Bad news Winter37, I've tried everything possible (Windows Firewall OFF, port forwarded and not forwarded, triggered and not triggered, DMZ enabled to internal IP address....) and my DL speed remains in the 1,5-3,1 kB/s range. I ran a speed test and I got 39 kbps download and 46 kbps upload speeds against the 640/128 kbps claimed my cable ISP - Netcabo, which I think is less than a typical 56K modem!!

newbie here...using a motorola wr850g, no firewall etc...i've been to the port forward page, followed directions and all but my ports are still not open and forwarding. i used port detective and the nat check to figure this out and of course my downloading is not eclipsing 9k. yes, i did the static IP thing and ive switched between a bunch of different clients with no outcome. i'm 99% sure i forwarded my ports and set up my static ip properly but all signs point to me doing something wrong. can anyone help?

Hey Winter37, I've tried eveything you send in your posts on the previous page. I am using a netgear MR814 earthlink dsl. Opened the ports but still downloading at 10-20 KB's. Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Dave

I had problems with ABC and BitTorrent. If your downloads are going slower than they should, there is a reason. I have a BT 1250 router with a 1.225Mb/s connection, and my downloads were going at 10kB/s average. So I opened ports 6881-6999 on my routers firewall, and turned off my windows XP firewall. All downloads are green. And now my downloads are averaging 105kB/s which is as fast as I would expect.

At last, it seems this thing is performing better, however I still have 3 doubts:
1 - If I forward the Azureus's Incoming TCP listen port in my Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless Broadband Router, should I also trigger it?
2 - If I enable UPnP in Azureus (Tools/Options/Plugins/UPnP),should I enable it in the Router?
3 - If I enable UDP tracker client protocol in Azureus (Tools/Options/Tracker/Client) and (Tools/Options/Tracker/Server), do I have to forward any port in the Router, and which port? And what about triggering that very port
Hope someone may enlighten me.
Regards and the best of luck to you all.

guys! for those of you who know what you;re doing, clarify for the rest of us:
if ports are forwarded properly, ip is static and firewalls are down, why are speeds still slow even with many seeds?

simple question, huh?

p.s. this applies to many donwloads so tracker is probably not the issue and i happen to be using the original client and bit tornado

I'm a newbie and I followed the simple directions at the beginning of the thread. I have a linksys wireless wr54t router. set it up the way camdog described and this morning I downloaded a xxx movie at a constant 80 kB/s uploading at 30 kB/s that's the fastest I've seen since I've been doing the torrent thing. I used Azureus as my bit torrent client no problems. And that's a p2p. now I have a server that i connect to directly and do some downloading, so i put that port in my routers configuration also and my downloading speed jumped from 187.8 kB/s to 230.3 kB/s I was very surprised.

i just found out that my modem is also a router...if i passed the natcheck and "port detective" tells me that my ports are open but my speeds are still horrible, could it be the modem configuration?

I tried the Port Range Forwarding in my linksys router like you said on the first page, however, as soon as I did so and downloaded something outside of torrents, the download speed was 10-7 kb/s, as apposed to the normal 110-175 kb/s. I haven't tested it with torrents yet since I am unaware if windows 2000 has default Firewalls or not - and besides, hackers must have found a way around that by now anyway.
My ports are obviously closed right now (oh goody, 1.5 kb/s to 21kb/s download speeds on average in Azueres - how splendid), and I WAS told by a friend of mine who is good with computers, that ineed, opening ports are helpful. However, I still have no clue how to do this corectly. Port Range Forwarding doesn't sound like port forwarding, but I could easily be wrong. He'll be over tomarrow, but I figured it'd be best to post here as well in case he cannot help (he has a cable modem, and therefor isn't used to the routing and networking aspects, as he hasn't had to deal with it much).
Well, that's enough from me for now. Good day.

P.S. On a helpful note, the reciever for my linksys router is a Wireless B 2.4 GHz USB Network Adapter.

Scratch that last post. I already figured it out, and got some assistance from my friend. However, it does make me curious as to why the Wireless Network Monitor (Linksys) says there is "No Association with Access Point" now, even though the internet is working fine - heck, even better than fine. I saw a normal download going 197.8 kb/s, when it used to go just 125 - 175 kb/s! A torrent file download was able to reach 66 kb/s and STAY THERE for more than a second, and the average speed was more with less seeds! Huzzah.
Anyway, getting back to the Association Point thing. Either a "ah just ignore it, it's high" or help would be appreciated. Well, good day.

