@Jixtreme:

Your post doesn't make clear if this is a problem just with the Update/Config discs or a problem with all sort of Backup Discs.

Do you get any signs of life from your Wiikey?
Do any backups run?
Can you Wii see GCOS discs?

I do not see in your list the 1.9b Recove Disc. Why don't you try it. If it is a firmware issue, and not a physical problem, that should take care of it.

However, if the Wiikey is not responding at all, then it's either a bad/defective/dead/fried chip or an installation problem.

Where's the party?!?

Padded? Unpadded? Does it matter?

Thanks for the help

By the way, no, I have not seen any signs of life yet from my WiiKey. I don't have my LG 816x DVD-ROM yet so I haven't been able to rip any backups. The CGOS+padded one didn't even appear when I inserted it. Now I could've been doing something wrong, but I followed the directions very carefully. File-chopped, then used WiiUI to dump out a GCOS ISO, then burned it at 4x on verbatim DVD-R w/ ImgBurn...

I'm starting to think it's the WiiKey. Damn.

Could it be "fried" as you say, without even running anything on it? I've burnt ICs before and haven't smelled anything like that coming from my Wii (and yes I checked when I first plugged everything back in ;) ). Hopefully it's still in once piece.

I said that your Wiikey is working because here you said that you Wii plays all sorts of backups from all regions.

I am at a loss here. I mean, discs that start freezing after they run twice; updates that fail even though your Wii clearly reads the disc
... I really do not know what is going on.

1) Probably a problem with the disc burns/media/quality (But then why would the backups run?!?)
2) Corrupt firmware, maybe?! [Try the 1.9b recover disc]
3) The only other possibility could be that your Wii is possessed by the Dark Force ... :-))

Are you positively sure that your Wii has a Wiikey?
Can you open the case and make sure that all six soldering points are OK?

porbably the burns quality since SMG didn't even get read.
and also i burned GCOS recovery 1.9b and it didn't load as well.
I think it's my burning quality.

1.9 Recovery unpadded did not reveal any signs of life...

Try it padded, or check WiiKey connections?

Thanks,

Ok i have now unbricked my wii the fm is 3.0E and the wii settings page comes back up but i still cant play any backups, just keep getting disc is unreadable. Ive try putting the config 1.3 disc in and the GCOS 1.3 disc but they are unreadable too. Do i need to have the GC controller plugged in for the disc to be read or should the wii still be able to read the disc without the controller?. please help

Try using the 1.9b Recover discs. Follo the instructions that come with it.
See if the situation improves after that.

Once started the Recover disc is not supposed to show anything on the screen as it attempts to reset the Wiikey to a working state.

As far as GCOS mode, you can even run things using the Switch trick. Put in a GCOS disc, open it till the point when it say to insert a DVD in the drive, switch the disc to , let's say, the 1.9b Recover one, then press the A button (or Reset) to run the "switched" disc.

You could try this with any config or update disc aand see if it work.
However, as you can see, at the very least, you need your Wii to be able to recognize discs in GCOS mode.

I've retouched all my soldering points and am confident that isn't the problem.

As for any disk that I put in (even GCOS ones) there is not response. Just a "Cannot read disk" error message. Should the 1.9b Recovery and/or the hacked boot-disk be padded?

At this point, I would try them both padded and un-padded.

Man, I feel like I must be a big idiot here because I just can NOT figure out what is wrong with this thing. I have about 12 burnt DVDs here and none of them do a thing to my Wii.

I've tried 1.9b Recovery unpadded, padded, and GCOS+padded... I've let them sit in the Wii for 5 minutes, even though I can see that the disc is not spinning. I've tried the hacked config bootdisc unpadded and padded, neither of which do anything. I've tried Config disc 1.3 unpadded and GCOS+padded, Config disc 1.2 unpadded, 1.9g unpadded and padded... Nothing works.

I've left the cover off the Wii so I can easily connect and disconnect the drive to check wire continuity and, yes, everything is intact. I've checked "downstream" on both ends of the circuit for every single solder point. No bridging. Everything is intact. I taped my WiiKey down so it wouldn't short anything with the chassis of the Wii.

Do you have any other suggestions for me? I think the only combination of disc I haven't tried was GCOS+padded Hacked Config bootdisc.

My only other thought is that it *could* be my burner, which is a Toshiba SD-R6472. Has anyone had problems with certain types of burners?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

-Jixtreme

I disagree with you.

I think you what's wrong. You most certainly are very capable and have done everything you could.

Your Wiikey is dead!

Short of re-soldering the chip, I think that's it.
Buy a new Wiikey .. certainly cheaper that keep burning DVDs that do not work.

ok here's the issue:
I did EVERYTHING Rafa instructed me to do letter by letter and yet i still get the test failed during the ass update.
All my backups work and even original GC games also work smoothly which means my wiikey is 100% fine.
I managed to read the normal config 1.3 as well.
Did EVERYHTING and i mean it.
Some wiikeys just don't update 4 no known reason.

Advice is ever in want.

So you have a PAL Wii. Do you have a Wiikey chip on it?

1) In playing games from othe regions you risk to BRICK your Wii. (For more on that check the sticky thread on Wii BRICK)

2) You can use Wiibrickblocker to check the region of images and to patch them so that they do not bick you Wii (For more on that check the first post of this thread and the sticky on Wii BRICK)

3) Also check the link for REGIOn COMPATIBILITY in the first post of this thread

4) Finally, MANDATORY READING: the thread on Wii Bricking (The whole thing).

Watch the caps - I realize you're shouting to wiikey but I don't think it will do much good here.

Could someone please clarify for me the solution for a semi-bricked Japanese Wii that has run Super Mario Galaxy PAL.
Will SMG NTSC-J fix it? Will the disc prompt for an update?
Or is WiiFit the only solution?
What games coming soon may have latest firmware (as WiiFit comes with equipment it seems to be difficult to find electronically).
Would really appreciate any help!

Right, this my 1st thread reply, this is my problem it has my head battered.

My Wii is modded but don't know what modchip as the geezer who done it went underground since xmas. I have a copy of Metroid Prime Corruption but it asked for a update so switched it off then I lent my mother in law's original SMG and stuck it on my Wii, Did the update which took about 3 minutes to do, turned it off and put Metroid Prime back in , did the update which was quick as a flash and started playing. My Wii system is updated to Ver. 3.0E but I seen that there is a update to Ver. 3.1 now - What do I do now , update the system with 3.1 or leave it. Also do I download a PAL version of SMG or go out and buy a original one since my mother in laws works fine...,,........???????
