1) You should install 1.9g before updating. However, even if you update first, it will be ok.

2) DVD-R seem to work better. Personally, I think it might have something to do with bitsetting. Some burners do it automatically, som don't. Same with burning software. That would explain spotty results with DVD+R.

3) In general, only a handful of games are dangerous. Those are the ones containg substantive firmware updates. The names of this games are well-known (check this thread, the one on bricking, etc..).

You may want to use Wiibrickblocker on out-of-region games, but you shouldn't take that as a 100% guarantee that your system will not be bricked.
Do your research online, read this thread, and you should be OK.

I'm fairly cautious on all my burns and making sure that I have the correct region etc. However, I had burnt a PAL version of GH3 for my WII-NTSC. The kids grabbed the game and put it in and did the update and now I lost my WII Settings with the Opera error and the duplicate wii options on the main menu.

I tried putting in my original GH3 NTSC version and it didn't force a new update. I then tried Galaxy NTSC and no update there.

Am I stuck waiting for the next firmware upgrade to come along with a game?

Thanks in advance.

Is it safe to register your wii with nintendo under the message channel. If it is, can someone tell me what good it does to register it. Like if they send you messages about new things etc..

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I have wiikey, and I want to know if Nintendo can detect if you have it or if they can mess with it.

I have a Wii with wiikey installed...but some games I could play ok such as Myth Makers SuperKart GP PAL Wii and some are NOT...they give me error ==> The game disc could not be read . Please read the Will operations manual for more info. I believe that I need to update to 3.1 ...
Question is : how do I update to 3.1 ?
how do I turn REGION OVERRIDE : ON ( on Config 1.3 ) ? Please help me out ...

Run games, including SMG. They should be fine.

Please read initial post for Reminders and Notes before beginning the update.

If any problem arises (and it shouldn't). then go to page 7 of this thread and look at the exchange between myself and ___666___.

Everything you need is in the first post of this thread.

@wiigame
So far Nintendo does not seem to be able to identify mod-chips online. No real benefits I can think of by registering online.

@hogcia
Hosting company pulled the plug on the site. The updates for Wiikey were provided by team D2ckey anyway, and their website is up. That's it!

Hi rafadawn,

Thanks for the info.

I gave up on the DVD R+ and bit settings and bought some DVD R-

Now the discs ar loading.

However, I can't seem to update 1.9b or 1.9g and the config 1.3 gaves me the DRE. Does this mean I don't have a genuine wii key.

The updates to 1.9 say that the testing has failed and to check connections.

Any advice? Should I attempt 1.9b recovery?

BTW updated to 3.1J

Hi,

some updates. Hopefully good news.
I managed to get config 1.2b running and set region free on. Does this mean I'm using a wii key modchip?

I still can't get 1.3 running ... neither can I get 1.9b or g to go past the testing part i.e. stops at test filed please check your connections and try again.

I don't have a GC controller, is the hexed 1.3 version useful in this case? if so, where can I find it?

Also, what should I try to do next ... should I be working to get the 1.9x updates working or config 1.3?

Summary:
I'm on 3.1J
Have set region free on via config 1.2b

1) The only thing that will confirm that you have a Wiikey is the completion of a Wiikey update (1.9b or 1.9g). The FAILED message you get probably means you do not have a Wiikey.

2)You are able to run backus (even the Wiikey resource discs). That's it!! You're set, go have some fun! Don't worry about future problems and what not ... just get back in touch with us when games do not run.

:=)))

Ok guys, here is the deal: when it come to the Wiikey there are only three things that we can do:

1) Update the firmware:
You may try 1.9g (filechopped original file). If that doesn't work, them try 1.9b and then 1.9g.
If these files do not work, then try the padded version from the initial post.

[Always use correct region]

2) If no update disc runs, then you might need to run a Config disc to turn REGION OVERRIDE On:

Same deal here. Try Config 1.2, or 1.3, or the Hacked 1.3. If something doesn't work, then try the GCOS version of it.

[Make sure that any image you burn is at least 1.35GB. If not, filechop it.

3) If anything else fails, then you need to try to reset your Wiikey, using the 1.9b RECOVER disc:

once again, try the original version that you need to filechop or/and the version already padded. try regular of GCOS types.

The 1.9b Recover disc will show nothing on the screen. You need to let it run for 3 to 5 minutes.

