I have a problem with my Wii and i wonder if anyone here may have a suggestion/guess on a solution.

My Wii (PAL) i modded with the Wiikey chip (i have the d2c version on wich you have to do a little bit of "dremmelin" ;) )
LG DVD (the images dumps just fine)
Pioneer D112 (brand new)
For media i use RiData, Verbatim and Maxell all DVD-R

Now to my problem.
Sometimes my backups works just fine, my Wii loads the disc and i can play for hours (both Wii games and Gamecube games)
but mostly my Wii won´t reconise the disc at all.
(orginial dics loads ok everytime so it doesn´t feel like it is any problem with the laser/reader in my Wii)
I have done a bit of reading in this forum and have tried to change region settings on my chip and the speed of the reader but no change.

I have tried to "burn" my backups with different speeds (1x-4x) and... nothing.
So now it´s getting kind of frustrating.

Does anyone have an idea?

If I'm playing and I decide to switch games I'll eject the old game and then pop in the new one and hit reset on the console. Sometimes this gives me a disc read error. I just fix this by ejecting the disc, powering off the console completely (hold the pwr button til it turns red), powering back up, click on the disk channel, THEN putting the game back in. Always works for me.

The discs are clean and i have tried to shut the wii of and on.
Start the Wii open the disc channel then put in the disc.. same problem i´m afraid.
I´m starting to think my chip is defect or something

I was contemplating getting my Wii modded and had contacted a local retailer that does that sort of thing. They had indicated that they do mod Wiis and quoted me a price. Then I got this message from them.

********
Yes it will void warranty. We just got our first unit back today. Our technician told us there is also some caution to the modification. If you plan to make the switch to universal, you must constantly update your system on-line before you insert any new Japanese games. As the game has firmware which updates the unit automatically and you do not want the system to have Japanese firm ware mixed with us as it will cause problems.

*****

They have now said that they will discontinue modding Wii's altogether because of this. Is anyone else aware of this?

Message for Dragondt.Backing up is really simple just follow the above instructions and hey presto you are there. The best media to use is really anything with a good dye.I tend to go for GO5 OR GO4 RITEK DYE GRADE AAA.Approx 12p each(sorry from the U.K) approx 24 cents. For burning purposes i use nero version 6 or above.Hope this helps.

Great thread, i dont know if this has been asked tho, and i couldnt find it on google...

are there any SATA drives that can rip wii retail DVDs? cause the LGs suggested were IDE drives.

also, which burner should i use to burn wii games? i currently use the one i have in my DELL 700m and it seems to be fine. i'm thinking of buying the for my desktop for burning wii backups.

Cooling and your Wii

The Wii has an own cooling system that works !!... Only when it's turned on though... When you switch it on Standby and Wii 24:7 is on... The processor is still bussy and doesn't get cooled !!

Media can't sustain the heat
Cheap and Expensive media, both can't handle temperatures above the 50'Celcius. The Wii can get 80 !!! This can seriously damage you backup !!

Solution
Buy an extra coolingfoot (i've got one from Bigben 10 euro, about $15)

Good luck !!

PS. I will repost the HOW TO BACKUP BACKUP DISCS POST next week !!

Has anyone had any success making back-ups for Wiikey modded systems using Verbatim DVD-R discs? If not can someone give a real quick review of which DVD-R discs work well for backups besides Sony?

I have used Verbatim -R 16X and have had som trouble getting the Wii to read the discs, sometimes they work sometimes not.
I have also used RiData 4X and had the same problem.
Does SONY work well for you?

I have the D2C chipset wii and i don´t know if the WiiKey D2B fully supports it yet, maybe if they release a firmware with D2C support my problems will go away ;-)

Actually this may sound silly, but I haven't even modded my Wii yet...I've just been practicing backing-up my games with the LG drive and rawdump/nero (just to make sure I could do this right, otherwise there wasn't any point to mod my machine) so I haven't had a chance to check out the games I've backed up yet. I'll let you know, since I'm getting my Wii modded locally soon. Personally haven't used Sony, but I seem to remember skimming this thread and remember reading that a lot of people seemed to have the best experience with Sony DVD-R at a slow burn speed.

This may sound like a stupid question but what do D2B and D2C refer to? Does that mean the type of Wiikey chip (i.e. are there different versions) or does it refer to the type of Wii? I've heard something about the newer Wii's being much harder to mod.
