Where do most of you purchase TY genuine media? I've seen Rima posted as a good site, how is Meritline, Mediasuperstore? Any other great places for authentic media? Thanks.

i have an Maddog 16X3DVD98XE dvd burner, it is a rebadged Nec 4550, and for some reason its does not like ty02, i burn at 4x & 8x and i get low quality scores. I burn the same movie on my desktop ( which is a lite-on 16939s ksob ) and i get excellent quality scores

maddod is an external dvd burner, any suggestions

@aabbccdd

I usually use TY's with my BenQ and Lite-On drives with excellent results.

These BenQ's are AZO dye. That is why I asked.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Just wondering if any one had tried them before. Price is right.

Don't know about the coding. They didn't list it. If I decide to get some, will post the code ASAP.

Not the best manufacturers - only sony is good - so you would get pot luck!

Thank you everyone for all the help over the years. I have used Tayo's for a couple of years now and love them. This last batch I received from Meritline.com work great on my pc. They were supposed to be -4x but are actually -16x. I have not had a problem with them at all but my brothers Sony DW-D22A burner will not even recognize them. Does anyone know where I can get a firmware update for this burner with detailed instructions on how to update it?

Yes I have and I strongly recommend against them. They code out as being made by daxon. Some played back without any issues directly after burning but they all had playback issues within 6 months if they would even play at all.

Kivory have you seen the Plextor 18X burner thats out? and can you over burn the TYGO3s to 18X ?
as a matter of fact i have seen and read several articles about it, i'm on the waiting list actually as i really would like to try out the new drive when it's released here in the U.S., what's interesting is that the price tag on it is not as hefty as the past ones, upon initial release, namely, the drive that you currently are using~ (PX-716a) :)

but, i already KNOW as i've heard from Taiyo Yuden, that this new Plextor DOES overburn 16x rated media @18x, but, the ONLY one i know for SURE is the 16x Taiyo Yuden DVD+R = media ID coded YUDEN000T03 :)
i'm only GUESSING that the 16x rated TYG03s perhaps MIGHT be overburned too, but, i don't know yet as my contact with TY was limited to the answer of 16x DVD+R DOES overburn, didn't get a straight answer regarding it's sister 16x DVD-R format~ :)

i wouldn't be surprised to see the Verbatim 16x rated discs (MCC004) overburning as well, we'll juss have to wait and see i guess...

i got 2 burners on "pre-order" at this point :

1. Benq dw-1650
2. Plextor PX-760A

p.s.

i don't really care for the Roxio bundled software, so, i'll prolly give it to someone once i get the drive~ :)

@rockyn

that's the problem with OEM Sony drives, firmware is a BIG headache to find, also, i've noticed in the past that especially with Sony, their OEM firmware updates are VERY scarce and are not found on their homepage...my personal suggestion, if you insist on buying OEM drives, get a burner from Benq, Liteon, Pioneer, or anyone else for that matter EXCEPT Sony... :) Sony's OEM support is laughable, almost as bad as the media ranking from digitalfaq :O (yup i said it, it had to be said...LOL) they really gotta update their "tier ranking" system, what pisses me off is SO MANY PEOPLE here on AD link to that site for "media suggestions"...c'mon, WHO carved digitalfaq's "opinions" in stone? TDK as 1st CLASS, i spit on that.

@everyone else...TY rocks~! :) cheers all

docTY~

I've come to realize how silly some stuff in that link as well. It's a good place to start for noobs, and a lot of the general info is good. Namely TY and Verb's=good CMC Mag=Frisbee's for Cerberus. I grow weary of that link as well. Until someone *cough cough DocTY *cough* puts together a more accurate, up-to-date Media guide, I'm afraid that's all there is... Cheers!

yeah the digitalfaq is def. flawed i will not be posting it anymore. because of where they rank TDK which is crap media . Kivory let me know when you get the new Plextor drive and how it works out not that i want to burn media at 18x but would like to know the results of what you come up with. seem like in the past 4x was the max. we wanted to burn with now it leans more towards 8x maybe in another year we will see 12x or 16 x being the norm.

Thank you aabbccdd, already tried there, only thing they have is a update to make the burner region free.

Hey Doc, I know what you mean, Sony is crap. I may have to buy him a early birthday present. Just thought I might put out a feeler if someone here knew where I could update it since I have had so much help from everyone from reading the forums. Afterdawn has saved me many many times.

I just ventured to the local K-Mart in search of MIJ Sony's. I picked up a 50 pack of MIJ Sony DVD+R's. Here's what DVD Identifier had to say:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unique Disc Identifier : [DVD+R:YUDEN000-T02-000]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disc & Book Type : [DVD+R] - [Not Available]
Manufacturer Name : [Taiyo Yuden Co. Ltd.]
Manufacturer ID : [YUDEN000]
Media Type ID : [T02]
Product Revision : [Not Specified]
Blank Disc Capacity : [2,295,104 Sectors = 4.70 GB (4.38 GiB)]
Recording Speeds : [1x-2.4x , 4x , 6x-8x]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ DVD Identifier V4.2.0 - http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

If only I wasn't poor, I could've bought a bunch of them. They had like 6 spindles of MIJ Sony DVD+R's. I've now got 160 TY's in reserve. Woohoo!

i think if people start a "donation-fund" to docTY inc. i would be willing to put together a more precise "media-faq" for the people to use...LOL

naturally, as biases come with ANY author of a website, i do have the database of thousands of discs that i have personally used and with the help of my friends, a few thousand more of more obscure media (ie. no-name manufacturers from all around the world) :)

well, such a task would be VERY difficult to say the least, it would require a LOT of time, but i have a close friend who is a website/graphic designer, so, that portion of it would be covered...hosting fees, time spent collecting and filing all the data would be the only MAIN CONCERN of mine in doing such a thing...

but, if enough people would be interested, i will def. consider getting something up for the benefit of all; might have to look for some sponsorship from supermediastore/rima/meritline/etc. to help defray the costs, but heck, i send enough people to supermediastore without ever collecting a red cent, that's the least they could do for me~ :)

@aabbccdd

will def. let you know once i get the newest Plextor, got a few months to wait before it's released, but you know me, i WILL max out my burners and see what this bad boy can really do...whether it be TY or Verbatim 16x rated discs, i will MAX IT OUT to see if overburning is possible on said media...

@rockyn

it's not so much that Sony is crap, it's just with their OEM line, their support is practically non-existent~ :) almost ALL of Sony's main line are rebadged drives anyways, the one i have, the Sony dru-710a is a rebadged Liteon-SOHW-1633S, the next model up is the dru-800a, which is a rebadge of yet ANOTHER drive that i own, the Liteon SOHW-1693S; then the most recent dru-810a is a rebadged Benq dw-1640, which i ALSO OWN, but under the Benq label~ :)

Sony has used Liteon to manufacturer MOST of their older models and only recently switching to Benq for the dru-810a, i've read that the newest Sony dru-820a is coming out soon, i don't know for sure WHO manufactures that drive at the present time...i'm hoping it's Benq again, using the same chipset as the Benq dw-1650 :)

any way you look at it, even under the Sony "brand", all their drives are rebadged this or that, namely Liteon and Benq...while i have had VERY good success with both these manufacturers of drives, it's Sony's OEM drives that are REALLY lacking in firmware, regardless of the fact that they are using the same chipset/manufacturer of their counterpart "retail dru-xxxa" model brothers/sisters~ :)

well, that's all for now...i'm in the process of building my newest rig, dual-core AMD setup...be back later.

have a good one all

docTY~