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

If nothing at all work, or you get a FAILED message all the time, then:

1) You do not have a Wiikey

or

2) Your Wiikey is either physically disconnected or broken

I assume you are talking about after you insert disc and click on the disc in the channel?
You don't just put the disc in and do nothing for 3 to 5 minutes, right?
I had to ask.

Right now sorry for the delay I just got home, started burning some discs for that purpose, I bought some Verbatim DVD-R and Got some Memorex DVD+R I am burning on the Memorex as they are the cheapest to find, the verbatim are $0.90 each so THEY ARE EXPENSIVE here... so I will try these + and if not will use a verbatim - hope one works.... hopefully!

Okay I burnt like a LOT of PALs and USAs now my question is for 1.9g you need to put the disc in, leave it in for how much time and then click on the Dics channel? OR after putting the disc in click on the Disc Channel and then leave it there how many minutes? Cuase all I get is... No disc or not recognized... is that okay?

I have tried 1.2 1.3 1.9g pal and us only missing 1.9b recovery any suggestion will help me a LOT! HELP!

Some more questions (sorry if I sound stupid), just trying to narrow down to problem area.

1. If config 1.2 runs and I can set region override, does it not mean I have a wiikey mod chip. According to the definition of:

What is the "WiiKey Base 1.2 Disc" ?
The base 1.2 disc for the WiiKey is a multi use application suite for use on a Nintendo Wii enhanced with a WiiKey Modchip. It's primary purpose is to configure the WiiKey modchip with your desired settings for its use. Along side of it's basic practical uses, this suite allows users to backup their Wii/Gamecube games to an SD card via a GCMC (gamecube memory card) to SD adapter, Load media (game's, applications, audio and video) via the SD-GCMC adapter and/or DVD media, and play a variety of classic SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) video games via the SNES9x application provided.

2. If config 1.2 runs but not 1.3, what could be the possible cause? I burnt them both the same way.

3. I am able to play old US backups (e.g. Wario Ware) on my Jap console. Does this mean the modchip is working? I just can't upgrade to firmware 1.9b or 1.9g (Fails after testing connections). I will be exploring the 1.9b recovery disc (do I really need a GC controller for that?)

4. Finally, if question 1 confirms that I have a Wii Key mod chip, and question 3 confirms the chip is working, then does the problem lie with burning the 1.9x discs? Or has my logic gone wrong somewhere? Will GCOS help in this case (in which I will have to hunt or buy a GC controller)?

Thanks again in advance.

U are not the only onse sounding dumb here, sorry me too! I am confused, I have burnt all the discs, used even a Maxell DVD-R to burn 1.3 Config and still cant get the chip to work, the connections are well done, I can play originals, but the working Copy I have is not, the Wii is not even recognizing the DVDs I have burnt, Should I try a specific one burn at 4x on a DVD-R instead of a DVD+R?

I cant get the discs to run, they all say there is no disc or is not a Wii disc.

As I said in my last reply, if no backup game is running, and if no config or update disc is running then eother your Wiikey is dead, or there is something wrong with the soldering.

In your case, you mod-chip is obviously working.
Now, the question is: is it a Wiikey?

Before you attempt anything else, kindly, answer this question: can your Wii run SMG(Jap)?

As for the 1.9g update not running: well, the point of the 1.9g update is to allow SMG to run on a Wii with Wiikey.

There are only two things you can try to make the Wiikey disc run:

1) Try the Hacked 1.3 Config disc
2) Try the 1.9b Recover disc, followed by the hacked 1.3, and then the 1.9g

Well at least the good news is that the mod chip is working!

Sheepishly, I do not have a copy of SMG(J) so can't answer the question as of now.

Understand that 1.9g also has some update that gives you USB keyboard support?

Question: In the event that the modchip is NOT a WII Key, will running 1.3 or recovery damage the non-WII key mod chip?

Hi,

My Wii is currently at version 2.2U.
I would want to upgrade the version but not confident of doing so.

So just need to confirm all points before I get myself working on it.

I tried to update my Wii via the System Update at the Wii Menu but it doesn't seem to be updating. It is stuck at the screen "Updating..Please do not off your system......." for a long long time. I have to off the power in order to stop it.
Don't know if this will kill my Wii.

So after reading this thread. Just want to confirm all steps before I start.

1) Install 1.9g
2) Run Config discs to turn on Region
3) Run SMG

Am I right?
