Thanks for all the input people. It looks like getting the DVD drive and external enclosure will cost about $40. Last additional questions, sorry if they've been answered already:

1. Do you need special types of blank DVD's to burn the backup copies of the games or will any DVD- or DVD+ blank discs do just fine?

2. This may be a stupid question but I'm kind of a computer novice. Once you get the DVD drive/external enclousre, how do you connect the externally enclosed DVD drive to a laptop, do I just need a USB 2.0 cable or something like that?

1. DVD-R only, I have had limited success with DVD+R discs when I was out of -R, but only limited. Also, Ritek seems to be the best followed by Sony for me. I haven't had one fail yet unless it was a buffer underrun from trying to multitask (dual core my ass! :))

2. It (external enclosure) will come with a USB cable, just use that.

Well I just ordered my LG-8164BB and external enclosure, I figured I'd put it together and make some test burns/dumps of Wii games before I send in my Wii for modding. Figured if I can't even burn/dump games properly, there's no point to do anything else right? :)

Last question about backing up games/burning games for the Wii: Can anyone address quickly whether this process is the same for GameCube games? First of all, obviously you have to get a different sized media/disc for GameCube games, just the smaller blank DVD right? Are those easily able to be purchased? Also do we use the same tutorial at the beginning of this to make good GameCube game backups?

Also, if anyone can link me to a good thread/chat for comparisons of Wii mod chips, I'm trying to decide between the Wiikey and Wiinja Deluxe, I've heard varying things about both of them. Looks like I'm going to have to get the Wiikey but if the Wiinja Deluxe is that much better then I'll buy it and ship it along with my Wii to the guy who's modding my Wii.

The problem I'm Having though is that RAW DUMP is a windows app... is there a mac alternative??

Hi, am a newbie..been following all of the backup directions diligently. I acquired the LG drive, downloaded the software, dumped "Pirates of the Caribbean", got the ISO in the rawdump folder..and all I have to do is burn the damn file. I am thinking ..wow..first time and I am out of the woods. Then trouble! using IMGburn (latest release) and my Phillips DVD writer, I keep getting the foll error:

"Unable to lock volume for exclusive access"
"Reason = Access is denied"

Anyone else get this? Should I try a diff software (I know people mention Nero but I dont have that application). Do I have to change my writer (someone mentioned Pioneer), but I dont want to put the cart before the horse. Appreciate any help.

Is your Rawdump folder local? (On the C drive) Is it read-only? If so, uncheck that. It sounds like permissions, which is very odd if it's on a local drive.

How many bytes does it have.... If you check the properties of the game .iso it maybe the right amount. Just remember to check the beginning of the forum.

Also, have you been trying the same game? I have dumped over 20 games, and all have worked perfect the first time unless they were dirty or scratched...

Thanks. I did download Nero's trial version. This time around I was able to burn the ISO on my Verbatim -R DVD. Unfortunately, I cant check it as I am still waiting for my modded Wii to get back to me. If this works, guess I am good for 30 days. How much will Nero cost me anyway?

Hey this is pretty much the last thing I need to know about modding... Do you need to use Nero? I have Roxio that came with the computer but I already seem to be having some tech difficulty just getting it to read the program to recognize the blank dvd as a dvd. Well I have the trail of Nero 7 now and it worked like a champ with one of my games. I hope to now be answering more questions then asking them.

I'm haveing a problem with my backups. It seems to only happen with a couple games. I can be playing a backup and after about ten minutes I get an error saying that disk can't be read. If I eject the game and put it back in it starts playing were I left off, but will happen again. This only happens with a couple of the games I back up, the rest of them work with no problems. I'm using Tayo Yuden media with a Lite-On burner. Has anyone else had this problem if so were you able to fix it thanks.

That error is due to your burning program (in this case ImgBurn) not being able to exclusively access the DVD writer. Make sure you have no other programs open that use the DVD writer (especially Windows Media Player or iTunes or the like)

Hope this helps.

I'm a newbie here and have read the entire thread and have found it very helpful. I just bought my wii a week ago and recently had it modded with a wiikey. My LG drive from newegg just came in today. I dumped my first game with success (the bytes matched up) it took a little less than 3 hours. I then used Nero to burn the iso image. I burned it at 4x with TDK discs. I tried to play it in the wii but it said it could not read it. I read in the forum that the verbatim discs worked for users. I'm trying some other sony discs that i currently have. I guess if this doesnt work i'll try the verbatim ones. Does anybody know if something else can be the problem here? Thanks for your help.
