Excellent Guidelines ScubaPete, I havent had any problems using DVDD, I have it set to all default settings. But if I run into any trouble, I will change some settings you'd recommended. I just completed copying 1st disc of the Tenth Kingdom...Thanks again.

rudenoise,

To tell the truth, I haven't tried it.

Spot check it for me and let me know - if it ruins the dye, I'll remove it from my post - I got that item from the Internet -

One thing to try (I'll add it soon) is CD Check -

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/cdr_software/cdr_tools/cdcheck.cfm

Back to the Brasso, I have used the toothpaste and Borax. use a small amount of it, so it's pretty watery. Too much (like a pasty mix) and it cuts right through the dye layer.

Cheers,

Pete

I've had a problem with making back-up disks of 'Layer Cake' & now 'The Forgotten'. On the open disk analysis by Shrink - I get cyclic redundancy error in almost the same spot, about a minute in.
Following your recommendations, DVDdecrypt & VobBlanker then Shrink,
I have now succeeded! Thinking it was a manufacturing error - I was wrong! Both these originals I purchased are released by Columbia Pictures, on an orange coloured disk. Can't be just a coincidence can it?
I am using a Pioneer 106D, and now have two 'lives' left for region changes. Can anyone point me in the right direction for a solution please?

The one easy solution is to use AnyDVD. - At this time it can decrypt 100% of all encryptions.

They have a 21-day free trial -

Ok...newbie here, so if I'm asking something that's already been answered, I'm sorry.

Basically, I've read through this thread, but as still having problems backing up my movies. I used to just use DVD Shrink and Nero to back up discs, but have started receiving the crc error the last three or so dvds I've tried. I've tried cleaning all the discs, and still get the same problem. So I tried using dvd decriptor, as Scuba Pete set out earlier. It worked for the first disc (albeit very slowly as my dvd reader seemed to really be struggling), but the last couple have frozen up part way through. My last dvd has three read errors w/ a 162 retries and doesn't look to be going any further. I guess what I want to know is if this is something I can fix with the programs I have, or is it my dvd burner? My burner is a Sony DVD+RW DW D56A and I'm running Windows XP. If you need more info let me know. Thanks in advance.

Pumaman,

When you say you're getting crc errors, when do you mean? When the job is -reading- or -writing- ? Unca ScubaPete has noted that lots of times the original DVD has errors that cause read issues (I've seen this too). On the write-side, I've noticed that wayyy too many times I've gone back with Nero to try creating an on-disk nrg image of a platter that I just burned (to verify the disc backup), and found that I got read errors. (So the verify failed.)

I wouldn't be surprised if you've got bad media -- the main question is whether it's the original DVD disc that's bad, or the writeable DVD media you're using.

Sorry...I guess that would have been useful information:) It happens while reading the original disk (usually during the analysis period in dvd shrink). I just assumed it was a dirty disc, but now it's doing it to most of my dvd that I try to back up.

Hi i am new here i just bought a brand new dvd called downfall. It says region one dvd but when i put it in my dvd player it says playback prohibited by area limitations. I try and burn or copy the dvd with DVD Shrink or decryptor but it gets half way there and stops. I also have AnyDVD. I tried doing all the dvd decryptor stuff but its the same problems. The disk is NTSC format if that helps. any help at all will be great thanks.

Pumaman,

I'll defer to ScubaPete here, but if you're seeing errors all the time then I would guess that either you've gotten a bad run of original media discs or your drive may be failing. (Do you have the latest burner firmware updates installed?)

I don't think this is something that the backup s/w can fix for you. You can configure the s/w packages to skip read errors but that's really not going to solve your problem -- and even if it did get past the read and write, you'd likely have bad backup burns. (Scuba Pete?)

One easy way to check would be to get a DVD burner from a local Staples or Officemax (store with a return policy), hook it up and try another round of backups. If the backup works with the new burner, then you presumably have h/w issues. If not, then I would guess it's bad media.

Yeah, I'm not sure what to think, as I've now started to get a different error message. The last time I tried a disc I got this message:

"Failed to read file D:\ Copy Protection Error - the read failed because the sector is encrypted."

*shrugs* Maybe it was just a coincidence and I just had a couple bad discs.

Scubapete, first I would like to say you make this one of the best forums I have read. I just join this forum on 4/22/05 because of you. Second, this message is in response to some of the CRC errors talked about in this forum. I started getting this error message "data error (cyclic redundancy check)" when trying to analyze some DVDs using DVD Shrink. I noticed that I received this message whenever I am trying to burn a DVD with the format DVDL. You can find this on the back of the DVD. So, any DVD with this format will have this problem. I thought I would share this because you have shared so much with me. Thanks.

