Sorry to but in but as far as I'm aware Pioneers don't support bitsetting however they do support DVD-RAM but havn't tried it yet, well mine doesn't however that reminds me its been a month since I last updated firmware will check back.
A ha! Soz just got my internet connection in my room so in a good mood and finally have full access to my computer and the internet Pioneers can booktype using Buffalo's firmware have yet to try it even though I don't have any plus format to sample but might improve on my quality scores.
http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=36788
I know that most Sony, Plextor and BenQ do though.
Just had a Sony given to me abit ago for the crappy Aopen they sent me with my computer, Aopen are good for reading but very bad for burning, my experience.
Mavrix granted CMCMAG's mixed with my old Samsung gave me decent burns but since switching to using Liteon, Pioneer and Sony I have found decent media to be the better investment plus your backups and PS2 will last that little bit longer.

Memorex will wear down your PS2 laser faster than Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim, period. That discussion has been carried out ad nauseam. That's coming from modders, burn gurus, personal experience, etc. I've had 0 coasters in 300+ burns with Taiyo Yudens. Media quality is vital to making successful backups, and the number one reason for boot failures, look around the PS2 forums. The best Memorex'll code to is Ritek, it could end up as CMC Mag, and it's more expensive than Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim, if you order online.

My cousin has a Pioneer burner, which is the Pioneer A-105. Does that burner's default firmware support booktyping(this is a burner that can't burn to dual-layer DVDs)?

I don't believe so. I'm not 100% on that, you'd want to check Pioneers offical site. I believe the Pioneer DVR-109 and later support booktyping with the default firmware, an older model like that probably doesn't. You may also want to check the firmware page: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

I have a question about GTA-San Andreas. I used DVD Decrypter and extracted the image from the original disc and it was 4.19 GB, so then i re-built the image using Gnie's Expert Tool but the new file that was to be re-built is still 4.19 GB its not any smaller.
So anyways i burned it and it freezes at the beginning when it loads at the first load screen.
Any suggestions? thanks in advance!

Sarge, what media are you using? Ace do a google search on your burner and see what the default firmware supports. If all else fails, contact Pioneer.

A. Don't assume you know how I'm going to respond. B. I always suggest using 4x or 8x Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim, if used properly, there will be zero coasters. I've never had anyone tell me Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim is a waste of time and money, I've had several thank me for suggesting them. Afterwards they know why I was so adamant about using quality media. C. Even money those Maxells are RitekG05, if so, that could definitely be the problem. Ritek's quality has been going south for a couple years now, most peeps I know don't use them anymore. Not all games shrink drastically when rebuilt. I think it's a media issue, but you're free to do as you choose.

Tokijin, I don't have a DVD burner, my cousin has a Pioneer burner.
I have a question concerning this:
Quote: here's a complete list of DVD+R booktyping burners:
BenQ
LiteOn
Plextor
Ricoh
LG
NEC
NU-tech (also only one capable of DVD-R bitsetting)
In this list, does it mean that EVERY burner from these manufacturers support booktyping to DVD-ROM? I'd like to know because I have a friend who has kept one of his two DVD burners aside. I think the one currently in use is one made by LG, and the one set aside is a Lite-On. I don't know their model numbers, though.
My console collection: Version 14A PlayStation 2(chipped), Version 7 PlayStation 2, PlayStation(both models), Wii, Gamecube, N64, Super NES(original from US and Japan and Mini), NES(front and top loader)Model 1 & 2 Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Atari 2600, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Master System(Model 1 and 2), Atari Flashback 1 & 2, FC Twin(2 in 1 NES/Super NES clone), GN Twin(2 in 1 NES/Genesis clone), Atari 7800, Intellivision II, TurboGrafx 16, GameBoy Color

what is the big deal about dvd-rom booktyping? my LiteOn does it and I don't use it anymore because they would screw up my ps2 games, and all my dvd players don't need the discs to be booktyped to dvd-rom to play..

Booktyping DVD+R's to DVD-ROM improves compatibility with most standalone drives. DVD-ROM is the most universally accepted DVD format.
@Ace Certain models of those burners can booktype, not all of them. I don't know if that specific model can booktype. If it's really that hard to find booktyping info for that model Pioneer (some burners are) then tell your cousin to just use quality DVD-R's from Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. I haven't noticed any difference in peformance for TY DVD+R's or -R's.

