Ok, here is what I did.

I have a cable modem, Linksys router and am running Windows XP.

1) Set up Port Forwarding from the router for 8660 - 8999.
2) Realized (helps to read the HELP) that PF only works if you aren't using the router DHCP.
3) Set up static routing for my network.
4) Added 8661 - 8671 to my Windows Firewall (it is NOT turned on, but there are sometimes issues with the "off" setting not actually working, so this is just to cover it all).
5) Restarted everything

I was getting 3-7KB/s

Now I am getting a variety from 10 - 190 KB/s. Not sure why it is varying so dramatically (I have been paying attention to the peer listing and it isn't a high rate peer dropping off, just slowing down).

I am still trying to figure out the best setting for my upload speed. From reading this thread, download speed can be affected on cablemodems by high upload due to the talking back and forth to validate packets. On the other hand, you are more likely to get a higher download rate/download from more people if your upload rate is high.

Hi
I tried to do the instructions on the first page and i did all i could (some stuff was different) but I am still getting crappy downloads.

Anyone know what is wrong?

In windows firewall, i made exceptions with torrent tcp 8661 - 8671 and i went to my router configuration and to port forwarding and the page had the current setting and the headings on the columns were -
ID, Public Port - Start, Public Port - End, Private Port, Port Type, Host IP address.

I had to create 2, one for the TCP and UDP. I started my public port - start at 8661, and the finish at 8671 but it automatically changes it back to 8661 so both the start and end are the same.
It then has private port i dont know what goes in there
and then host ip address.

anyone have any idea?

i have a netcomm ADSL router. and i use windows xp.

thanks

d-Link wireless router users can check out this link which provides step by step port forwarding. Hope this helps. Is similar to the steps using a linksy router. IP address of linksy router will be different. Cheers ! :)

Hi, I have been using Azureus for a long time and it's been working great with a very good speed and all. But my problem began when I switch the Norton Virus from 04 to 05( expired on me:P). I had to redo all my allow list on the firewall. But the thing is: Norton doesn't let Azureus through even though it's on the allow list. I tried and tired. I even uninstall Azureus and undate to the latest version hoping to solve the problem but with no luck. I don't get this at all. I appreciate any help :\ ......

btw, Azureus would work when I turn off Norton, that's how I know it's the firewall that cause problem. But I don't think it's good idea to turn off firewall while downloading though, right? thx

I read through the first 16 pages of this thread, and didn't get anywhere. My Belkin Router needs a static IP, but Comcast won't give me a DNS server number. So I bypassed my router, disabled all firewalls/virus protection, and checked my modem for a firewall. From what I can tell, my computer is a sitting duck, but something is still hiding my ports. WTF?

I was thinking about doing a short video tutorial, on how I set this up, and diffrent options you can do. Would anyone find a short video AVI helpful, going through the processes?

this isnt to make it any more confusing, so i will try to be percise and to the point, I have a static ip set on computer, i have ports forwarded, my upload is usually nothing less then 50K and usually maxed at around 90K at all times, now i have gone thru all torrent clients i have, tweaked anything i could see that would need tweaking, like amount of clients connected, and so on, i have used bitlord, azerus, and bitornado, and even though my upload seems to max out, my download is consistantly at 80-100K, now that is far cry from my max down speed of 750K, i have seen 250K twice and thats it, i know people say the amount of seeds and peers makes a difference, but with bitornado it shows what the people that are connected, are downloading at and when i see people downloading at 320K upwards of 500K, it really starts to piss me off that im getting such slow download speeds, now i have come to the conclusion that it has nothing to do with how many people are connected but how many people are actually sharing all of thier upload bandwidth, and i will say this to all you pathetic losers that turn your bandwidth down to 1K so you can get faster speeds, or because you dont want to share, which is why alot of the torrent sites have gone private, and because of the people that refuse to upload because they complain that it slows down their internet, it happens to everyone deal with it and cope with it we all have to suffer thru it, but its because of you people that dont share your files, that i will only share a 1:1 ratio and shut it off

Hi, being a bit of a Newbie here I would like to ask what will probably seem like a daft question to the experienced users. When I use port forwarding am I just telling my router that Azureus should use the various ports that I open or am I telling my router that all traffic should go through the ports that I have openened. For example will Internet Explorer and Kazaa now use these ports also or are these ports strictly for Azureus.
Many thanks for a reply. :-)

Chris

in azeruse preferences it has specific ports you can set, as long as those ports match what you set in router then only azerus will use those ports specified, to that particular computer

My knowledge of this stuff is pretty limited, so I'll try and be direct as possible and hopefully someone can help me out:

Basically, whenever I run Azureus, I can't download anything and if I try and test the server port, I always get an NAT Error. I'm running my Internet via a Wireless G Router which picks up the signal from a cable modem. If anyone has any suggestions on how I can get rid of the NAT Error and get my downloads to work, it would be very helpful.

I use a SMC 7004 VBR, does anyone have experience with that? I tried configuring my port forwarding settings, and the DMZ, but the torrent download speed only increased a little from an average of 0 kbps to 3-10 kbps. It's better than before, but it's still terrible.

My specs are: Windows XP with 510 KBPS RAM, 80gb HD, cogeco cable, 2.4 GHZ Intel Pentium 4.

Hi, sorry I've no answers on the slow torrent download speeds via router just more questions.

I have a Thompson 510 router (hardwired system) and 3pcs on my home network. I have Bitrorrent clients installed on 2 of them (Bitlord on one and an array of others on the 2nd machine including Azureus, G3 and Bit Comet although I usually use Bit Comet). I can rarely download above 12kbs although I have a 1MB ADSL connection.

I tried on several occasions to set a static IP address but could not improve things. I have spoken to the technical people at Thompson (the routers' manufacturers) and they suggest I leave the IP address on 'auto'. My Internet Service Provider (AOL) tell me that they use a 'rolling' IP address system so I should not try and set my IP address to a static one.

I have played with choosing different port settings, fiddling with upload/download settings, seeding like crazy and a good old fashioned thump on the router but nothing makes any difference.

Has anyone got any ideas please?

Many thanks,

Terry

First of all, your ISP has no say in wether you set up a static IP for your network or not. The reason you would set up the static IP is for Port Forwarding. If you let your router dhcp IP's to your computers, the problem is, then its automatically set for port triggering. Port triggering is actually more secure then port forwarding, but, without Static IP for your network, port forwarding no matter how hard you try, it wont work. So, if it doesnt work then forwarding ports isnt gonna make your downloads any faster. Port Triggering Is fine, for Applications like Photoshop, and Acrobat pro, and any other application that ISNT a file sharing program. If you ever notice, Tech support of router companies, always talk about you having to "forward the ports", they never say anything about you having to set the "trigger ports"