Hello

What r the "private ports"? cuz i have them on my router configuration but not sure what they r. They r next to my "public port - start" and "public port - end" column.

Also it would be great if someone could leave me his email here so i could email my router configuration picture, just to make sure i am doing everything right. Cuz my internet speed is 4m and the download speeds are max 45 kb/s.

I'll tattoo the name of the person who helps me to get the download speeds up to 200 kb/s on my head!!!

First I just read the first and last pages so this has probably already been covered but I just have to say that drchips is a moron.

dominator,
Just make the public port and private port the same. For Azureus you just have to forward 1 port, the incoming listening port in the connection preferences.

I'm very new to this internet lark. I've had several problems getting my ABC to run properly. The best thing I can recommend for amateurs banging their heads against the wall is to visit portforward.com. This site is great and can inform even the most ignorant (me). Before I started I had download speeds often as low as 0.5 kB/s and never higher than 5 kB/s. After visiting the site and following the step-by-step comprehensive instructions my ABC is hitting download speeds of 50kB/s. Nothing worked for me until after I visited this site. And it's 100% free with no pop-ups or advertising (for a change).

CamDog was half-way there, but unfortunatley I don't have LinkSys and setting up my system worked differently. One piece of information he provided that was helpful (and not on portforward.com - I don't think) was regarding setting up XP's crap firewall, now I don't have to disable it to download with ABC.

>>>>Opening ports within windows xp's built in crap firewall. It can be a bit time consuming, because you can not add port ranges, only single ports, so you will need to do this about 16 or so times, for each port between 6881 ~ 6889...

{{I changed my settings to different numbers for this.}}

1) Click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections and then click Network Connections.

2) If you have a cable modem or digital subscriber line (DSL) connection, under LAN or High-Speed Internet, click the connection you use for the Internet.

3)Under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.

4) On the Advanced tab, make sure that the check box Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet is selected.

5)Click Settings.

6)On the Services tab, click Add.

7)In Description of service, type a name so that you can identify the port you want to open. For example: Torrent. Type a name that will help you remember the service and the port. You can use any name that you want. The name does not have any effect on the functionality but is only to help you remember.

8) In Name or IP address of the computer hosting this service on your network, type your ip address

9) In External Port number for this service and Internal Port number for this service, type the port number (the same number in both boxes).

10) Click either TCP or UDP, and then click OK.

{{I only had to set up TCP with my system.}}

PS - Dr.Chips, whether you're lying or not - I don't really care. If you genuinely know something that everyone else here doesn't, at least volunteer the information, or b@gger off, as far as I'm concerned, this is not an ego competition. People come here for help and to exchange information, not to be patronised...Byeeeeeeeeee.

When I started downloading torrent files I was getting a speed of around 34KB, but now I getting speeds of 100KB+,
In the beginning I thought it was bitcomet that was slow but it was actually my internet speed that was slow.
people go to:

Ok heres the deal, I have done eveything that i think i should, opened my ports on my router (10000-60000 think that is just for bit tornado) do not have a firwall (except for router) Have cable connection of 4mbps, using bit tornado, have connection of around 60 peers 9 or so seeds and can't get over 60kb/s. My settings for sharing are max upload of 20kb/s max uploads of 4. Is it my sharing rating??? Now i think eveything is correct with all my settings (green light is lit up) and it might just be that...well...thats the best its going to get. It is a frustrating thing though seeing a low speed like this especially when others say to have speeds of 300kb/s and up. It might be they just got lucky with what file they were trying to get???? I dunno?? I just want to know if there is anything I am missing something or if this is the way it is. I guess i just want it faster, just like everyone else.

ok, so here is my situation. I've tried everything, at least I think so. Hopefully someone can help me out. I usually use a cable modem and have never had problems getting a green light and a great connection. However, I moved and had to switch to a dsl line through sbcyahoo. I use a speedstream modem and a linksys wireless-G router. I've forwarded ports 6881-6999 like usual. Still yellow and VERY slow dl speed. I uninstalled my zonealarm and disabled the windows XP firewall. Still yellow and VERY slow dl speed! My dsl uses a PPPoE connection which means I had to bridge my modem and configure my router to PPPoE in order to use my router. Would this be a cause of the problem? Another possible problem I thought of could be the fact that my internal IP address is constantly changing between 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.115, could this be a problem? Do I have to actually set my NIC card to a specific IP? I feel like I've tried everything, but nothing works...still yellow light and VERY slow dl speed. Im using BitTornado as my client, its always worked well when I had cable. Someone, PLEASE help!
