I still have not seen a response from several pages ago regarding the current LG DVD drives (not burners, just a read drive).

Newegg only caries 2 current drives, and neither are the models listed in the first post.

Will any LG DVD-ROM drive work?

no it will not, just look at the first post, those have been tested and worked, u can try new ones but it'd be at ur own cost. go to ebay for the drive, newegg isnt the only place to get them

you can burn wii iso's with any dvd drive but to actually be able to read them you need to get a specific lg drive(look at first post) to take a rawdump of the original wii dvd.
the wii does take a bit more wear n tear from back-up, but noone has really reported damage of this matter so i dont think we know the extent, but im sure it does however little it may be. hope this helps. -sLibs

I put together a list of specific models, brands, and an ebay search for all the DVD-ROM drives that have been confirmed to work so far here:

I can not use cd+ disks?

Thanks.

You cant use CD-, you have to use DVD-R. As for me I use Verbatim DVD-R.

Hey it does the whole thing, gets like 2 seconds left, freezes and then tells me that it overloaded. I used Metroid Prime 3 when it did and was woundering what's up. I saved all the descriptions of the error but it said overload at first or something like that and I checked the file size and it was too big. I NEED SOME HELP PLEASE!

Sorry 2 double post but I was woundering if the drive type has to do with this. I finally found another guy with the same problem on pg. 50 or 49(something close) and his advice was scratched/dirty disk. Well if I had the wrong drive would it say the same message? Seriously only tell me if your sure and not thinking "well probably" or "that must be it" cause then you dont no.

Most of us here have resolved our problems, or don't run into problems. Because we have not ran into YOUR problem, all we can offer are suggestions.

If it is dumping some of the file, but fails at a certain point, it seems to be a problem with the disk.
Were you able to backup a different game?

I know i'm dim (my wife told me) but to save me wasting anymore disks,
after buying an LG drive and using the raw dump program, do I then have to use DVD- disks to back up my wii games or can I use dvd+ disks. Do both work?
I have a couple of games already backed up on to disk, do I have to go through the whole raw dump and burn procedure or can I just burn straight from the disk somehow?

Thanks.

If you already have a back-up you can straight copy it using any burning software, theres no need to rawdump again. Im pretty sure i use dvd+ although i dont know the full on technicalities of the types of dvd's im almost certain that any dvd-r/-rw/+r/+rw is fine

Bunny,
In your original post you had
"seem to be common among people that do not use high quality dvd's. For a thread dealing with media check here."

However there was no link provided for the media discussion, can you post that?

hi all, ok i have searched for the past couple of days for an answer but haven't found one, so am posting in case someone else has ay ideas. I have had my wiikey installed by modchipfitters(UK), and they tested it and sent it back, but when i try to play a backup, or setup disc, i get the unable to read disc error for both gamecube and wii backups. to burn the backups, i have used rawdump(original discs), and the files came out exactly the right size as per tutorials.i use the 8164b drive on usb to read them and then burn with imgburn on pioneer 111d 1.29(ATA).i have experimented with 2 types of crappy media and Verbatim dvd-r 16x certified. i have burned at 1x, 2x, 4x, 6x, 16x, and not a single disc will work.nero dvd\cd speed says the burn is good, and i have tried everything i can think of and find online, including torrents. Why would it work when the pros tested it, but not when i got it back? they will take it back and look at it for me, but i said i would try everything before i send it back, incase i have made a dumb mistake! i sent only my dvd drive to modchipfitters who tested it in one of their Wiis, but when i put it in my Wii, it won't work. i am running 2.1E firmware, should i update that via internet? could it be faulty chip? if noone can help, it doesn't matter too much as they will take it back and have a look for me.i am just a bit mystified, so any help or advice on what else to try would be greatly appreciated.thanks

only ur dvd drive? meaning not the chipset that the modchip is on? you should always update your wii but for other reasons (eg, anti-bricking). have you tried getting backups from your friends and testing it? Have you flashed the firmware or anything like that on the wiikey? A faulty chip may be the case, but that does sound a bit wierd.

sorry, i did send the dvd drive with the chipset on it, just meant that i didn't send the whole console.i had already attempted to install the wiikey myself and got the same problem of not reading backups, or any setup config discs, so sent the drive withchipset to them for repair.but it has made no difference.not sure how i can flash the wiikey firmware if wii doesn't read dvd-rs, and none of my friends have theirs chipped so have no known working backups to test.wil have a go at updating wii, so long as it won't affect wiikey, which from what i have read, it won't and go from there.

burning from an image and not just making a dvd data right? i dont mean to insult your intelligence but some people don't know much about things. well if it isn't too out of the way maybe you should go to the guys that modded it and see for your own eyes that it works because i can't see a problem with what your doing.
