I personally use SM 3.8
Use the SM CD to boot Ulaunch CD, and use the SM DVD to boot up Ulaunch DVD.

so from what i've read *which is everything* you have to have swap magic to use the ulaunchelf?
also, all the ulaunchelf allows you to do is dl a game save and transfer it from a usb flash to you mem card.

am i getting this right?

You can also do other things with ULaunchelf. The version I have is 4.08 with the following added.

You can use the Independence Exploit to run elf files also, without having to use Swap Magic or a Modchip.

and the independent exploit is totally free?
do you have to have a "fat" ps2
a hdd?
if so, can it be a usb external hard drive?

The independence exploit is free, yes, but I read further on it and at first you would have to have access to a friends modded ps2 first, then after that it should work on your own.
Now that is using the tutorial link I gave you, its in the read me file. Also this tutorial I believe is for PS2 V11 and under, but on this site there is a tutorial for the exploit on a slimline PS2. And they work best for ide hard drives to my knowledge.

So otherwise yes, you are better off to have swap magic or a modded ps2 to do the game saves and a usb drive that is compatible with the PS2.

is there a difference in spead using ide verse usb? Yes there is quite a difference. There are many reasons to want an IDE Hard drive from being able to use homebrew application, emulators, audio and video media, backing up your game saves and what not. But the main reason why people would like to be able to utilize an HDD on their PS2Two is for the convenience of being able to back-up their PS2 games directly to the HDD and then be able to play the game directly from the HDD. Playing games from the HDD is very convenient in that the games will load fasted and wont freeze up do to poor quality discs. Not to mention you will have one large menu of games to pick from and won?t have to swap out your game disc every time you want to play a new game. Playing games from the HDD will also preserver your lasers life as it wont be being used when playing your games.
this "mod" if you will call it that, will allow me to play legal copied versions of games i have? Yes it will. Like I said read more in that post or do a search on this forum.

i just thought of something...when you say "modded" what do you exactly mean? covering the sensors on the ps2 to fool in it thinking the cover is closed when it's actually opened?

Yes that is one way, you can use the tape and tissue method or straw method for that, but you would still need Swap Magic then to be able to change disks.

crap...well that just sucks big time...i think i might up end just using swap magic to play my games...i dont have ar max or anything like that so i'd have to buy that along with SM. the only plus i see with this type of mod is being able to have all your games on a HD

Yes, it is really up to each individual with what way you want to mod your PS2, and what costs you want to spend.
There is nothing wrong with Swap Magic 3.8 Coder except it won't play dual layer DVD's, but you could just get it for now to play back ups and be able to use ULaunch elf then to transfer game saves, and then download the AR Max EVO which if you click my signature I have uploaded among other files. Down the road you can always pick up a IDE Hard drive as long as you have PS2 V12 and under. You can use Hdloader (which is free) to run games on it.

Yes thats correct. You can read one thread here on it and how to use it and here
also. I burn mine as a DVD because I mostly have DVD backups and it will work better.

I really can't comment on how safe it is or not, I read about the crackdown, but do not know who was raided. I would think you would want to purchase in your own country is all.
How to format you can read here, you will need to format as a FAT32 but first initialize and format as NTFS to take full advantage of the drive.
As for the make of your drive I am not sure if its compatible or not. I know some Maxtor,Western Digital, Seagate and I use a Samsung 300GB.
If you do a search on this forum you may find more info. Its a great site with lots of info on all your topics.

Click on my name to the left and you will find what you need on my rapidshare folder. There is also a link to a great guide that should give you all the info you need.
As for your drive if its already FAT32 then just leave it. You can leave your stuff on it if you like in a separate folder.
To put games on your USB drive, use USBextreme or Usbinsane. This thread here could help, and if you have any questions on that post them there.

How do you exactly transfer the game saves from computer to ps2?

Do you have to burn the game saves onto cd-r, or dvd+r and then from ps2 transfer to the MC?

Or can I use a usb stick? :)

Yes you can use your usb stick to put the game save folders on.
Just follow the guide in the first post of this thread, steps 1 - steps 9
Dan168 steps are exactly using a usb flash.
I always use mcpaste as he describes and works great for all game saves. You also need a way to boot the ulaunch cd, either by swap magic or modchip.

Does it matter if the save games are from codebreaker, max drive, shark port 2, or x-port save? If I use gamefaqs.com, which save file format do I want?

PS2 Savebuilder 0.8 supports AR Max, CodeBreaker, nPort, XPort, Sharkport, and more so it doesnt matter which one you get.
I usually first try to choose my region of PS2, then I usually get AR Max codes or Codebreaker, unless the save I really want is in another format.
If you have to choose another region the guide on the first page describes how to fix that also. YOu just need to know your own BASLUS-xxxxx to replace the region you had to download.
