For all those with Wiid mod chip, there is now a new update which allows support for Region Free operation, better media compat and SMG.

Rafadawn,

My Wii version is 2.2 US and my Wiikey is not updated to 1.9g. As a matter of fact I have had my Wiikey probably for 8 months and I have never updated it so I am not sure what its firmware version is. All of my backups have always played fine. I only play backups that are from my region and just to be precautious I always run Wii Brickblocker on my backups.

So my question is.....I do not have any interest to play SMG. So is there any reason right now for me to upgrade to Wiikey 1.9g and update the Wii to the latest firmware if I am just wanting to play some newer games like Mario and Sonic Olympics or Lego Star Wars?

The update 1.9g was created to allow SMG and other games carrying similar updates to run. If you decide not to run these games, then there is no reason to update, especially considering that you may still update at a later date if needed.

You made a very safe choice by using only hames from your region and running Wiibrickblocker on it.

It is very difficult to help you without knowing what chip you have.

My Wii is modded but don't know what modchip as the geezer who done it went underground since xmas. I have a copy of Metroid Prime Corruption but it asked for a update so switched it off then I lent my mother in law's original SMG and stuck it on my Wii, Did the update which took about 3 minutes to do, turned it off and put Metroid Prime back in , did the update which was quick as a flash and started playing. My Wii system is updated to Ver. 3.0E but I seen that there is a update to Ver. 3.1 now - What do I do now , update the system with 3.1 or leave it. Also do I download a PAL version of SMG or go out and buy a original one since my mother in laws works fine...,,........???????

Thx Rafadawn for replying.... Was thinkin of opening up the Wii but haven't got a tri star or whatever they are called screwdrivers but what would happen to my modded wii if I do a system update to Ver. 3.1 coz I read alot from forums about system updates semi or fully bricking the wii and I want to know the facts!!! Decided to buy the original copy of SMG (PAL) since my mother in laws works fine with the game update on mine. Was going to start trying to download games from the pirate bay but decided it was too much hard work where as I can go to the car boot sale and get the games for kids for currently 5 games for £10 and 9 times out of 10 work plus if they don't the guys/girls are willing to swap them for a different game. Reputation must mean sumthing to them haha.. Well like I said I got my Wii chipped for my 4 kids and I rarely go on it but must admit waiting for the PDC World Darts Championship to come out so as well as Wii Fit so I can lose some of Beergut.... What would happen if I downloaded Wiikey 1.9b and g since I read that 70% of the World's Wii have been chipped with the wii key and used it on my Wii....nothing??? or would it screw up my chip.

Rafadawn thanks for the quick reply. Let me ask a quick follow up question. If I were to try to play a backup of SMG (or similar type game) that I have ran Wii Brickblocker on with my current configuration what would happen? I assume the games just wouldn't work but they wouldn't harm my Wii either since I ran Wii Brickblocker on the backups.

So when I notice the some games just aren't working for me that would be a good time to think about upgrading my firmware?

Thanks

That is indeed the case.

If a game carries an update that is needed for the game to run, then Wiibrickblocker, by blocking the update, would stop the game from running.

Most of the games carry minor updates, for instance Boogie has an update to enable the USB microphone.

However, with SMG, Nintendo tried to disable Modchips with a substantial update. In this case, if you want to run the game you will need to update to 1.9g.

I reccommend staying within one Region and using Wiibrickblocker to check the region of the images. As long as you do this, 1.9g is a solid update, that so far has worked for all games.

I just downloaded the 1.9G ISO which was supposedly file chopped and GCOS ready for burning, but properties say it is only 1.4KB not GB. What am I missing here? Thanks in advance for any help and this great tutorial.

i've successfully created the Wiikey configuration and run the program. I've set the Region Free to ON and saved it. However, it still can't play the other region games. When i checked again, it defaults to ba to Region Free = OFF. Anyone knows who should be done? And other ways to play other region games because there's always a black screen after loading the title screen. Thanks.

It will show OFF, but the Region Override is actually ON. That's normal.

