A question I have which is semi-related to backing up Wii games.
I installed the Wiikey myself yesterday and I think it went pretty good. I checked the resistance between all points before and after installing the chip, and tested for continuity to make sure I had no shorts - all tested out OK.
I turned the Wii on for the first time and menu came up as normal. I downloaded the config disc 1.2 from the wiikey site and burned it to a dvd+r disc. (I dont have any -r's at the moment) I also have another game burned to a +r disc. On both discs I got an error saying cannot read from disc.
Is there anyway to check if the chip is installed correctly other than to boot a backup disc?

I believe I read someplace that you can do a regular dvd copy using nero or any other dvd copy program.
After I do a raw dump I leave the file??.ISO on my hard drive incase I need to make another copy of my backup disk.
Then I just do another image copy.

Same here, for the price of slightly over two games (110), you can get a 500gb maxtor SATA hard drive that includes an external enclosure, or for $90, you can get just the drive if you have SATA(300) on your mobo. Might as well keep them all...!

I'm fairly new to modding - I went ahead and modded my Wii with the Wiikey. Everything seems ok - the wii turns on fine and recognizes original games...however, I've tried burning games - used the LG drive and rawdump, burned with IMGburn at 4x and 2x on Memorex dvd-r and Sony dvd+r, respectively. Each time the Wii says the disks are unreadable, and says to check the wii manual to troubleshoot. Is this just a problem with the media, or could it be with my installation?

Most likely your mod. Can you post pics of it? Did you try the Setup disc from wiikey.cn ?

I had the same problem. You need to use -R, +R didn't work at all for me. Good Luck.

To dump games you need any of the listed drives

To burn games to a dvd you can use any dvd drive, you don't need one of the listed ones.
I'm sorry for the confusion i created.

If the copied games you're trying out are PAL (if your system is NTSC) or NTSC (if your system is PAL) you might need to run the Wii setup disc. http://www.wiikey.cn/dl/config.1.2.rar
Download it, run the proper one for your region, burn it, insert into Wii, turn on the RegionOverride option. I found that some PAL games won't work for me unless the RegionOverride is on.

My system and games are NTSC - well should be, I bought it in the US, so I would hope! From what I've read, I shouldn't have to use the setup disk in that case. I am planning on purchasing the Verbatim DVD-R's and trying them out since they have gotten consistent good reviews. If that is unsuccessful, I will send in a photo of my wiikey connection.

they are two different softwares...
Imgburn burns the image after you rip it with Raw Dump.

UPDATE
It is possible to backup a Wii backup !! Owners of the Wiikey can also create a backup with a SD- Moded CubeMemorycard. They only have to run de DVD-DUMP software on the wiikey disc.

I'm just wondering why it's taking 3 hours to dump to the Hard drive? I got a LG 8164b.
Maybe I just got a sucky computer.
P4 2.53GHz 512k Cache, 512MB DDR 400MHz, WD EIDE 80GB 7,200.8 RPM Hard drive.

Nope... I've got a AMD 3500+ 1700 Mb RAM GeForce 7800 GS etc...
But it still needs about 2.4 hours!
But be nice that you CAN backup them !

The newest Wii's (D2C) are vitualy not Modable. You have to dremel in the chip etc... So better wait until they find new footages on the chip to hack it with...

I just went to wiikey.cn and found an official reseller. Worked great. f__n_m_.com was the cheapest.

Clean the disc. The only time I got errors was when the disc was dirty or scratched. It was a .Net framework error, so it totally threw me off, but once I cleaned it, it worked all times except for one. That disc had an obvious flaw in it when I looked closely.
