Thanks! I have Sony DVD-R with a white top. I returned my memorex for them. Before I go and open them wanted to make sure I had the right ones this time. I know thier the right ones but then I read about booktyping, so I was'nt sure if booktyping +R would be better. I'm new at this so I want to waste as least $$ as posible and burn the best way possible. So I'll just stick to the Sony -Rs. You guys are a big help.

Just so I know, is there anyway to booktype DVD+R with CloneCD or CloneDVD. Maybe when I run out of -R I'll want to use my +R that I use for movies on PS2 games. I do have DVDdecrypter, But just would like to know.

One day I'll learn, but for now I have to ask alot of questions. If I can find this info somewhere else, Sorry! I have looked.

I've recently switched to those Sony DVD-R's with the white top for backing up movies. They're good quality, my Nero CD/DVD Speed scans have been very good with them. There's not much to it. Use DVD Decrypter. I'm not sure about booktyping with CloneDVD. Clone CD wouldn't involve booktyping because it's a CD burning program. If I remember correctly, CloneDVD doesn't backup PS2 games, just movies. Most people use DVD Decrypter, Nero, or Alcohol 120% for backing up PS2 games. Nero is excellent for booktyping, because you can set it to do it automatically.

1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter.
Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on a quality 8x DVD-R.

DVD Decrypter : http://www.mrbass.org/dvdrip/

88. Q. How do I burn PS2 DVD games with Alcohol 120%?
A. Ripping the game to your Hard Drive:
1. Insert your disc.
2. Open Alcohol 120%.
3. Click Image Making Wizard.
4. Check Ignore read errors, select your recorder, leave the never seperate box alone.
5. Click Next. Select a destination for the game. Click Start.
Once the process is complete, you'll get an mds and an mdf file. Click finish, if necessary.

Burning the game to DVD:
1. Insert your blank disc.
2. Right click the mdf file.
3. Select Image Burning Wizard.
4. Select your recorder, set the write speed to 4x.
5. Click next.

You need some type of mod to play PS2 backups/imports.

3. November 2005 @ 04:20
1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter.
Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on a quality 8x DVD-R.

2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/240341
If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Sony or Phillips DVD-R's. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, Dynex, Princo, Bulqpaq, etc.
CMC Magnetics is garbage. Need proof (Thanks to Alkohol):
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/262544
If you really want to do the PS2 backup thing right, pick up some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's. I only burn to TYG02, the 8x Taiyo Yuden DVD-R's. So far I've never had a lag, skip, freeze, or boot failure since I switched to Taiyo Yuden's. With results like that, why would I use anything else? The brand of media you use means very little.
The key determinant of media quality is the Media ID. For info on the Media ID, check the bottom of this thread.
Try this link for all types of different info on media quality, compatibility, and console reliability: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia

3. Q. Do I need some type of mod to play PS2 backups or imports?
A. Yes you need a modchip: http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2 Swap Magic: http://swapmagic3.com/ Memory Card Exploit (Doesn't work with v.11 PS2 and later): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/109289 HD Loader: http://www.hdloader.com.au/hardinstall#prepare or

You should use CD-R's for the flash disc. Do you have the DMS 4 EZI Pro or Lite? Does your PS2 still boot originals?

I used crap media to flash my Matrix Infinity. What happens when you insert the flash discs? Follow these directions.

104. Q. I can't get my DMS 4 or Matrix Infinity to boot backups/imports, what's going on?
A. You need to flash the chip with the latest firmware to boot backups and imports.
DMS 4 Pro SE or Pro: http://www.savefile.com/files.php?fid=3138141
DMS 4 Lite or Lite SE: http://www.savefile.com/files.php?fid=8823396
Matrix Infinity: http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=news

Note: There are a ton of Matrix Infinity Clones out there. If you flash a Matrix Infinity clone with the official MI firmware, you'll fry the clone chip. That's a little gift from the Matrix Team to you for not researching and making sure you got a legit MI. After reading this FAQ, there's no excuse for ending up with a MI Clone.
Use Alcohol 120% to burn the bin file to CD-R.
Alcohol 120%: Alcohol 120%: http://www.free-downloads.net/programs/Alcohol_120_

Burn the Firmware to CD-R with these instructions:
1. Unzip the firmware.
2. Insert your blank disc.
3. Open Alcohol 120%.
4. Go to File-->Open and browse to the cue file. Double click it.
5. Once it's open under Alcohol 120%, right click the cue file and click image burning wizard.
6. Select your recorder, leave the write method alone, set the write speed to 4x, set the datatype to PS2, and click next

Tank21, if the chip is still flashed with the DMS 0.6 flash, tell me what the console does when you press and hold L1 during boot, and again when you press and hold box during boot. what is indicated on screen.

if you press and hold those indicated buttons above when in standby and keep them pressed till it boots and get nothing on screen then the chip is not installed correctly. L1 should give you a black screen with the text "DMS4 Disabled, press reset" and box will take you to the configuration menu.

i did find out that the chip isnt installed correctly. it might be burned out or it may just be faulty. but now my problem lies with the enablity to be able to check it. ive looked at the chip and everything looks right. but it is the chip. i tried to use that test chip but somehow it burned out. i think ill probably go with the swap magic it sounds a whole lot less fool-proof. thanks again for the help.

you may have damaged the chip but it's very unlikely that the chip was faulty from the start. have it tested by a modder and if it's good then pay them to install it, you can get it installed for about the same price as the swap magic disks and then there is no disk rebuilding or disk swapping issues.

