Check both your windows firewall and router firewall are configured. If i turn my router off for some reason it loses my saved settings!

sammorris,
try upgrading your firmware to a newer version. unplugging your router should never delete your saved settings.

I know this is a stupid question but one i have to ask. when you make changes in your router are you clicking the save or save settings (depending on your type of router) button?

That's the only thing i can possibly think of b/c in theory it could keep the settings in memory until its unplugged. Just thought i would ask. don't be offened please.

Maybe your ROM in the router is bad too.
A simple Flash upgrade may fix.

later.

bplantman,

Do you have any other type of Firewall such as zone alarm? Zone Alarm seems to be a good product but could be causing lowid problems. If you are running it try uninstalling and see if that fixes.

Are you running Norton (piece of sh*t) internet security? If so, i would uninstall and watch your pc speed up. I used to be Pro-Norton but over the last couple of years or so i have removed Norton products of user's computers and could literally see a HUGE difference in performance increase. I've had problems with Norton Antivirus where it interferes with things like MS Word 2002 and 2003. After removal, problem is gone. hmmm. I would recommend something like McAfee.

For now i would just use WinXP Firewall and your router NAT firewall. Did you see my previous posting on how to setup WinXP, Router and emule for highID?

Oh, yeah. Upgrade your Router Firmware. Believe it or not, this could be a fix if your router is dropping packets or connections. The drop and reconnect could be so fast you wouldn't know it but your computer will.

let me know.

Need some help as well, been using emule for years with no trouble and high speeds. had to replace ntl broadband modem due to failure of old unit now emule will only connect with lowid. also, enabling the udp port kills my connection completely. tried port forwarding etc but nothing on the machine has changed apart from the modem. no router involved. speed tests show everything fine. winxp sp2 fully updated. no zone alarm, firewall sorted.
any suggestions very welcome

bourbon,

i have heard rumors that some isp's block specific ports. i wonder if your new modem (newer technology) more easily transmits data regarding what ports you are forwarding or info that is going in and out of your pc. the block could be coming from your isp that your older modem may not have been able to detect or transmit. i realize it seems a little far-fetched but its an idea.

i might suggest purchasing a router. this may block information getting out to your isp. plus, it is another layer of firewall protection. most everyone i know on high speed has a router b/c it can and does several things that are beneficial such as: Network many ( i think its up to around 300) pc's and share the same internet connection, firewall, mask your IP address (probably the most important), Port forwarding, deny specific pc's access to the internet or your network and keep your computer(s) connected to the interent at all times without having to click on an extra icon to connect.

just a simple fyi.

bourban,

i don't think you can change the modem settings but you never know. i noticed you are using port 5661. did you have a chance to read my fix on page 13? if you don't want to use a router i would still try my fix and ignore STEP4 (Rourter config) (notice the ports i use).

I will repost my fix again here.
THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS PART OF THE INSTRUCTIONS IS IF YOU ARE USING A ROUTER. I STRONGLY ADIVSE YOU USE A ROUTER.

Your Router should have a Firewall built into it. I am allowing WinXP w/SP2 (Firewall turned on) to run DHCP with Linksys Router (you can w/static ip). If using a Linksys then I think I can help. If you are running anyting other than a Linksys Router I believe you can still use this b/c the settings are basically the same. This is kind of long but if you complete I think you will be happy.

This is a lengthy process. Please, be patient. You may want to print these instructions (copy/paste on notepad or something).

*Before you begin i would change everything you changed back to default. Otherwise, my change could conflict with your change.

STEP1
1. Open emule and click the Preferences button on the Toolbar.
2. Click Connection
3. Change the TCP default Port to 4660.
4. Change the UDP default Port to 4670.
5. You Can click on the Test Ports Button to see if OK. But, if they don?t work it may only be because you have not fully configured everything yet.
6. Click the button that says Open these ports on Internal XP Firewall
7. Click OK at the bottom.

STEP2
This next step works in conjunction with a router. I have not tried this on any other router. If you are using a router, other than a Linksys router, I would do this next step anyway.
1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Click on Add/Remove Programs
3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components
4. Scroll down and click on Networking Services
5. Click the Details button
6. Check the box for: Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client
7. Check the box for: UPnP User Interface
8. Click OK then click Next***Note***You may be required to provide your Windows XP CD.
After this is complete Windows XP should automatically install a network Gateway in your Network Connections configuration.

STEP3
If you are running Windows XP SP2 you need to do the following. If you are not running SP2 then you can skip this next step.
1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Click Windows Firewall
3. Click the Exceptions tab
4. Click the Add Programs button, Scroll down and select Emule. ***If emule is not listed then browse to: C:\Program Files\emule\emule.exe and select emule.exe.
5. Click OK
6. Click Add Port. For the name put Emule TCP and enter the Port 4660. Make sure TCP is selected.
7. Click Add Port. For the name put Emule UDP and enter the Port 4670. Make sure UDP is selected.
8. Close out of the Control Panel.