Check the Region Compatibility List (link somewher in the first post of this thread)

But some of the backuped Wii games like Big Brain Academy, Word Coacher, Dogz, Horsez Ranz, Cooking Mama: Cook Off, Avatar, Legend of Heroes, etc. still don't work. Gamecube games like Donkey Conga, Paper Mario Thousand days, Mario Kart, Pokemon Gale of darkness also won't work. Some have sounds but no video. Are there any other solutions to let these games work? Though i have over 40games which work.

Any suggestions regarding a wii that has stopped reading any burnt discs. Have a wiikey that was working fine and simply quit. I had been playing metroid prime 3 the evening prior. Assumed that one of the solders had failed but was not the case. Had previously udpated to 1.9 for mario galaxy. Tried the 1.9padded on a verbatim - at(various speeds)but to no avail. The wii will not read anything. Any others with same issue. tks

@Desertcat:
That game has a minor update that needs to run before you can play the game. If you have used Wiibrickblocker on it, then it will not run. Also, what's the region of the game and that of your Wii?

@syy96:
Probably the 1.9g reset your region free requirements. Use the config disc to turn Region Override on. Also, you cannot use Wiibrickblocker on SMG or you will get a black screen.

@kitwii and @KromaZone:
Does you Wii read GCOS discs? Can you see the GCOS image in the Disc Channel? If GCOS discs work then go to page 7 in this thread and read how I helped 666. If GCOS discs do not work then either the Wiikey is dead, or the soldering is bad, or the Firmware needs to be reset (Try using the 1.9b recover disc).

@at2008:
Region compatibility is not perfect, that is why I told you to read the Region Compatibility lists for the Wii. Also, if you patch games from other regions with Wiibrickblocker, those that need to run an update will not work on your console.

Thks for the quick replys, I didn't use the brickblocker on the game so that shouldn't be the issue. The wii is U.S. and the game ntsc. I tried the 1.9b padded recover disc and nothing changed. I also tried to config it again but it wouldn't read that disc as well. I had the person who installed the chip check the solders and they were fine.
I don't think I've tried the GCOS discs so I will give it a shot this eve. Mario galaxy had been working fine when my son had chosen to play it. Prime 3 had been working the evening prior but everything failed the next day. I am starting to lean toward a dead chip. Again thanks for the assistance and advice.

I just took my wii in today to get a wiikey installation by a professional.
I asked him if i receive a setup disc and he said no?
Is it neccessary i should download the software for the setup disc?

Im a noob at this wiikey stuff. So this is where i need help.
I bought super mario galaxy a week ago (pal original), and in the process of getting my wii chipped now, so would i still have to download the new wiikey 1.9beta update to play my original super mario galaxy, or is it only for copied versions?

and also do i need to burn all my software, like the wiikey setup disc all on DVD-R cds and speed x4?

Im using a mac, and i read i need a program called filechop, is there a substitute for mac?

Sorry if there have been so many other threads with this question. I would appreciate feedback, thank you!

Hi, I am a little confused about the whole SMG thing and using the config disc and turning Region Free on, so would like some help :D
My Wii is the newest version it can be from Wii System Update, 3.1E.
My WiiKey is 1.9g, installed newest firmware recently.
I wish to play SMG. I will download the PAL version. Do I need to do anything except run it? Or do I need to run the 1.9g update again and instead of pressing A to reboot it with nothing in like I did first time, press A when I have inserted my burnt SMG DVD?
Also, how exactly do I boot the config disks, and do I need to run GCOS to turn my Wii Region Free on? Or could I just pop in a Japanese game now and it'll work? I ask this because I plan to play Super Smash Bros Brawl when it comes out in Japan (as we don't even have a release date yet :/).
Thanks very much, very new to this, my first hard-modded sytem.

1) No need for padding on MAC if you use LiquidCD (It's free and it works great)

2) Aske your modder, since he will need to test the Wiikey anyway, to install 1.9g for you and Config the REGION OVERRIDE to ON as well

3) 4x on DVD-R seems to work well in most instances.
