@Mort

Do those round cable work out better, and which one is your choice. I am still fighting the battle of the new computer and I think there is just some kind of IDE problem, I am wanting to replace the cable.

arnie, I like them because they are much more flexible and also allow better air flow. I'll never use a ribbon cable again. Any of the ATA/IDE 133 cables should be good. I use a single cable for each of my dvdrw drives and have them both set as master on their own independent ide channels since both my hdd's are SATA.

Edit: the ATA/IDE 133cables will be 80 wire.

Hey guys, I am thinking of buying some taiyo yudens. I am a big fan of the fuji MIJ and the Sony MIJ..mainly because i did not want to order online. I am going to give it a chance though, but I had a couple questions. The taiyo yudens come with shiny tops on it. Well dont those kind of DVD's scratch, get dust, and get other marks on it very easily?? I like how the Sony media have a nice surface to write on, and so far i havent had any scratch marks on them. I was thinking about these from rima...good or bad?

hey buddy, i had a quick question regarding the round cables too~ hehe, my "cabling experience" is only with home theater, so i've always used the ribbon 40 pin/80 conductor cables for my PC...

i've read in certain articles that some dvd burners do not work well with 80 wire, i don't know the validity of that claim but what do you think about it? other than the better airflow, do you see an improvement using the round cables? i really think i should switch to round cables as well, but need a SOLID/TRUSTED response from ya before i order from coolerguys.com as per your link~ :)

please enlighten me as i've been using the normal "ide 40pin/80 conductor" ribbon cables this whole time, i RMA'd my 2nd replacement mobo as it was defective and i'm still building my main rig/desktop up at this point...

your imput would be greatly appreciated, i should be receiving my new mobo sometime next week and i'd like to have my round cables ready if you think they would work well for me...

p.s. on my main rig, i'm swapped out my burners and will be using a Benq dw-1640 and my Sony dru-710a; i also have them on the same IDE 1 channel, would it be a "better" idea to put them on separate IDE channels as master like you have done? or does it not really matter?
i have a 300gb SATA right now with my backup 400gig IDE on master IDE 0 channel at this point. please help a newb with your opinion on IDE channel settings, round cables and multiple burner setup~ :)

hehe, i prefer the silver ones too, found here:

http://www.coolerguys.com/840556017431.html

also, lastly, i've also read that the longer the cable, the higher the chance it will not transfer the data as fast? that makes sense to me, but once again i don't know how valid that claim is either...what length are you currently using? i have the 18" ribbon cables at this point, but think the 24in round cables would suit my needs better...would you recommend the 36in round cables? any experience with the "longer" cables? (ie. 24" or 36")

LOL sorry for so many questions, but i gotta LEARN something on AD once in awhile~ :0

Hey docTY~!
As a system builder, I'll give you a recommendation regarding EIDE cables. The rounded ones ARE nice! Rule of thumb is not to exceed 18 inches, Howver, if the cables are decent quality & wire gauge, you could go 24-26 inches OK. The ones you're looking at at PC Toys are very good. Check at this site. Link for you:

I have a couple of these Coolermaster ones.
This site gives FREE 2 day Fed-Ex shipping. There is where they might be the best priced.

You have "taken the cake" for me.... I can only respect your willingness to help out others, but I definitely respect the humbleness you take in trying to learn as well... Mort81, Arniebear, and Alkohol are others who have exhibited these traits as well. I am SO glad I stumbled upon AD!!! BTW, has anyone seen Creaky lately??? He is another one...

Do you think there is any value to switch to the round over the ribbon or is it purely aesthetic?

You are probably asking the wrong person but I will give you my opinion and experiences. Are you getting back at me for asking you so many questions when I was setting up my surround sound system? ;)

I've never heard or read anything about 80 wire cables causing a problem. If anything they should improve the data transfer.

I like the round because not only do they improve airflow but they are so much more flexible and easier to route not to mention they look so much better.

I wouldn't go any longer than you need to. I wouldn't go 36" unless it was absolutely necessary. The cable to my drive on bottom is only 10" and the cable to my drive on top is 18"

I don't really think it matters if you go with a master and a slave on one ide channel or have independent channels for each. I set mine up with each drive on its own ide channel because both my hdds are sata and both my ide channels were available so why not. Two drives is all I intend on putting on my setup.

How many IDE channels do you have on your mobo? Can you even get a mobo with more than 2. I would say if you can set it up with each drive on its own ide channel that would be the way to go.

Sorry about jumping around so much. I had to keep scrolling down to see what the questions were. Hope I helped a little but like I said there are a lot of folk that would know better than I. I for one will never use a ribbon cable again after being spoiled by the round.

@arniebear, To answer your question, I see No "Performance" benefit using the rounded ones, however, the ease of cable management, improved airflow and just less clutter in your case make them very worthwhile to use! It's all I use anymore. I would be careful on how long a cable you use. you can get some signal degradation if over about 24 inches. You may experience a small "lag" in performance if using too long a cable. Suggestion: Go to any local Computer tore that actually builds PCs. Most motherboared these days are being shipped with round EIDE cables. These places tend to use the ribbon ones in a build & save the round ones to sell Cheap. 2-5 bucks usually.

