Thank you, Punisher, for your reply. Still, I would like to ask: isn't using the DMZ function like not using a router? When a computer is directly linked to the modem, can we say that that computer is running in a Demilitarized Router? My question is: what's the difference between using a router in DMZ-mode and not using a router at all?

... a woman is as faithful as her options ...

Sorry to jump in but running in DMZ mode is basically like being directly connected to the modem except you can have several computers connected. DMZ is the last ditch option to make a connection when all else fails and you have to make the connection or if you are trying to eliminate the router as the cause of a connection problem. Leaving your router in DMZ mode with no software firewall is asking for trouble.

pretty much what clifjcb said.

also, for some ISP's you have to load thier software that requires you to make a connection similar to a dial-up connection. with a router you're always connected. with a router you don't have to use ISP software. just open the browser and your there.

a router masks your ip address meaning your computer's IP Address doesn't get broadcast all across the internet universe. if i can ping your ip address i can probably hack my way into your pc especially if you do not have a firewall(s).

btw what is your IP address?

just kidding.

i can connect with HIGHID and have few layers of protection to hopefully keep hackers out.
1. Router with NAT firewall (behind the DMZ)
2. WindowsXP SP2 (firewall turned on)
3. All WindowsXP updates (especailly the Critical updates)
4. Change the (default) Workgroup to something other than the defaults. I think Windows should require you to change and/or force you to come up with your own Workgroup name. The two defaults that i know are a. WORKGROUP and b. MSHOME. If your Workgroup is either one of these i would recommned you change it. Make up your own and don't use words like HOME and NETWORK, etc. Remember if you have more than one pc on your net change all Workgroups. they should be the same (easier to manage) but don't have to be the same Workgroup to share the same network.
5. Remove or hide all Shares.
6. Update your Router's Firmware

i only recommend the DMZ for test only. if you can get HIGHID in the DMZ then you probably do not have your ports forwareded properly in both Windows and/or the Router.

Again, try my fix on page 14 @ 14:20. Notice i'm using different emule ports and NOT the default ports.

thanks.

I now have the problem I had before:

Router is set up fine according to those instructions, and suddenly eMule gives me a low id.

However, a problem with emule ive noticed is that after a while, LowIDs seem unavoidable until I reinstall windows...

Presumably something in emule bans me from having a high ID if i've done something wrong (don't know what though).

sammorris, did you upgrade emule? maybe a recent upgrade may have caused these new lowid issues.

do you remember when you last had highid?
maybe try a WindowsXP restore a day prior or something.

a) No, nothing from emule has changed except my DNS address (which i tried changing back and that didnt solve the problem)

b) unfortunately not possible, a lot has gone on in the past few weeks relating to installs and such - i couldn't go back and lose all that.

I have the same problem: High ID, router set according to instructions, with both desktop and laptop ports open. All of a sudden, Low ID. The only thing I can remember doing was erasing some of the files I had downloaded because I had no more memory left in the computer.

What can I do??????? Please help!!!!!

If your port is 'unreachable' try changing the port emule uses in the settings page and adjust your router accordingly. Oh, and check your router works first. Mine stopped working, it's going back next week...

oh well ... hi guys..
first, it's great to see that these foruns can be so helpful, thanks all =)

but.. my problem is.. I've read all I found and I know Google is my friend and things like that, but, no matter what, I can't connect to my router! 10.0.0.1:2003 192.168.1.1 telnet whatever, I just can't. Dunno if it's something to do with my thumbs or my blue glasses (sometimes lens..) but the fact is..I can't. I read all the help u guys posted here and I proceded as u said (when it aplied to me..) (btw, I'm Portuguese so sorry if this doesn't make sense =/ )

hmm.. my router is a Zyxel Prestige 642R-13
I have ADSL 512d/l
My router is connected to another wireless router that provides internet for two other computers.
I have eMule and obviously I only get lowID =( this sucks...
I have unlimited downloads per month but I STILL would apreciate it very much if they occured at a faster pace!
Firewall or no Firewall, configured ZoneAlarm or Disabled Windows Firewall, I've tried it. Whenever I input my gateway's IP into the browser, it says connection refused.
I even tried connecting by ftp(?) [no, I'm no geek, I'm just plain curious(kinda average guy, really] and did a little of everything I found over the net..)
so... I wanted to port.forward those eMule ports..
I can't..
..
..
..
anything else U guys need to know to help me? please let me know..

thanks in advance.. =)

hi, all. been a while since i've replied - SORRY been real busy. looks like the steps i posted may not be working for some. remember some of it may be due to your ISP blocking ports - Yes, some ISP's block ports.

