AHMEN to that. I wont look at vista with the hubble telescope! Heres some interesting burn comparisons. I think My DRU820 is gone and my 830 is going. Toward the end of my discs it starts to ERROR like crazy. This ones not TOO BAD.
My 820 SHOT is too large for the post but here it is. The score was sooo bad I needed a large SHOT. http://img356.imageshack.us/my.php?image=2ndtyg02bg6.jpg
Yes, Im aware that these burns are nothing to shoot down, but... IM PICKY. I THINK my 820 is suffering from extreme vibration?????

omegaman could you give us a little more info? What speed are you burning at and anything else that might help. Ripping progie and such. tia... ;)
The only thing that comes up on the radar is the speed at which you're burning and making sure you have "real" TY's. ;)

Gm, imgburn says its TY, Nero says its TY. Is there some other, FULL PROOF way to KNOW for a fact that a disc IS what it says it is? Oh... I only ever burn at 8x. I read somewhere that 4X isnt always the best choice. Depending on media and burners 4X could actually be considered stupid in some cases. I used dvd decypter up until a few weeks ago. Then I switched to imgburn. I'm IN LOVE WITH IMGBURN! LOL. No, seriously though, its all I ever use. Please believe me when I say I KNOW, that the burner caused the freak 820 scan that I posted. My media always comes from Supermediastore. Seldom ive used meritlines TYG02's. But TYG02's are THE ONLY discs my burner see's. With the exception of my remaining verbatim's. And of course, the industries TY's.

Go here and download DVD Identifier 5.0.1. They have it here at AD for download, and it's free. Very simple and easy to use!

omega man I'm 99.99% sure you have the real thing and if they're fake you wouldn't have that good of a burn. ;) As it seems you are having drive issues and another thing to do is try another spindle and see what results those discs might give. There have been cases that the TY brand has an issue but NOT very often.
Go here and see how to determine the origin of your discs. ;)
Some other things to consider is a fresh flash of the f/w or even a cross flash but if the drive is going nothing will bring it back. Laser replacement is a possibility. ;)
If the drive has over 1000 burns then a new drive is in order. :) If you would like some help choosing we would be happy to do so but I would consider the Sony/NEC/Optiarc AD-7200A/S or a Pioneer 116/216. Of course the Lite-On iHAS120 is a good un too!!!! :)

Appreciate the feedback MUCH MUCH. I'm afraid optiarc let me down though. I gave them one shot months ago and they blew it. My DRU class sony's are, and have been through out AWESOME. My lite-on is the only thing better. Yah, I forgot to mention also, that the 820 has for half its burning life made a curious clicking/grinding sound. BUT... its never had a coaster so I shrugged it off. BUT now, it will never see another disc. I might give it to a buddy for a reader. Poor guy has a 99 compaq 800mhz (PROCESSOR) computer.
Might I recommend, to anyone reading this, The sony dru's are sold at WALMART. Walmart's return policy is AWESOME. DONT buy it online. THANK YOU for the info on the identifer, I heard about it before but spaced it, then forgot about it entirely.

All Optiarcs are not created equal...the 72XX series GM recommended are highly sought drives. Any series drives before that can be questionable.

LOCOENG... YOU are the man. I consider myself to be open minded. I will give them another shot. Besides, it is only 30$ avg. RIGHT? Hmmm... Newegg has them. I forgot that NEC paired up with sony on them. Ive had an NEC before too. Cra*&^&% out on me after 100burns. Though I was a heavy, heavy smoker around it. My computer will never see another cigarette. Really weird rip errors too. I didnt know that a dvd-rom/writers could screw up video audio sync till that burner. Must've given it cancer. LOL :0

You're absolutely right about the Optiarcs. I have two, one the LiteOn version Optiarc 7191S Lightscribe. It was adequate, but the Optiarc AD 7200S-NEC is great and I also have and recommend the LO 20A1S. I burn with the former-NEC and read with the litey.
newegg.com for cheap burners
editted the burner #s for optiarc 7191S and 7200S

as the creakster said dont get caught up in the hoopla of these scans.they are a mear tool to have fun with and brag about the scores ya get. ive seem to have gotten a name for the numbers part of these scans(which im proud of) most of today's drives are made on the same level.yes some are better than others but in all pretty equal. if your gonna look at the scans to determine quality. in my eyes after looking at a few thousand of them..lol your main concern is the PIF's that is what will tell you if you have a readable disc/reripable disc. but in all if you can put the disc in a pplayer and it play and look good to your standards, its a 100% good burn. and if you can rerip it and get another good playable disc your golden...
as for a new drive. the sony/nec/optaric AD7200S is a awesome drive.i have one myself. along with alot of others here. i have yet to see a complaint about one. you cant go wrong with it. i also have to toss in the liteon LH-20A1S. i know it is very hard to find them now but they are a good drive as well. outside the 7200s i havent bought any other drive. i have all 3 of my liteons running well over 3 years now (well for my 16x litey)and no problems out of them.. other then operator error..
ok you all done it made me fell the need for a scan. got tropic thunder gonna burn it and scan...ill burn with both the 7200 and 20A1S and scan with both and post all.
edit:
i would do dual burns but being down a stick of mem i wont...dang come on UPS guy...lol

LOCOENG,
I have a Sony/NEC/Optiarc AD7170-A, which is NEC based and it is an extremely good drive. I've had it for over 2 years and have burned about 700 DVDs with it without any problems!
