i've never had good luck with emule default ports. i changed the TCP/UDP ports and have success ever since. here are step-by-step instructions i've come up with that works for me everytime and others as well. i would try at least on one of your computers preferrebly your LAN PC to rule-out wireless issues. let me know.

This is a lengthy process. Please, be patient. You may want to PRINT THESE INSTRUCTOINS:
1. Open emule and click the Options button on the Toolbar.
2. Click Connection
3. Change the TCP default Port to 4660.
4. Change the UDP default Port to 4670.
5. Click Apply.
6. Click the Test Ports Button. A window will open and display both ports tested successfully. But, if they don?t work it may only be because you have not fully configured everything yet.
7. Click the button that says Open these ports on internal WinXP Firewall. Wait for the confirmation window that will pop up and then click OK.
8. Click OK at the bottom.
9. Close eMule.

This next step works in conjunction with a Linksys router. I have not tried this on any other router. If you are using a router, other than a Linksys router, I would do this next step anyway.
1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Click on Add/Remove Programs
3. Click Add/Remove Windows Components
4. Scroll down and click on Networking Services
5. Click the Details button
6. Check the box for: Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client (this option may already be checked).
7. Check the box for: UPnP User Interface
8. Click OK then click Next***Note***You may be required to provide your Windows XP CD.
9. Click Finish.
10. Close the Add/Remove and Control Panel Windows.

If you are running Windows XP SP2 you need to do the following. If you are not running SP2 then you can skip this next step.
1. Go to the Control Panel
2. Click Windows Firewall
3. Click the Exceptions tab
4. Click the Add Programs button, Scroll down and select Emule. ***If emule is not listed then browse to: C:\Program Files\emule\emule.exe and select emule.exe.
5. Click OK
6. Click Add Port. For the name put Emule TCP and enter the Port 4660. Make sure TCP is selected.
7. Click Add Port. For the name put Emule UDP and enter the Port 4670. Make sure UDP is selected.
8. Now click on the Advanced Tab (next to the Exceptions tab).
9. Under the section: Network Connection Settings, Click the Settings button.
10. Check the list to see if you have two entries for eMule TCP and/or UDP if not then proceed to next step (step 11). Remember, only do this step if neither TCP or UDP entries are in the list. If there are two entries in the list click the TCP option and edit it. Enter either the name or the IP Address of your computer. (If you are using more than one computer on your router you may want to use the name of your computer because your IP Addresses could change between other PC?s on your network during reboots).
For the TCP option make sure Port 4660 is entered for both internal and external.
Now Click the UDP option and edit it. Enter the same you entered for your TCP (computer name or IP Address) and ensure Port 4670 is entered for both internal and external. Skip to step 20.
11. Click the Add button (only do this step if there are no TCP or UDP entries in the list).
12. In the Description of Service enter: emule TCP Ports
13. On the next line enter either the name of your computer or your IP Address (If you are using more than one computer on your router you may want to use the name of your computer because your IP Addresses could change between the other PC?s on your network during reboots).
14. For both Ports (internal and external) entries use 4660, make sure TCP is selected
15. Click OK
16. Click the Add button again
17. In the Description of Service enter: emule UDP Ports
18. On the next line enter either the name of your computer or your IP Address
19. For both Ports (internal and external) entries use 4670, make sure UDP is selected
20. Click the OK buttons to exit out
21. Close out of the Control Panel

This next step works in conjunction with a Linksys router. I have not tried this on any other router. If you are using a router, other than a Linksys router, I would attempt do this next step anyway. If you do not this probably will NOT work.
1. Go to a command prompt and type: IPCONFIG write down or note your IP Address.
2. Login to your router
3. If Linksys click on the Advanced tab
4. Next click on the Forwarding tab
5. Enter the following settings:
TCP 4660 To 4660 TCP 192.168.1.XXX (your IP Address) Enable(checkbox)
UDP 4670 To 4670 UDP 192.168.1.XXX (your IP Address) Enable(checkbox)
If you have more than one computer on your network you can repeat step 5 and enter a second IP address. Here is an example how your router could look if you have more than on computer on your router. This way if your computer?s IP Address changed from .100 to .101 on the next reboot it would matter because you have it configured in the router too.
TCP 4660 TO 4660 TCP 192.168.1.100
UDP 4670 TO 4670 UDP 192.168.1.100
TCP 4660 TO 4660 TCP 192.168.1.101
UDP 4670 TO 4670 TCP 192.168.1.101
6. Click the Apply button
7. Logout of your router.

