.
I suppose on many levels this release is pointless. First, for the reason that I re-encoded it to fit a DVD9 and that defeats the rules of high quality so you?ll get no arguments from me there and second there is a better version on the horizon I could have been more patient for. So consider this an appetizer for those with screen sizes 70" and below. I personally love the quality on this and have no doubt many will too.
What I did here was I took the high quality German Premier HD H.264 picture quality edition originally posted by "Born In A Skip" (THANK YOU!!!), edited in the English opening crawl and replaced all the individual frames that had video glitches with the also very good quality Sky broadcasting H.264 originally posted by 'BK (THANK YOU TOO!!!!), time adjusted to 23.976 fps for NTSC, used the retail DVD 5.1 AC3 track and slapped it together on a DVD9 sized universally compatible format for everyone to enjoy either on their PC or XBOX 360. You should play it on your 360 as the PC decoders MAY show some minor blocking in areas where the 360 does not.
I know exactly what movies you are talking about, I have converted two of the six already for playback on my PS3 using the same file.
1. I first converted the whole file with PS3video9 to get back to h264. I used the HDTV AVC profile to maintain the 1080p resolution, this will unfortunately lose approx. 3 mb/s video bitrate but the end result is a much more manageable file size, >6 gigs total.
2. ripped the AC3 track from the DVD I already own.
3. extracted the raw h264 file from your new mp4 file, ran it through h264info with no changes.
4. muxed the newer h264 file with the DVD AC3 track using TSmuxer.
5. Burned my new m2ts file using Nero burning rom,
UDF_DVD version 2.5.
Everything synced up fine and I am happy with the results.

I tried converting a srt file to sup but TSmuxer could not recognize the stream.
The .sup used on regular DVD's and the .sup used on Blu-ray discs are different. You will need to convert the srt subtitle to the sup format recognised by the Blu-ray (m2ts) format.
Try SUPread for this conversion. I am in the middle of doing this myself. This morning I just finished re-encoding the video. When I get home from work I will attempt to mux it all together... With subtitles. Hopefully I can post back here with good news.

By the way, I just wanted to let everybody know that I am in the process of adding a useful links section to the bottom of the first post I made on the front page of this thread. So now, if anyone is looking for any of the software mentioned on this thread, you can just refer them to the front page (as linked to below)...
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/621809
My plans are to provide links for all the software needed for anything mentioned on this thread. I will also add explanations for what each application does.

I'm not sure where to load the srt file, I see you can load a sup file... I might be missing something, I mean I just finished my mid-nights shift so I'm a little sleepy. I think this proggy converts sup-->srt, I need the other way around.

I am also having this same problem. Someone on the Doom9 forum said it can be used to create the sup format as used on Blu-ray discs. I am trying to figure it out... ?
EDIT: I just realised I posted a link to an older version of SUPread. Try this one... http://pel.hu/down/SUPread.exe.
I got it working, you will need this (abc.png) too... http://pel.hu/down/abc.png

Great,it will open a srt file... but the one I have must be damaged or something because it will not open. Seems like this one will work.
Thanks once again,

No.... That's a problem with MKVextract (something to do with the first 3 hex characters).
Open up the srt subtitle in an application like Subtitle Workshop and save a new copy of the subtitle. That should fix it up. Also... Download the "abc.png" that I just posted above.
Note: It seems that these subs will only work with 16:9 aspect ratio video (1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080). If you have a 2.35:1 video that has been cropped, you will need to add borders and re-encode it.

With regards to WMV playback, I've been looking for information on exactly what video profiles the PS3 can playback. I have examples of WMV files that playback fine on the XBox360, but either don't playback at all on the PS3 or playback with no video.
I understand there is a limitation on the audio side (only 2-channel WMA) but really am looking for some information on profiles supported by PS3 for WMV video playback.

Thank you tripplite...
Which list do you mean? The one in the Blu-ray section? http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/639346
It might be best to link people directly to that thread ^ rather than "here".
I really enjoy helping others and I plan to add a lot more useful information to that thread. If at anytime you can contribute, you are more than welcome. :-D

I use it on the final M2TS file but only the first file in the split works, all the rest have audio but no video.
is there another tool to split M2TS files that actually works

Why are you splitting? Are you networked through a router?

When you say the rest, just how many files are you splitting to? Also, I am curious like Odin is as to your reason for splitting?
It is possible that the video stream was encoded outside of the h264 level 4.1 guidelines. You just may be lucky enough that none of these advanced encoding options came into play in your first file.

the files I have are 8 to 15 Gig each. I split because I dont have any d/l DVDs. I can not stream because I am using wireless.
Also I just bought a 500GB external and formated it to Fat 32 with this software called 'swissknife' so my PS3 will see it. unfortunately fat 32 is limited to 4GB files so now I have no other choice but to split these files.

If you are using a router with your wireless set up you can still copy to the PS3 HDD. People I know use TVersity, I prefer Cyberlink Media Deluxe. Since I mainly use m2ts the PS3 recognizes this file type with Cyberlink without renaming the file extension. TVersity you must rename m2ts-->m2t, also with CMD there is no scanning or indexing, just monitor a folder, drop the file is and away you go.
The only drawback with a wired connection is the transfer rate will probably be slow, unless your wireless is a "N" router.
I suggest reformat your external HDD back to NTFS, keep it connected to your PC and aquire CMD or TVersity.
EDIT:
FYI, with m2ts the file size is unlimited on the PS3 HDD, Ryu77 can confirm this.

Well I only have the 40GB PS3 and have many large files over 8gb so space will fill up quick on the internal HD. I figured how to split the files and view them in parts. But this only works where I still have the original MKV. I use MKVEXTRACTGUI then MKVMERGEGUI then choose the global tab and enable splitting.
Now if only theres a way to do it for the files i already converted to M2TS...

Use the lastest version of TSmuxerGUI, load your m2ts, choose "demux". You will then have a raw video and audio file, hopefully they are both compatible with MKVmerge, which they should be, use MKVmerge and make your new mkv.
I still think you should keep the m2ts's intact, even if you have to transfer one at a time to your PS3 HDD. If you don't like the movie then delete it, at least you didn't have to go through the effort of splitting when you didn't need to.
That's just my two cents... anyway, it's up to you.

nope this doesnt work. TSMUXERGUI crashes when I try to add an M2TS file. Also your comment about 802.1N , I dont thin PS3 supports it. I think the max transfer rate on PS3 wireless is about 1MB/S
I just realised I have 4 movies that are already in M2TS format. I dont want to put them on the PS3 HD I want to have a library I can watch any time.
HELP!!! Is there anyone who knows of any way to split M2TS files that will play individually????

I figured I can split my 8GB file in two with a standard file splitter and if the second part is corrupt, I split that into 10MB pieces untill I find a piece that works (ie I found my keyframe) I then reconstruct the second part from the keyrame piece. of course I will miss a few seconds of video untill I find the key frame.
bUT this is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS way of doing it. I cant belive no one has created a file splitter for M2TS.
or does anyone know of a file splitter that can recreate starting from the 2nd part?
Ie i have a 4 gig file and want to split in two but I only want the 2nd part written to disk... this will help me quickly find the key frame