@mort81

thanks for your input, i haven't used any mobos in the past that have more than 2 IDE channels, so, yes, mine has 2 also : IDE channel 0 and IDE channel 1 :)

i've been pretty satisfied with my mobo for about a year, i had the Gigabyte GA-8S655FX Ultra that held up quite well for me for well over a year, but, since the recent HUGE power surge here in LA, it got fried as did my PSU and one of my hard drives~ i had a backup APC power unit "protecting" my computer, but it obviously didn't "do the job" it was intended to do, so, that went back to APC as well~ :P so, i sent back the mobo directly to Gigabyte for "repair"...which they sent me back a refurbished mobo, same model number, that was defective once installed...

i have opted to change to a different model now, being the Gigabyte GA-8IPE1000 Pro-G; i'm hoping this one will "do the trick" just as well~ :) as you can see, i'm still running an "older" chipset, the socket 478 pentiums (i have a 3.4ghz Extreme Edition w/ 2mb cache currently), 4 gigs (four 1gig sticks-maximum for my mobo) of Mushkin Enhanced Mushkin Redline XP4000 DDR 3-3-2-8 at 250MHz ram, i don't like the new Intel LGA775 chipset as my PERSONAL experience with them proved that that they ran TOO HOT for their own good~ (mind you, i go EXTREME with cooling too, as far as i possibly can with AIR cooling, i don't wanna mess with water cooling at this point in time- i use Zalman's newest CNPS9500 LED for my cooling needs with artic silver 5 in between~) :P

@bunnyrip

thanks for your advice as well, i have been building computers for myself and friends/family for about 7 years now, so i do have a lot of experience with just BUILDING in general, i'm not much of a "modder" nor do i overclock anything in my own system...just the basic stuff but i never really educated myself in terms of "cables" internally between component to component~ :) i just used what i have, which in this case is your standard 40 pin/80 conductor ribbon cables, been using it for years and while i've never seen a problem with them, i'm always open to "better" technology for simplicity/effectivness/performance gains~ :P please let me know which one you would go with personally, the 18" round cable or the 24" round cable? i'll buy whichever you recommend... :)

i'll def. take your suggestion as to the length of the round cables, 24" would suit my needs perfectly, but i COULD use the 18" too, if the round cables are more flexible than the ribbon, that should be long enough for me~ :) i don't think using a 36" would help me out at all, that's just TOO MUCH cable for me~ :) as to your zipzoomfly link, thank you, i've ordered from there before as well, but i get charged sales tax here in CA...but with free shipping, might come out to LESS than the washington based coolerguys.com with no tax :P

decisions, decisions..hehe, i'll see which one has the lower shipped price once ALL the tax+shipping+item price is weighed in...but, i'm def. gonna order some round cables before the night is over~ thanks for all your helpful suggestions

@teflonmyk

uhm...thank you? hehe, there are certain things which i KNOW a lot about (dvd media, home theater cables, home theater components, pc components ( psu, mobo, cpu, gfx cards, memory, burners, etc) but i'm pretty weak is other aspects of the "overall" picture, i can talk for days specifically about a particular media ID code, a specific graphics card, specific model mobo, specific powersupply, specific intel based chips, etc; but when one steps back and takes a look at the "bigger picture", that's where i still need to LEARN a lot~ :P i do what i can to help on here, with my limited knowledge in CERTAIN specific areas, but as my buddy gurnard does, i TOO "lurk and learn" with the best of em'~ :)

@arniebear

i think we all have had our fair share of "new computer" woes, whether it be compatibility or just plain and simple, it does not work...i'm very glad that AD has so many knowledgeable people in their own aspects of the whole "technology" thing...i'm proud to be a member here to both HELP and to LEARN a thing or to and be educated by others who obviously are MORE experienced than i am~ once i get my new mobo and these round cables, i'll be back in business...

btw my "dvd burning" has dropped off the map, when i had all 3 computers and my laptop going...i could easily backup 100-150/month no sweat, lately, i've only been using my laptop and i've only been backing up the new movies my wife buys (girly flicks, not my cup of tea...rachel mcadams is def. a pretty one tho, my wife has been buying ALL the movies that she stars in lately, ie. the notebook, mean girls, hot chick *i like rob schneider, so i found that movie to be pretty good*, etc.)

anyways, that's my rant for the day...

have a good one all, i find talking about computer components to be VERY interesting...i'm "behind" in the sense that i have not switched over to the new pci-e boards, SLI capable and ddr2 memory, but, for the time being...i'm very content with my AGP setup using Intel's fastest socket 478 chip at present time~ :) in about a year or so, i'm thinking about going with AMD's dual core setup..but until then, i'm still an "Intel guy" :) (i've had quite a few Athlon builds in the past that were extremely fast, but as i get older and i'm not a "gamer"...these Intel chips are "good enough for me" :)

docTY~

Yeah I may consult with some of you guys when building a new PC. I won't be doing so anytime soon, but I plan on building a Mac with a dual channel mobo, and some kick arse DDR2 memory. I'm staying as far away from MS Vista as possible due to all the Digital Rights Manangemt crap built into it. No way MS is controlling what I download and have access to. Palladium or whatever it's called nowadays, is not going control my download habit's. Most of you probably know what I'm talking about, anyone who doesn't, check here: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~rja14/tcpa-faq.html

Hi gurnard,

No screwdriver required here. Got me an antec case. Flip 2 levers and sidepanel is off and everything is accessable from left side. Front cover also snaps off and dvdrw drives snap in and out. Hdd's all snap in and out in their own little unitized container. No clear side like the doc but I don't need to see that tangel of wires on the inside anyway. Actually doesn't look that bad inside. Round ide wires helped a lot and most other wires are neatly wire tied. Me old pc had screws in back and sides and top came off as a unit. Pain in the arse.

@ the doc,

Somehow I figured you wouldn't stop at just ide cables. Cooler guys also have great prices on power supplies and cooling accessories.

dagodan,