Firstly, I want to thank evryone for the great information on this site. I have gained a lot from it. I'm still new at backups (a week into this). Secondly, the problem :P
I was in a hurry and still am at the moment so I pretty much blindly bought everything. The result was this a verrrry slow loading Kingdom Hearts II backup (about 2-3 min per load!)
For the burner I bought a SAMSUNG 16X DVD±R DVD Burner With 5X DVD-RAM Write - OEM from newegg.com. (wish I bought the lite-on instead after i read this thread).
My media is a Maxell DVD+R 4.7 gb(again I was in a hurry, I saw the maxell as the top quality media items, but didnt bother to see LiquidusX meant -R Maxells. If I had more time I would have ordered some taiyo yudens as well.)
My question is which of the two have caused the DVD backup to run so slowly. I've noticed that when trying to burning the iso with the Maxell 16x at 12x it burns very fast in the beggining (about 9X)then 30 secs later plummets down to 4x. I'm not sure which of the two is at fault. Hope I'm not a bother, I'm new with forums and with burning backups. Thank you.

Try to get 8x Verbatim's in either format. If you can't find those, you can get Taiyo Yudens under the Sony and Fuji labels. For the Sony label, check the spacer (piece of styrofoam) on top of the 50 spindles of Sony. If says Made in Japan on the label and the spacer is octogonal, then they're Taiyo Yudens.
@ DrChocobo (can I call you Doc Choc, sorry couldn't resist) Most likely it's the DVD's. Maxell media is only high quality if it's the High Grade Maxells, made by Hitachi. It'll say High-Grade and Made in Japan on the label. Or just order some Taiyo Yuden or Verbatims online. Start here: http://www.supermediastore.com http://www.meritline.com http://www.rima.com or http://www.newegg.com

I have two more questions:
1) Which of the two LG and Pioneer burners produce better burnt discs?
2) Are TDK "Made in Japan" DVD-Rs any good for backups? I'm talking about these ones: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS1... They support up to 2X burning. I presume I have to burn these DVDs at 1X? I know that these are made in Japan since I analyse the package of the discs I see for where they're made, and every time I saw these TDKs, they had "Made in Japan" on them.

1. Either should work okay, it depends what model you have, you can always check the maufacturers site for media compatibility tables.
2. It depends who you ask. The TTG (MIJ TDK's) media code TDK's are okay. I personally wouldn't use them, but some people have had good success with them. There's no reason to use them over Taiyo Yudens or Verbatims. FYI those were blank camcorder DVD's. I browsed futureshop's DVD selection, it's bascially crap, as well as their prices. You'd be better looking for Taiyo Yudens or Verbatim's locally. If not, order from somewhere else on this list:
86. Q. Where can I find good deals on legit Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's?
A. http://www.supermediastore.com Great List of Merchants locally, online, in the U.K., etc:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/buyerguides/buymedia.htm
106. Q. Where can I find top notch Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media locally?
A. This is somewhat of a crap shoot. Big manufacturer's like Fuji and Sony have at one point past or present payed Taiyo Yuden to manufacture media for them. The big companies slap their name on the label even though the discs were manufactured in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. These discs will always be made in Japan. Authentic TY media isn't made anywhere else. Even if it says Made in Japan on the label, there is no guarantee of getting authentic Taiyo Yuden media. You could still end up with Sony or Fuji media codes. Hence why I said this is a crap shoot. Places like Comp USA, Office Depot, Sam's Club, and Staples will carry Made In Japan branded discs. Again there is no way to know for sure from the package whether these are authentic Taiyo Yuden's. The exception is that Sony MIJ 8x DVD+R's will always code out as Yuden000T02. If you don't want to risk getting non TY discs, you can find 50 packs of Verbatim in the afore mentioned chain stores. One other alternative is the Made in Japan High Grade Maxell DVD+R's. They will say Made in Japan on the label and "High Grade" as well. These are excellent media. Remember when using DVD+R's, it's best you have a burner that supports booktyping/bitsetting, and a v.4 PS2 or later. Much thanks goes to kivory666 aka "docTY" for this information. He is indeed the Taiyo Yuden master. The best place to get authentic Taiyo Yuden media is from reputable online vendors like http://www.supermediastore.com http://www.rima.com http://www.meritline.com or http://www.newegg.com
