After just installing the same router as darkflux, i had the problem of me forgetting to make the ip static, so when ever I reconnected all the good settings wouldnt match on the router config, i.e. both computers ip would change from xxx.xxx.xxx.101 to xxx.xxx.xxx.103, please dont think im being daft for mentioning this, coz it caught this newbie out, ohh that and the girlfriend not knowing there was a external wireless switch hidden on her lap to.....took hours to find that :s, thinking it was a router blocking problem......

Please I need someone's help really bad. I've been using emule 0.45b and emule plus 1.1 for a couple of months now. And I have always had the lowid thing. I've been doing everything I can. I have the XP firewall. I have disabled it. I dont beleive I have a router. My conection is cable and its a speed of 128 kilobytes. All those posts make me dizzy I barely understand a few words. About the servers I can connect to servers such as Razorback2 but as a lowid user. I'm tired of having very slow downloading connection. Please somebody help me. I would really appreciate that.

Okay, get this.

I use linksys BEFW11S4.

I have enabled triggering, forwarding, and UPNP, all of that stuff.

I also enabled DMZ.

I have disabled my firewall.

It does not work.

Now, at one point, I ran into trouble and had to go to "restore factory defaults". Which I didn't think would cause trouble. And now I figrued out that my DSL modem had a firewall on it too, so I set that on DMZ, and tried running Emule directly to a computer through the modem, and I got a high ID. So I set up triggering and forwarding and all that stuff again, but no, it wont work with my router.

Another thing, my UPNP wasn't enabling so I upgraded my firmware on the Router and that allowed it to enable and connect, but still It will not forward through the ports.

Also, I noticed this whole time my IP sometimes changes from; 192.168.1.100 to 101, 102, 102, 104, and 105. I assume that could pose a problem, but I dont see why it would give me a lowID now as my IP most definately is currently 102, and all my settings are at 102.

And just so everyone knows, I get the error when I try and test it with Emule and a LOWID, so It's not just a bad connection or anything.

As I see it, this has to be a router problem. What can I do?

EDIT: I made my IP address static, at 172, to see if it would help. But no it didn't. :-(

Sorry, for being troublesome but can some one help me,
i'm getting inconsistent downloads of 2kb/s=and i got a broadband of 100MBps...I've been downloading a movie for about a month and i've uploaded about 2 gigs of stuff and yet to even download 500mb. I'm at my wits end...

So here's my specifications:
I'm on a laptop on my home's wireless network. The router is the SparkLAN Turbo G 125MBps 2.4 router. There is no windows firewall on my laptop, no firewall, no nothing. But my main computer, a desktop, has norton antivirus firewall and window xp firewall activated. The main computer has the internet connection though a ADSL modem.

Okay, here's what I tried to do.
First, i switched off all the firewalls in the main computer and added in port forwarding for good measure. And also switched on port forwarding and port triggering for the router webpage.

Second, then i tried judoboy's suggestion of switching off the DMZ thing for my ip which is 192.168.1.102. It didn't do a thing. Then i went on to switch off the WAN thing which screens out stuff. It didn't remained as it was, blindfolds and all.

Thirdly, I was getting desperate so I went to look for the ports that Microsoft Spades use for connecting to the net and use the ip of those to connect. And Surprise!! It changed....for the worsse...my ip decreased....Then I changed it to 21 on the suggestion of one of the forum articles. Still cannot.

Okay, then I tried all the different IPs, like 192.168.1.2. which everyone says to use. By the way, 192.168.1.102 is the ip of the laptop on my DHCP server.OOps forgot to mention sometime, i disabled the ip setting on my wireless card for the laptop..dunno what it does but it kills my connection when it is enabled.

Okay, lets see, what now. Oh yar, I installed uPnP on both laptop and main computer too.

Thats it for now :D..i'm really sorry if i sound pissed becozz i am... thanks for reading though

ok

First, and formost, CHANGE YOUR ROUTER PASSWORD!!! Now that you posted the default password on the net you can have any number of hackers getting in to your system. ALWAYS change your default password.

Second, I have never liked Norton Security. I am a PC techie and support small businessess that had more network problems due to Norton Internet Security. Your Netgear router should have a built-in firewall but i'm only assuming b/c my 4yr old linksys has one built in. also, if running WinXP upgrade to SP2. The firewall is much better and easier to use and newer emule versions work with WinXP SP2 firewall.

You can keep static ip but if you are only running one pc on your net, DHCP will work too. Basically, if you have two or more PC's on your net and you reboot all your PC's at the same time your IP's can change between PC's.

Try using these instructions that have helped others with lowid.
***Keep in mind my instrustions are for Linksys router. Your netgear should be similar though.