Well tank21, that's why I don't recommend the solderless chips. Stories like yours are commonplace in the dms3.com forums. Most people simply aren't skilled enough to install the solderless chips. There's not much margin of error. It's usually better to solder them in anyway. Paying a pro to install a solder chip costs about the same amount, and there's nothing to worry about with reputable modders like KC or Davbere. If you're interested, here's some info on solder chips and reputable modders.

5. Q. What modchip should I get?
A. Matrix Infinity (Green Dot), DMS 4 Pro SE, or the Crystal Chip 1.1. The DMS 4 Pro SE has a HD Loader built into the flash and all the feature's you'd expect from a quality modchip, I recommend the DMS 4 SE Pro, because it has a 2MB flash built into the chip, and it's only about $10 more than the DMS 4 SE Lite. If you're interested in playing games off a HD, take a look at the DMS 4 Pro SE.
http://www.dms3.com/dms4se/features.html

The Matrix Infinity is the grandfather of auto boot modchips. It was the first modchip to auto boot backups/imports with no swapping/resetting. It's feature packed and simple to use. Matrix Chips are probably a little more durable than the other two, and extremely reliable. There are a lot of Matrix Infinity clones out there, make sure you order from one of the reputable installers listed in this thread.
http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=chip_infinity

The Crystal Chip 1.1 is the latest contender to graduate to the top flight chip category. It is feature packed, simple to use, and effective. The CC auto patches DNA ID's so you'd never need to bother with Windip, Winimage, or Disc ID Insertor. Definitely recommended if you play your backups online alot. To boot backups/imports the Crystal Chip requires the use of "hacked" firmware. It's simply the official firmware modified so the chip can boot backups and imports. Everyone who uses the CC uses the hacked firmware, so fear not. The only feature that the CC doesn't share with the other two chips is support for cheat devices like ARMAX or Game Shark.
http://teammodders.com/ps2_mc.php?ex=2#31
CC 1.1 Hacked Firmware v.19: http://www.forumconsolas.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1213

I personally have a Matrix Infinity and it works great. I have no regrets as to getting a modchip over Swap Magic. Once you have a quality modchip, you'll never go back to disc swapping again. It cost's a little more in the short term, but think of all the time you'll save rebuilding, shrinking DVD-9 to DVD-5, patching PAL games to NTSC, and the like. If you haven't noticed, most people who have trouble getting games to boot are Swap Magic users. This isn't nearly as frequent a problem for people who have modchips. Just some food for thought.

Note: v.12 PS2's will need a laser fix like the neo fix. This is necessary to keep the laser from burning out.

From KC36330, a professional modder and member of AD:

If your modder didn't install a laser fix then most likely your laser is now on its way out. All V12 PS2's require the laser fix, especially modded consoles. Even a new unmodded slimline v. 12 PS2 can burn the laser out in as little as a few hours of game play.
Laser fix info: http://www.modchip.com/ps2/v12laserfix.htm

Also be wary of this if you have a v.9 or 10 PS2, you will require what is known as a "Romeo Mod."
From KCC36630:
It's not really a DMS related mod, it is a V9/10 laser issue and is often refereed to by modders as 'Version 9/10 syndrome.'

As is the V9/10 has 12v driving the LA chip which feeds the focus coils for the laser. When scratched or low quality media is used the LA chip will feed a voltage to the focus coils. Anywhere from 0-12v (in an unmodded setup) and this voltage can cause coil burn out, damage to the LA chip from overheating, and even cause the ribbon cable to the laser (coils) to deteriorate which can lead to them shorting together and taking out the LA chip all together. The 'Romeo Mod' removes the 12v feed to the LA chip and replaces it with 5v. this is done by lifting pin 17 on the LA chip completely off the PS2s motherboard and soldering a 30 awg wire to the lifted pin and attaching the wire to any 5v source on the mobo.

One of the first tests on a V9/10 (prior to modding) that i do is to check the coil resistance, it should be 4.5-5 Ω each.

26. Q. I'm in the market for a modchip or premodded console. What are some reputable sites I can order from?
A. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/251223 In addition http://www.modchip.com and http://www.norcalmods.com are supposed to be reliable. http://www.Xmodds.com is another quality mod site. If you're interested in a premod or modchip, be sure to order from one of these high quality sites.

Pardon my completely n00bness but I noticed in the very first post of this thread,
Quote:
best burns for PS2 games are ones with DVD+R booktype (AKA bitsetting) capabilities for setting DVD+R to dvd-rom for much better compatibility than dvd-r
I have an NEC DVD burner that can do DVD+R booktyping with a modified firmware flash. Does this mean I should flash my burner with this 3rd party mod firmware and use DVD+R media for quality PS2 backups? Or should I just stick with using my firmware as is and go with DVD-R media and no bitsetting. I'm using a PS2 slim with Swap Magic 3.6 and a flip-top. Just trying to decide which media to go with, DVD-R or DVD+R (Taiyo Yuden of course, thanks to this guide)?