After this is complete Windows XP should automatically install a network Gateway in your Network Connections configuration.

That?s It your done.
Open emule and see if you can connect at HighID.
If you still do not connect it may be because you are using a different router. Remember, I?m using a Linksys router but I think the settings are basically the same.

Despite what others write regarding my fix, remember, not all systems are the same. You have to find what works for your system. It works for me and for other?s I?ve helped.
Sorry, if this was not a help.

***Important: No matter what you do NEVER compromise the security of your system. I would NEVER recommend turning off your Firewall(s) to get a HighID for long term use. One exception to turning off a Firewall would be to do a simple test to see if a Firewall is causing the problem. Turn the Firewall back ON as soon as you run your test. If a Firewall is the problem you need to configure Ports to allow access through the Firewall.

Hope this helps.
Let me know if I you have any questions and feedback is welcome.

I get a high ID, but when I click the "test ports" button in emule, it tells me that the test failed, and that it was unable to open a port. This happens no matter what port numbers I choose.

Anyone has any ideas?
any help would be appreciated...

thanks

Surely if you get a high ID and the arrows are green there's nothing to worry about?

I'm going to have to agree with sammorris on this one.

if you get a high id i wouldn't worry about test port option in emule.

I must disagree with you because my emule is barely downloading right now. Since I upgraded to 0.46b, my download rate has decreased significantly (and it wasn't that high before). My averge download rate is now around 1 kb/s (can't get any worse), and yes, I do have a high id...
Any suggestions?

I forgot to mention that since I upgraded my emule client, my upload queue never exceeds 50 people. Before the upgrade, I always had a full queue... weird...

Try restoring the old version of emule and see if your download speeds return, I have no end of trouble with updated variants of programs like emule.

I went back to my old version 0.43b, and now everything is back to normal! my queue is getting filled again, and the download rate is around the low 20's (just like it used to be). I heard that many people achieve much high download rate than mine, like 50-100 kb/s. I was wondering if there's any way to enhance the download rate in emule?

a weird thing I noticed while I was using the upgraded emule client was that the only shared files that were requested from me were the ones I was downloading. Now, after restoring to my old version, all other files are being requested as well...

I'm using Emule Plus v1.1f and frequently get 50-90Kb/s downloads I have the WRT54GS router with the port forwarding I posted here.

If I install an updated version it leaves all the settings as I set them, if i uninstall then install an updated version the program uses its default settings.

You might want to try setting your Profile to a differnet setting, this is found under the Connection Tab in preferences, also try changing your ports, ISP's sometimes block ports used by P2P progs, but don't forget to change the ports in port forwarding if you use a router. :-)

Hmmm!

Bear in mind various files have different speeds. It's possible to achieve 200KB/s+ in eMule (assuming you have the internet connection for it) if you download certain files, whereas i've experienced others goinmg no greater than 8. I think emule's system is flawed. It would be far better if everyone could perform 100 uploads, even if say 100B/s each. That way you won't be connected to 1470 users and not be downloading at all. It would work far better that way. But they, that's my suggestion.

My internet connection is 750 kb/s (theoretically, of course), which is not one of the fasteset connections out there. I've tried changing my ports, but it didn't change a thing. I am using DLINK 714 wireless router (although I'm directly connected to it).
Is there something in particular in the settings that I should maybe change? I think my internet connection is simply not fast enough to give me everything that emule has to offer regarding download rate. Right now I changed to ports 21,23 because I thought maybe the regular ports were blocked or something, but I do get a high id...

to sum it up- something is preventing from my emule to work fast... :(

which ISP do you use?
If you get high 20s in the KB/s youre doing better than me currently on my 6400k/s connection so I wouldn't fret too much. As for the new version, did it reset your listen ports?