This is a lengthy process. Please, be patient. You may want to print these instructions (copy/paste on notepad or something).

1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Click on Add/Remove Programs
3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components
4. Scroll down and click on Networking Services
5. Click the Details button
6. Check the box for: Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client
7. Check the box for: UPnP User Interface
8. Click OK then click Next***Note***You may be required to provide your Windows XP CD.
After this is complete Windows XP should automatically install a network Gateway in your Network Connections configuration.

1. Open emule and click the Preferences button on the Toolbar.
2. Click Connection
3. Change the TCP default Port to 4660.
4. Change the UDP default Port to 4670.
5. Click the button that says Open these ports on internal XP Firewall. (after clicking wait 2-5 seconds - this will confgure WinXP Firewall)
6. Click on the Test Ports Button to see if OK. But, if they don?t work it may only be because you have not fully configured everything yet.
7. Click OK at the bottom.

1. Login to your router
2. Go to your Netgear Port Forwarding page.
3. Remove any settings you have already entered.
3. Enter the following settings:
TCP 4660 To 4660 TCP 192.168.0.2 (your IP Address) Enable(checkbox)
UDP 4670 To 4670 UDP 192.168.0.2 (your IP Address) Enable(checkbox)
5. Click the Apply button
6. Logout of your router.
**Although, my router is capable of Port Triggering I don't have to use it. You shouldn't have to either. I would remove anysettings you entered.

If this doesn't work one more thing to try. Upgrade your Netgear Router Firmware (if newer one is available).

If this doesn't work trying uninstalling Norton Security. Again, your router should have firewall and with WinXP SP2 Firewall that's two layers of protection.

Let me know if this works for you.

hello.

I'm not sure that this is the topic where i should write this, but i haven't found any place else :S

I have a linksys befw11s4 V4 with the latest firmware (1.50.0.14) and i can get a high Id, but, after a while, 5 or 6min i lose connection with the server.
I have configure the router as i should, and as explained several times here, i have 44 downloading files, and the win Xp pro Sp2 well configured.
what could be the problem???

There is a very important element that I haven't seen anyone mention that causes lowid. This element is norton worm protection. If you have norton worm protection enable it acts like a firewall for peer-to-peer applications.Make sure that norton worm protection is disabled after you set your router and firewall up otherwise you will still receive a lowid.

<<Punisher1>>
Your instructions are perfect and fixed my lowid problem immediately. My config is a Linksys router, Win XP Sp2, and eMule .45b

I don't know much about networks and was concerned about opening up the ports 4660 and 4670. I do have Windows Firewall on, excluded the emule program and added the two ports.

Can you confirm that I have not opened my system up and is still secure? Any files that I download through these ports still get McAfee VirusScan checking to make sure any files being accessed/run are clean.

Is port forwarding basically a way to direct specific incoming network traffic from the internet to a specific machine on my LAN running the stated program that I deem "trusted"? If so I can see how ports kind of work as other common ports are then associated to handle specific data like HTTP web traffic.

Thanks again.

hey windtrade,

Thanks for the input. As always, I'm always concerned with opening ports that can leave my system vulnerable. Unfortunately, its probably always going to be a risk you take. In this case its, "how bad do i want a highid". Even emule has it's own (default) ports that can provide access to your system. What I do is the best I can do and that is keep my pc behind the Router firewall and run Winxp SP2 Firewall. You can take other steps like running Zonealarm (i have not tested with highid). Zonealarm could provide a 3rd layer of protection.

***i do not recommend Norton Internet Security.***

Keep your Router Firmware Up-To-Date.

Continue to install Critical Updates for WinXP from Microsoft. I know people criticize MS and Winxp and SP2 - Firewall, but, it is better than the original Firewall was in the first release of WinXP.

My policy is, No system is hack-proof. That?s true even for the cooperate world. Look how someone hacked into T-Mobile and got a hold of Paris Hilton's Cell info. This mentality keeps me on my toes. I constantly remind myself to continue to improve my security.

I cannot confirm yours or any other's system is secure.

It also depends on passwords. Have you changed your router default password? You would be surprised for the ones that don?t. Change the name of your default WinXP Workgroup. The default for your network workgroup is - "Workgroup". Change it to something else. (if you change the workgroup name it should not impact your emule highid settings. Are you sharing any drives, folders or files? Shares can act as open doors. You can hide a share by adding a $ behind the name of a share, ie., temp_share$

You are correct on port forwarding. you are simply telling your router to ONLY allow traffic on a specific port to pass through to and from a specific pc with the specific IP address. No other pc's on your network will be allowed to receive/send that same traffic unless you otherwise configure it. If you have a spare pc you don't use much, use it for emule and not your good system.

hope this helps.