I just rebuilt my computer and then just today i installed EMULE (fresh) using my instructions and had absolultey NO problems connecting at HIGHID.

however, i did make a couple of changes in the instructions. i'm reposting my new instructions for those who want to give it another shot.

good luck...
This is a lengthy process. Please, be patient. You may want to PRINT THESE INSTRUCTOINS:
1. Open emule and click the Options button on the Toolbar.
2. Click Connection
3. Change the TCP default Port to 4660.
4. Change the UDP default Port to 4670.
5. Click Apply.
6. Click the Test Ports Button. A window will open and display both ports tested successfully. But, if they don?t work it may only be because you have not fully configured everything yet.
7. Click the button that says Open these ports on internal WinXP Firewall. Wait for the confirmation window that will pop up and then click OK.
8. Click OK at the bottom.
9. Close eMule.

This next step works in conjunction with a Linksys router. I have not tried this on any other router. If you are using a router, other than a Linksys router, I would do this next step anyway.
1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Click on Add/Remove Programs
3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components
4. Scroll down and click on Networking Services
5. Click the Details button
6. Check the box for: Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client (this option may already be checked).
7. Check the box for: UPnP User Interface
8. Click OK then click Next***Note***You may be required to provide your Windows XP CD.
9. Click Finish.
10. Close the Add/Remove and Control Panel Windows.

If you are running Windows XP SP2 you need to do the following. If you are not running SP2 then you can skip this next step.
1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Click Windows Firewall
3. Click the Exceptions tab
4. Click the Add Programs button, Scroll down and select Emule. ***If emule is not listed then browse to: C:\Program Files\emule\emule.exe and select emule.exe.
5. Click OK
6. Click Add Port. For the name put Emule TCP and enter the Port 4660. Make sure TCP is selected.
7. Click Add Port. For the name put Emule UDP and enter the Port 4670. Make sure UDP is selected.
8. Now click on the Advanced Tab (next to the Exceptions tab).
9. Under the section: Network Connection Settings, Click the Settings button.
10. Check the list to see if you have two entries for eMule TCP and/or UDP if not then proceed to next step (step 11). Remember, only do this step if neither TCP or UDP entries are in the list. If there are two entries in the list click the TCP option and edit it. Enter either the name or the IP Address of your computer. (If you are using more than one computer on your router you may want to use the name of your computer because your IP Addresses could change between other PC?s on your network during reboots).
For the TCP option make sure Port 4660 is entered for both internal and external.
Now Click the UDP option and edit it. Enter the same you entered for your TCP (computer name or IP Address) and ensure Port 4670 is entered for both internal and external. Skip to step 20.
11. Click the Add button (only do this step if there are no TCP or UDP entries in the list).
12. In the Description of Service enter: emule TCP Ports
13. On the next line enter either the name of your computer or your IP Address (If you are using more than one computer on your router you may want to use the name of your computer because your IP Addresses could change between the other PC?s on your network during reboots).
14. For both Ports (internal and external) entries use 4660, make sure TCP is selected
15. Click OK
16. Click the Add button again
17. In the Description of Service enter: emule UDP Ports
18. On the next line enter either the name of your computer or your IP Address
19. For both Ports (internal and external) entries use 4670, make sure UDP is selected
20. Click the OK buttons to exit out
21. Close out of the Control Panel

This next step works in conjunction with a Linksys router. I have not tried this on any other router. If you are using a router, other than a Linksys router, I would attempt do this next step anyway. If you do not this probably will NOT work.
1. Go to a command prompt and type: IPCONFIG write down or note your IP Address.
2. Login to your router
3. If Linksys click on the Advanced tab
4. Next click on the Forwarding tab
5. Enter the following settings:
TCP 4660 To 4660 TCP 192.168.1.XXX (your IP Address) Enable(checkbox)
UDP 4670 To 4670 UDP 192.168.1.XXX (your IP Address) Enable(checkbox)
If you have more than one computer on your network you can repeat step 5 and enter a second IP address. Here is an example how your router could look if you have more than on computer on your router. This way if your computer?s IP Address changed from .100 to .101 on the next reboot it would matter because you have it configured in the router too.
TCP 4660 TO 4660 TCP 192.168.1.100
UDP 4670 TO 4670 UDP 192.168.1.100
TCP 4660 TO 4660 TCP 192.168.1.101
UDP 4670 TO 4670 TCP 192.168.1.101
6. Click the Apply button
7. Logout of your router.

After this is complete Windows XP should automatically install a network Gateway in your Network Connections configuration.

That?s It your done.
Open emule and see if you can connect at HighID.
If you still do not connect it may be because you are using a different router. Remember, I?m using a Linksys router but I think the settings are basically the same.