STEP4
This next step should work for most routers. If non-Linksys you simply need to navigate to find your config fields. This step in particular is defined from a Linksys Router.
1. Go to a command prompt and type: IPCONFIG write down or note your IP Address.
2. Login to your router
3. If Linksys click on the Advanced tab
4. Next click on the Forwarding tab
5. Enter the following settings:
TCP 4660 To 4660 TCP 192.168.1.XXX (your IP Address) Enable(checkbox)
UDP 4670 To 4670 UDP 192.168.1.XXX (your IP Address) Enable(checkbox)
6. Click the Apply button
7. Logout of your router.

That?s It your done.
Open emule and see if you can connect at HighID.
If you still do not connect it may be because you are using a different router. Remember, I?m using a Linksys router but I think the settings are basically the same.

Despite what others write regarding my fix, remember, not all systems are the same. You have to find what works for your system. It works for me and for other?s I?ve helped.
Sorry, if this was not a help.

**Important: No matter what you do NEVER compromise the security of your system. I would NEVER recommend turning off your Firewall(s) to get a HighID for long term use. One exception to turning off a Firewall would be to do a simple test to see if a Firewall is causing the problem. Turn the Firewall back ON as soon as you run your test. If a Firewall is the problem you need to configure Ports to allow access through the Firewall.

***If you have not Changed your Router Default Password - DO SO!!! Never use a default password!!!

****If this fix still does not help upgrade your Router Firmware. NOTE: A Firmware upgrade usually resets the Router back to the default settings and resets the password back to default too. if a firmware upgrade resets your settings you will need to redo STEP4 and again change the default password.

Hope this helps.
Let me know if I you have any questions and feedback is welcome.

tried all of the above with no change.

have now installed edonkey2000. seems to be working - getting speeds of 25-30KB/s much better than 1 or 2.

it must be something to do with the way emule is using the connection - next time there an update i'll try it again.
many thanks for your help

Hi guys, I read all the entire posts just fast and see if I could do something else to get a High ID but I am getting a low id, still trying to open the ports, I did it on setup of my router but it does not work, I do not know what I am doing wrong
I have

Qwest Dsl modem
Actiontec GT701-GW
with wireless gateway

I am using it through wireless
I am using windows xp sp2
I am using emule 0.46c

there is a funny thing I have T1 at the office and I entered to the website configurator for the T1 service provider and I forwarded those ports and it worked so fine, but I have static i.p there for each computer. with qwest dsl I believe it is dinamic, it does not matter at this time because I checked from ms dos prompt with ipconfig /all and I get the i.p. address from there and copy and paste to the DSL administration router properties with the ports forwarded 4662 TCP and 4672 for UDP but not work, still I get from emule that I have a lod id even when I make the test on emule

so I do not have problems of software firewall because I have windows xp sp2 firewall up and emule works so fine at office with high id on this computer.

on the test that I do with emule Options --> Connection and I select test ports

I get this
----------------------------------------------
Please wait while the ports of your eMule are being tested...

Testing IP: 67-XX-XXX-XX.XXXX.qwest.net (67.XX.XXX.XX)

Starting TCP connection test...
TCP test failed! UDP test will not be performed.

Connection test finished.
------------------------------------------------
so what do you think guys I am doing wrong ? what can I do fix with this problem, anyone using qwest service and this kind of dsl router ?

I will appreciate on advance your answers, this is annoying that I can not get high id at home
thanks

ray,

i noticed two things you need to check. first, i noticed you are using TCP port 4662 and UDP port 4672. If you read my fix right about your posting notice the ports I use are TCP 4660 & UDP 4670. Using my fix you need to change the ports in to be EXATCLY the same in STEP 1,3 & 4. All the ports have to match.

Second, your ip address ends in xxx.xxx.xxx.3 I know you are running DHCP so that tells me you have more than 1 computer on your network. Here's the thing. If you were to reboot both or all computers at the same time or lets say the other computer is turned off and your bring your computer up your ip address will no longer be 192.168.0.3 it will be 192.168.0.2. thats what DHCP does. It dynamically assigns the next available address to whichever computer grabs it first. then when you bring the other computer(s) online it will grab 192.168.0.3 and 192.168.0.4 and so on. Assuming your router is using 192.168.0.1.

this is important b/c if you set up port forwarding either in winxp or your router then your ports could be forwarded to the wrong computer. what i mean is if you set up port forwarding to 192.168.0.3 (your computer) and you reboot both or all your pc's on your net. then when your computer comes back online it could have a different ip address i.e., 192.168.0.2. well, your ports are forwarded to xxx.xxx.xxx.3. this means your router is trying to forward TCP/UDP traffic to another pc on your net.

this is where static ip's are probably a better idea if you have more than on PC on your net.

the other option is to set up your router to forward TCP/UDP traffic to all ip address on your net but thats a bigger security hole and i would NOT recommend it.