>> "how bad do i want a highid". <<
So far it does not seem to makes things much faster. I am new to this so I don't have much experience to reference but I am not getting very fast downloads even with highid. I think it may be the low number of sources. I only come to eMule when I can't get stuff from my premium usenet account.

I'll look into ZoneAlarm and see if it adds much security.

I do keep up-to-date on router and OS critical updates.

Nothing in my system uses defaults, user or account ids, passwords, workgroup id, SSId, etc.

I do use shares on my networked PCs. I'll decide if hiding the share is worth the added hassle of trying to remember them.

If I had a spare PC for this use, wouldn't it be easier and more secure to put it in the DMZ and set up the eMule directories there?

hey windtrade,

sounds like you're doing everything right. i too have been disappointed with downloading from emule even with highid. seems like my uploads speed by far out-pace any download speeds (some things are fast but not much).

As for a spare pc. putting any pc in the DMZ is deemed, well, doomed. if you leave a pc in the DMZ it is more vulnerable than ever. anyone can browse directly to that pc's ip address. that pc and any and all downloads are extremely vulnerable. someone can take control of Windows too. Basically, a pc in the DMZ is NOT Secure.

what i would do is use the spare pc (behing the firewall) running WinXP SP2. have emule and ports configured just like the way your emule pc is running now. only use it to download/upload for emule and/or usenet. once you have fully downloaded then burn, move or copy to other pc. putting the pc in the DMZ isn't any easier now that you know how to configure emule for highid. plus, its more protected.

I've not heard of usenet. can you tell me more? can anyone sign on like you can on emule?

Thanks.

I understand about the PC in the DMZ. That makes sense about having the spare PC to handle just eMule/Usenet file transfers and then copy them off that PC.

Don't know about Usenet? That's great! kidding.. it really is the original internet message and file exchange method and once WWW came along it quickly became obsure and viewed as arcane.

Some ISP have full support of Usenet groups but many control the binaries. There are services that provide full support for all usenet groups and very fast download speeds. Not free of course. Here's a couple of links - any other questions PM me.

I got same problem with Emule, and have typed 192.168.1.1 and it could not be found, then took 192.168.0.1 and it worked to the password screen. But no admin or so worked for password.
So can anyone help ???

-- I took 192.168.0.1 because ipconfig says this is my Gateway.

Punisher1, I wish to thank you for your help, I have been unable to get emule working for quite some time since I changed my computer but thanks to your tutorial I am back up and running.

To celebrate I will be leaving my computer running for the next 48 hours so people can download all the dibert episodes they want... they seem to be very popular :)

hello.

i've had a low id problem for a while, never had time to attend it.

now.
I just got a belkin 54mbps router, and appearantly can not connect to the server at all (trying to connect to razorback 2 (195.245.244.243:4661), it gives me the warning about low id, and then says that it's full (as it happens 10 times out of 10 tries, i think that time has come to improve id...) i am able to connect to other servers (but, i want razorback!)

So.

I have read most of all 11 pages of this topic. tried few things. basically it boils down to this:

-The router has the ports forwarded.
-Kerio has the ports for emule open.
-computer is pretty much always on, and i only have 2 machines in the network, so i don't think i really need to make ip static.

When in emule options i try to "test ports" the TCP test is failing. So, something somewhere is not going through... any ideas? please?

thanks for any input

oh and by the way, i am on wireless connection, if it makes any difference (which it shouldn't, as far as i understand (damn comcast, they won't let me have several wire-connected machines on one cable any more))

Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop.
Your normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side. This is wrong.
It arouses contempt in the cop-heart. Make the bastard chase you. He will follow.

Hello, i've read most of the thread.
SO i am with the same problem - failing connection tests.
I use windows firewall, did enable the ports throught the emule button.
Then tried the router and did something like this

Same pic - http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/xtc7777777/Screen02.jpg

SO if anybody could help and tell me what did i put wrong in the router config. Or can i even enable the ports in my router, or should i get a new one, like some D-Link one.

Thank you all very much in advance!!

Hi,

first and foremost I would like to thank everyone participating to this very helpfull thread. I had been struggling for months with a lowID problem that I finally got rid off todat!

But alas, even though I have the long sought highID status, my download rates (and upload) remain ridiculously low...

Could anyone give me some hints to investigate?

I have a 512kb ADSL connection, default emule ports correctly forwarded, static IP (10.0.0.250). I use Zone Alarm.
I am completely lost, I thought solving this ID issue would be the end of my problems!!
thanks to anyone who will take the time to make a suggestion.