You probably wouldn't know my ISP since I'm in Israel.
What do you mean by "listening ports?"
It kept my TCP and UDP ports the same, although I tried changing ports. A friend of mine, who uses the same ISP, told me he usually gets rates around 55-60 kb/s (but he has a 1500 kb/s connection).
thanks for all the help, but I can only conclude that emule is the not the best choice if you're looking for high speeds, but I'll keep using it...

thanks

It seems like these programs are very particular and should be taken on a per user basis. I bet you could have identical systems with the same ISP and still get differnet results.

I know emule uses a credit system so the more you share the more you get. I've used it for approx 1.5 years now so have probably got quite a bit of credit.

Hmmm!

programs such as emule don't use a credit system, only Kazaa used credits. However, eMule is generally very slow compared with other programs such as Limewire and of course Bit Torrent, since its queue management system is poor.

I think emule does use a credit system. There's an option in the emule advanced options that has the phrase "credit system" in it...

I've been using emule for 2.5 years (maybe more), and my download rate is still poor, I guess there are physical limitations to emule. Bittorent is much faster, but there's not much you can do with the internet while it's running. Do you know any good websites that give links to Bittorent?

I've never found emule to be slow, its easy to use and has no spyware.
On the other hand I am constantly kept in business by removing Kaaza, limewire and a few others, to prevent or repair the teens and program ignorant people from destroying the family and in quite a few cases the business system. Even after I remove it people still put it back on; talk about lemmings jumping off a cliff lol! it really baffles me.

Kaaza is a terrible P2P program, if I wanted to damage someones system I would definitely recommend kaaza.

I hope people keep on using these programs as it means, I'll never go hungry :-)

Re: emule doesn't use credits...

This is taken from the emule forum FAQ

Can I view my credits?
Quote:
Since credits are not global but varies depending on each client you uploaded to, it is not possible (we're pretty confident there is no 'easy on the network' way of making it possible in the future either, so please no feature requests). Remember, your credits do not get stored on your computer, so don't think clients.met file is your credit file, because it isn't.

How do I build credits?
Share. That's the only way you can build credits. The more you transfer to a client the more credits you will have from it. To build credits to a more diverse range of users, share a more diverse range of files.

That's a bit different from general credits though, and reasonably worthless since there are so many users on the network. Bit torrent does have a maximum setting as well, you know. I set Bit torrent to leave at least 15KB/s of upload unused so I can still browse the net at the same time.

when you start emule, click on "Servers", then the "Log" tab.
the 2nd row of the log should say something like:
"Credit file loaded, ***** clients are known." with a number where the asterisks are. these are your credits.

oh, and if you're looking for BitTorrent links, try mininova.org. they're pretty good.

Although i doubt the legitimacy of seeding these links, Mininova, thepiratebay, demonoid (have to register but very good speeds), torrentspy and torrentreactor are the ones i use.

how does Kazaa damage your system? i've used it on & off over the years (ultimately i chose eMule) but i never experienced any loss.
then again, i am using a "less than legal" hack of it (Kazaa Lite K++ 2.4.3), so maybe that has something to do with it...

Kazaa is ridden with them.
KLite is much better, but has still caused me two reformats, so not good.

which bittorent client do you recommend?
I once used Auzorus, or something in that vicinity...

today, I tried using another different client for emule, and again, my queue stayed empty, and almost no download speed... i have to say, something weird is going on with emule, I'm thinking about formatting the computer in order to get rid of the problem...

I use Bit Tornado. Very basic, but since it works I'm reluctant to change it, and I've yet to have a corrupt download unlike the other programs I tried (Azureus, Torrentstorm)