Despite what others write regarding my fix, remember, not all systems are the same. You have to find what works for your system. It works for me and for other?s I?ve helped.
Sorry, if this was not a help.

***Important: No matter what you do NEVER compromise the security of your system. I would NEVER recommend turning off your Firewall(s) to get a HighID for long term use. One exception to turning off a Firewall would be to do a simple test to see if a Firewall is causing the problem. Turn the Firewall back ON as soon as you run your test. If a Firewall is the problem you need to configure Ports to allow access through the Firewall.

Hope this helps.
Let me know if I you have any questions and feedback is welcome.

I can't connect to the router (Zyxel Prestige 642R-13).. I've read the manual and searched trought the net.. =/
that's just my problem..

2. Login to your router
I know this is so simple and that's why it only takes one line to instruct it, but I can't =| I don't know what to do..

woop,
are you saying you are unable to login to your router, or that you don't know how?
if the latter is the case, to login to your router, you need it's IP Address: Click on "Start > Run..." and type "command" , and at the command prompt type "ipconfig" (in WinXP). the number next to "Default Gateway" is your router's IP. now open an Internet Explorer window, and type the IP in the Address Bar at the top. reference your manual for the default password, etc.
that's how it's done with Linksys Routers, yours may differ slightly.
oh, by the way, when dealing with a DSL (in your case "ADSL") connection, you must set up the routing for the Router as well as the modem; from the PC to the modem to the router, setting up the modem on your PC first, then the connection between the modem and your router. hope this makes sense.

thanks! it feels really good having feedback from you all! =)

I know how to connect to the router.. as I said, I enter 192.168.1.1 in the browser and it says connection refused(firefox) or "The page cannot be displayed"(InternetExplorer)
I saw somewhere that I should try 10.0.0.something:2033 but it came out the same error.

"oh, by the way, when dealing with a DSL (in your case "ADSL") connection, you must set up the routing for the Router as well as the modem; from the PC to the modem to the router, setting up the modem on your PC first, then the connection between the modem and your router. hope this makes sense."
hmm... I'm not sure if I understand this.. it means I must configure the modem as well? so that it goes like this(when downloading with eMule):
source ==> Modem-port-forwarding-to ==> Router-portforwarding-to ==> my PC
???

woop, what about reseting your router. on the back of my linksys there is a reset button. I have had to reset it before. Remember, when you reset it all settings are set back to default. So, if you have ever logged into your router before and changed the default password after a reset the password will go back to default. Just make sure you change the default password again after a reset.

NEVER leave the default password as the password to your router. that would be too easy for a hacker to log in.

Also, try updating your router's firmware.

i googled your model router Zyxel Prestige 642R-13 but looks like most is written in Portuguese or some other language. Another thing you could do is call Zyxel. I found their tel# 902-33.22.66

if I reset the router it means I'll lose my internet? does it require any special configuration from my ISP to get it back to work ..? I mean... will it work normally after I reset it, or do I need to configure something? thanks for the phone# ;)

sometime ago(about one year or something..) I updated the firware..do I need to it again? ..nvm, I'll search the Zyxels site for an update ..

what i meant was, when dealing with a DSL modem, you should set it up with your computer first, to be sure it's not the modem causing access problems (you can get internet thru your modem without the router, right?), and once that's certified working, then set it up with your router.

also, (with the exception of some DSL modems) be sure you have your IP Address for the modem handy when setting up the router. when you set emule up using a DSL or Cable modem, there are usually 3 sets of IP Addresses to remember: one (or more) for the PC(s), one for the router, and one for the modem. when you set up a router WITHOUT an (A)DSL/Cable modem, usually you just set it up to receive the internet signal. but with a modem involved, there is an extra step, that's all.
there are exceptions to that rule, however, as some ISP's use modems that simply receive and send the signal without requiring setup using IP Address, but this varies amongst ISPs, so i'm not sure which yours is.
also, much like punisher1 mentioned resetting your router, your modem can also be reset, if this becomes an issue...

also, you shouldknow that i don't know too much about ADSL, just plain old DSL, so if there's a significant difference in setup, please let me know...
anyways, i'm happy to help in whatever small way i can :)

oh, punisher, didn't know if you're still interested, but i found a page for the English version of woop's ADSL router:
http://www.libellules.ch/zyxel642.php
look for the files that say "anglais" (Portugese for English). google should be able to translate the web page if you still have trouble finding the file. enjoy!

Busted!!!

Lol, and on a serious note, all that differs for ADSL vs. DSL (or sometimes known as SDSL) is that the upload speed is lower than the download speed. Not complicated. I don't think there are many differences with IP addresses, that probably varies more with each ISP.