I would retry my fix above step by step and remember how your IP address is very important.

Hope this made sense.

let me know.

well, after several months on the phone with tech "experts" from my ISP, after discerning that the problem had NOTHING to do with my settings, but that the problem was on their end, i finally got to speak with a NEW employee, who promptly informed me that they not only limit the download speed of my eMule, KaZaA, and Soulseek (after everyone else who works there swore otherwise), but also that of BitTorrent and other such services, which happen to have MANY proven legal uses as well. when further questioned about the nature and/or reason for the speed-cap, she replied calmly that they've "had problems with people using up the company's bandwidth on such programs", and (here's the clincher) "anyway, there are no guarantees speed-wise in your contract." !!!! what do these people think broadband is for, "hi-speed e-mail checking"? now, keep in mind, while their speeds aren't the fastest anywhere, they're by no means "slow" broadband. on average i get 1500k and up speeds on IE (i can download a 5 MB song on IE in about 10 seconds), and can't get higher than 25k in eMule (10.5k max per file)! and the town my ISP serves has a mere 1500 people, less than 1/3 of which own PC's, not to mention that 1/2 the town is retired old folks...

my point is, if you've tried everything in this guide [especially punisher1's guide :) ], and are still getting lowID, you should have a nice long chat with your ISP about things. you should also check out http://www.auditmypc.com/freescan/scanoptions.asp to test your firewall to be sure your settings are right. and for God's sake, if you live in Northern Indiana, in the U.S., and have Rochester Telephone Company as an option, look for somebody/anybody else ;)

i'd like to thank all the people who've contributed to this thread and made it the best one i've found yet on the net, and a special thanx to punisher1 for all his PM's!

i guess i'll wait til my cable co. rolls out their hi-speed and try them. peace all ;)

Hi,

I have been running emule fine with no lowid probs, I set-up all the ports/firewalls etc. But today I cannot connect without having the Lowid problem.

All settings are still correct and my IP address is still the same.

I installed Spyware Doctor yesterday - but I have uninstalled this just in case that was the problem - but still Low-id

I updated my Avast Registration - but settings are still the same and it is set for Emule. I switched it off - still low-id

Did a system restore - Still low-id

Checked System registry - nothing obvious there.

Anyone with any ideas

wow! i don't know what to say. thanks darkflux.

b-t-w, darkflux is correct about ISP's blocking. i have heard the same regarding ISP's blocking to prevent us(the cusomters who pay for a service) from using their precious bandwidth.
ultimately, its probably going to be in the hands of the ISP's to allow speed across their lines. however, that doesn't mean ever-changing technology won't provide a way around. i wish we had more broadband competition too.

if i learn of some new method(s) i will be sure to let everyone know.

thanks,

Hello, everyone. I too experienced the low-ID problem in eMule. I am using the D-Link DI-624 (revised version C) router. I ultimately managed to resolve the issue, thanks to the advice of judoboy and nojive. Here's what I did:

1. I looked up my own IP-adress by entering "ipconfig" in the run screen (start > run). As I am connected to the internet by means of an ethernet connection (with cable) and a wireless connection, I saw two IP-adresses.

3. I located the configuration screen of my router, by entering http://192.168.0.1/ (this code is different for each router, and can be found in your instruction booklet). Then, I upgraded the firmware of my router, because I saw that the new firmware version included a correction for "an eMule disconnection bug".

3. Then, still in the configuration screen of the router, I selected the function DMZ (Demilitarized Zone), and entered the IP-adress of my ethernet connection (and not of my wireless connection).

Now, everytime I use eMule, I switch my wireless connection off, and my ethernet connection on. So I only use the demilitarized connection when eMule is running. When eMule isn't running anymore, I switch back to my safe wireless connection. The other option I propose is to disconnect your pc from your router, and to directly plug it into the modem everytime you're using eMule. I realize these two options might not be the most practical, but I find it difficult to forward ports and to create static IP-adresses.

I hope this post can help some of you, because it was a pickle for me too. I still have a question though, do you think that this method is safe? A reply would be appreciated! Thanks!

restafval,

yes, you can put your computer(s) in the DMZ. we've said that from the beginning. and, i always advised to use the DMZ for test only.

you can probably resolve LOWID problems from the DMZ, however, we need to advise everyone how RISKY it is.

downloading can take hours and sometimes days. even minutes could be enough time for your computer(s) to be hacked, infiltrated, etc.

i post this only to inform everyone.

i, respectfully, thank restafval for the update.

thanks.

have you cheked out my fix i posted on page 14- Dated August 4, 2005 @ 14:20?

I know port forwarding can be a little intimidating but i think if you try my fix you will be happy. my instructions are (nearly) literally step-by-step.

if you can't find the post let me know and i will either re-post or send to you.

thanks.
