Hey everyone, I've been reading through the thread but I seem to be having a problem even tho I am following the steps listed in the first post.

I dled all the programs needed and I can't seem to get my computer to do the Rawdump.

I have the LG drive suggested and I am using in a external case since I am doing it on a laptop. I've read others that have successfully done this. It keeps telling me that I have a faulty drive but I know I dont since I can use it to watch DVD's.

Its connect via USB 2.0 on the external case.
Can anyone help me!??

I seem to be having a problem with my computer once I put a Wii game into the drive. The computer hangs and I'm not able to open or close programs. I try ending processes through Task Manager and restarting them, but this also hangs up the computer. Is this an issue with the DVD drive trying to read the disk?

I just received the GDR8164B DVD drive. I popped it into my computer, I believe it is set on slave, and Windows XP assigned a device driver to the DVD drive.

I was wondering if there was a difference in any of the models from GDR-8160B through GDR-8164B?

Seems like the 8164B is most popular? Why? Availability, or is it more compatible with more games?

Thanks.

No, just when I put a disk in this DVD drive, it locks up so badly that it takes hours for the system to open basic programs.

In the device manager, the DVD drive is listed as HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8164B SCSI CdRom Device

Did Windows assign the right driver or is there another version I need?

First I want to say thanks for everyones input on which mod to get and how to mod my wii.

I had a few questions about the recent wii update. I am sure I am just being paranoid but I just modded my few a few days ago with the wiikey.

How many notices did you guys get in your wii? I got 3. One about new vote channel update, one about new update with usb, and a notice about the user agreement? Did everyone get the same?

Since this I removed my wii from 24online and even removed the online connection. Am I just being paranoid about them knowing my wii is modded? Should I just relax and do the updates?

Also, ever since I got my wii modded the votes channel was way off. Would say that there was 300+ days until the vote was over. I have tried to adjust the date, but no change. Has this happened to anyone else?

I tried friidump and when I entered the commands to burn the data to an .iso file from the disk, it gave me the message that it failed to initiate the DVD drive. Exact error message is:

Initializing DVD drive... Failed

Also when I start WiiDump the DVD drive does not show up in the drop down menu to select your DVD drive.

I tried to flash the firmware to the recommended version (0L06) and used DiskInfo to check to make sure it had the correct firmware installed, here is its output:

DISCINFO VERSION : 1.6.1.6
VENDOR : HL-DT-ST
MODEL : DVD-ROM GDR8164B
REVISION : 0L06
VENDOR SPECIFIC : 0BLCA 05/06/01
INTERFACE : ATAPI
RPC2 SCHEME : NO

Is there anything that I am doing wrong or something I'm missing?

Also what's the best mod for the wii? I dont know what all the features actually are when I go to their sites so please keep that in mind if you answer this part. Still need the above quote answered though.

OK i read the first 15-20 pages so can someone tell if i got this info right?

IN order to make your own backups, you need a LG drive so it can properly read the oringnal game correctly for dumping and ISO burning. However, if you plan to download your backups (which i do sometimes when my PS2 game backups dont work if i try to make them myself), you just need a good blank DVD+R and a ISo burner like Nero or DVD decrypter.
Currently the Wiikey is the best modchip. IS this all right? Yes i did read it but i want to make sure. Thank you

This is just frustrating. I bought the brand new LG8164 and it says I have a faulty drive when trying to use RawDump, is there any other software that anyone has tried to create the dump. Does the dump really need to happen can you make an exact copy of the disc, anyone elses advice would be awesome. I really want to make this work.

Thanks for everyone's help thus far, I truly appreciate it.

I'm having the same problem Joe. I did however try the program FriiDump and it is working with my drive. I would like RawDump to work because it is roughly 2 hours quicker in dumping the disks, but nobody seems to have a solution to our problem.

Name thank you for acknowledging my concerns, where can I find a good copy of Friidump and are there any other dump software out there besides these two?

If you want to play backups of GC or Wii games, pretty much all of the modchips do the same thing.
Currently there are no huge features of a particular chip.

I have a generic(clone) WiiKey, and have not had any problems with the chip or Wii. I think I paid around $15US for it.

As for the legality of downloading games, or even having backups is pretty blury. Below are my thoughts.

1. If you download the game via torrent, others (ISP, individuals, companys, etc.) can find out your IP Address. It would be up to one of them to catch you. (I was caught by HB0, downloading a sopranos torrent.) They sent my ISP an email stating that one of their IP addresses was illegally downloading an episode. I then received an email from my ISP, stating that they will turn over any information if there were legal proceedings and that I was liable even if someone was downloading the episode without my knowledge.

2. I go thought the hassle of making my own backups, to not attract any attention to myself. Lets face it, if they want to pursue me in a court of law, they have alot more $$$ than me, and at that point it is going to cost me $ no matter what.

Who is to tell to the company/ISP that you are obtaining a backup for a game you have purchased, or just getting a copy so you don't have to buy it?

I didn't know where else to post this, it's kinda Wii/RawDump + computer related so I'll post this here, instead of making a thread. During dumping an iso using RawDump 2.0, the time that tells me how long its been were heaps of numbers... I can't really explain it. just instead of like 2 hours to go its like just a bunch of random numbers. Then the computer's date was reset to 1999. o.O can anyone tell me whether they've had this problem before? I find it weird, all the other times I've used it, it happened now.

I was dumping Alien Syndrome if that's any help.

Alright new issue here, I was not successful with RawDump but I was successful with FriiDump and would highly recommend it. What I need to know is the following:

1) After the dump is done, it is image file with FriiDump. Does it need any other conversion before burning?

2) I did dump and burn successfully but my Wii does not recognize it, do I need a chip to use these DVD's?

Thanks for your help!

You need to mod your Wii with one of the mod chips that are currently out there (Off the top of my head, cyclowiz and wiikey come to mind). Once you solder them onto the Wii's motherboard and setup the installation disk, the burned Wii games should work.

On another note, I figured out how to get Rawdump to work for people that are facing your problem Joe! If you have Windows XP, boot the system with your XP disk and choose to do a new install of Windows XP. Once the installation has loaded, select the option to REPAIR. Let the installation do its magic (should take roughly 45 minutes). Once you boot up Windows for the first time, try Rawdump out and it will detect the 8164B drive and will be fully functional!

I always suggest trying the setup disk first. It has the fewest possibility for error. If it does not work, chances are your install is bad.