SORRY GUYS,

Spent the last 8 days with my surgeon inn the hospital and could only get online a couple of times -

The CRC errors are 99% a media issue. Updated guides for Shrink and DVDD and Shrink and Nero are on my site with suggestions on media ?

Here are some "tricks" to help with your crappy media ?

STOPGAP FIXES, (NOT RECOMMENDED) to help you over your poor media "Hump":

1. Here's a good fix. Compress your DVD to somewhere around 4.3GB instead of the recommended 4360MB. I.e., Go into DVD Shrink, "Edit", "Preferences" then set the "DVD Target Size" to "Custom" and enter 4300MB as the size. Reducing the amount of Data to be burned it keeps your burning away from the disc's edges where the dye on poor quality DVD discs tends to be uneven and may even be brittle and flaking. Nero, DVD2One and most good burning applications will allow you to set the, "DVD Target size".

2. You may reduce the number of errors and "artifacts" (the "freezing", " skipping", pixelations and other picture abnormalities) when burning poor media by burning at a reduced speed. It has been my experience that burning at 2.4X will succeed where faster burns will not. Don't be surprised if you have to burn at 1X. Some discs you're lucky to have it burn DVD Video at all. It will take longer but what the heck, you're saving money with those "Cheap" discs, who cares about time when you're saving $$$$ (Lol). Since you're compressing more it might be wise to burn just the movie, the less you burn the better the quality soooo, movie only, please.

3. Super Cleaning, is a "sometimes fix" which has been known to sneak a few extra disc into use especially when your PC refuses to recognize the disc.

We'll divide it into 2 parts:
The first is to literally clean the discs prior to use, even those fresh out of the pack. Using Isopropanol Alcohol and a soft cotton cloth and rubbing firmly from the center of the disc outward toward the edge. Continue until the entire disc has been cleaned. Commercial cleaners and solution are available at your local electronics store and they work quite well. :)

The second part is to "reboot" your PC just prior to attempting to insert your disc into the drive "cleaning out" your clipboard and your RAM memory. It helps ~ Go figure ~ ?

I hope that and the new updated guides will help,

Cheers,

Pete

ScubaPete recommends a toothpaste with Borax in it. Surely he means Baking soda; Borax would burn your mouth. Actually you don't need the toothpaste bit; a paste made of baking soda and water will work, and is far less abrasive.

When you say that you "drag" the files - I'm supprised you copy anything.

It migh t be time to read a guide and learn how programs work.

If it was "click and drag" why do you think there would be so many different proggys ?

For starters, read the guide in my sig - start with the one for Shrink / Decrypter.

Start from the beginning and follow the steps exactly and you should have no problems.

I've had my burner since christmas and what i always did was to load up AnyDVD, drag the dvd files to a folder on my pc, then if it was a regular DVD-5 disc i would burn it with regular Nero and if it was a DVD-9 i would open the folder with DVD Shrink and lower the quality to fit on a regular disc and burn it. Ive burned about 15 discs this way and it workes fine, i dunno why you say it wouldnt work. But this movie copies about 2/3 the way and i get that cycle error. I've already been to your scuba pete site and it says to rip the dvd with DVD Decrypter then take the file and open it with DVD Shrink but DVD Decrypter gets a read error exactly 50% into the process, and yes ive tried setting up the preferences. I have tried different combinations of programs like your tecniques and some off of other websites. My last guess is the disc could just be one of those defected discs.
btw i do use that dvd decripter and shrink and it works good but just not on that day after tomarrow disc

Sorry, I should have said - it may be fine for some simple DVD's BUT for any episodel, series, ARccOS encrypted OR multi-angled movies I couldn't see how you could do it. As it is, you shouldn't have had too much problem with Sky Captain as it didn't have anything special on it.

Moving on . . .

OK, glad you tried the guide - it gives us something to work from -

When you were decrypting using DVDD, did you receive your error while ripping to your HD ?

If so, AND you were using a current program we can check some basic things first . . .

What mode did you try ?

If you had any problem at all with ripping in the File MODE then I suggest ripping it in the ISO Mode as it will grab everything on the disc - every nuance SO if it plays on a player, it will play after you finish doing this.

As memory serves, If you rip in the ISO mode, open Shrink, go to - FILE - Open Disc Image, let it analysis then burn it to disc using DVDD and it should come out perfect.

Let me know how it goes, Okie Dokie ?

just an idea, I have had the same problem before as well as my brother did. An older dvd burner seemed to be the cause. Went out and bought a new memorex burner and no problems since on any dvd. My brother has his old burner still gets problems and I rip them for him.

@ dannyjr89 - Looking at the screen shots you posted, "Unrecovered Read Error" is DVD Decrypter's way of saying your disc is either to dirty or to scratched up. Clean the disc and try again. Toothpaste or Pledge can be used to lessen the severity of scratches. If it still fails after cleaning it, obtain a different disc.
