Doc I have a couple questions. Will the MIJ Fujis, Sony's, Maxell's, and TDK's always code out as TYG02's? If so which kind, the DVD+R's or DVD-R's? Is there a way to tell for sure from the packaging? I'm looking to add a question to my PS2 FAQ about where to get high grade media locally, and I want to be as accurate as possible. Thank you. Cheers!

absolutely NOT~! as companies change manufacturers without a moment's notice, you can NOT state 100% that "if you go and buy x, y, and z company branded media, you WILL get Taiyo Yuden produced media" :)

that is the problem with buying media locally, when reports come in about someone getting Taiyo Yuden or whichever manufacturers media buying under a certain brand name...people start having FALSE assumptions that , "if he got it under that brand, then i will too"...this is NOT always the case as we have seen with Sony media~ made in japan or even made in taiwan...and also with my friend's case in purchasing 10 spindles of the TDK assuming he was going to get the Taiyo Yuden produced discs...(if you remember my little story, only 2 of the 10 packs were ACTUALLY TY media) :)

so, it's a good idea to add a FAQ about buying quality media locally for PS2s, but, you are asking for trouble when members go out and buy based on your suggestions, only to find that they DID NOT get what you claimed in your guide...just looking out for ya buddy, i deal with people getting "screwed" with buying brand A media, only to find they didn't get TYs when they got home and opened up the spindle~ :)

i just try to keep "up to date" as much as possible on the local retailer "brands" that do in fact use Taiyo Yuden as their manufacturer, however, what i said a month ago may no longer hold true a month from now as you can never REALLY KNOW which company will start using/change manufacturers down the road...

Okay. That's good to know. I checked the inner rings of the MIJ Sony DVD-R's that coded out as TYG02, and they indeed have the GG000xxx on the inner hub. The MIT Sony's have DRM5G8xxxx. Oh well I was hoping there would be some general rule of thumb for finding MIJ branded discs that coded out at TY's. But I'll just mention these manufacturers could code out as TY's, but the only way to know for certain is to order from reputable vendors online. Thanks again. Cheers!

not a prob, i just don't want to see you getting urself in a "bind" sorta speak, because i know a LOT of people rely on your knowledge for PS2 consoles/modding/etc...

but, GENERALLY speaking...if you are looking for Taiyo Yuden locally, then the "best bets" would be the MIJ spindles for 8x Fuji DVD-R and the 8x Fuji dvd+r/ and more recently as you have seen, the 8x MIJ Sony dvd-r(however this was NOT the case less than a month ago, both the MIT and MIJ Sony 8x DVD-R had Sony coding on them) and the Sony 8x DVD+R MIJ have been YUDEN000T02 too~ :)

as to the TDKs, i will not even say anything about that because i will never be the "guinea pig" and buy a MIJ TDK just to "see if it's made by TY" LOL...i might be compassionate to try new media, but not if it's TDK...personal bias of course~

Maxells, most likely NOT unless you find the MIJ 4x DVD-R Maxells, all the recent Maxells that are MIJ are made by Hitachi, good media in my opinion, but if you are looking for Taiyo Yuden ONLY, then Maxell's recent offerings will NOT have them~ :)

This is the end product, what do you think? Should I add/delete something? Thanks for your input.

106. Q. Where I can find top notch Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media locally?
A. This is somewhat of a crap shoot. Big manufacturer's like Fuji, Sony, TDK, and Maxell have at one point past or present payed Taiyo Yuden to manufacture media for them. The big companies slap there name on the label even though the discs were manufactured in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. These discs will always be made in Japan. Authentic TY media isn't made anywhere else. Even if it says Made in Japan on the label, there is no gauruntee of getting authentic Taiyo Yuden media. You could still end up with Sony or Fuji media codes. Hence why I said this is a crap shoot. Places like Comp USA, Office Depot, Sam's Club, and Staples will carry Made In Japan branded discs. Again there is no way to know for sure from the package whether these are authentic Taiyo Yuden's. If you don't want to risk getting non TY discs, you can find 50 packs of Verbatim in the afore mentioned chain stores. One other alternative is the Made in Japan High Grade Maxell DVD+R's. They will say Made in Japan on the label and "High Grade" as well. These are excellent media. Remember when using DVD+R's, it's best you have a burner that supports booktyping/bitsetting, and a v.4 PS2 or later. Much thanks goes to kivory666 aka "docTY" for this information. He is indeed the Taiyo Yuden master. The best place is to get authentic Taiyo Yuden media is from reputable online vendors like http://www.supermediastore.com http://www.rima.com or http://www.meritline.com

Hey docTy~,

I bought some Sony (MIJ) codes out as taiyo yudens. These are 8x media, and i have a liteon SHW-160P6S with updated firmware. What speed should i burn this media..4x? or 2.4x? I burned one at 2.4x and did a test with Nero and had a quality score of 95.

Also, I know you said companies can change who manufactures their media at anytime, but do you know if Sony MIJ will keep being made by Taiyo Yuden? I hope so

berger103,

I'll give you my opinion and I think the doc will agree. I wouldn't burn any 8x ty or verbatim media at anything under 4x (except with DL media or backing up a game). A lot of times you will find that 8x or 16x rated ty or verbatim media will actually have fewer pie and pif errors if burned at 8x.

i COMPLETELY agree w/ Mort81...i suggest burning them @8x also on genuine TYs or Verbatims that are rated @ 8x or 16x :P i have both the Liteon SOHW-1633S and the SOHW-1693S and burn my TYs @8x for MY best results :)

your results might be slightly different due to the burner you are using, but Liteons in general from my experience, have the best results burning @8x~ :)

for the most part, i think Sony will continue to use Taiyo Yuden in their 8x rated MIJ spindles, that seems to be the trend lately...for everyone's sake, i hope TY will continue to supply Sony as well as Fuji for their MIJ branded media~good luck

docTY~

edit @tokijin looks pretty good to me, newegg as mort mentioned is also a reliable seller of quality media and their "free 3 day shipping"/low cost shipping on items takes the cake~ :)

That's there more for reference. I would never advise anybody to buy TDK's. There are TY made TDK's, but it's not worth the risk. Not just from doc's experiences, but my also from my own dealing with people who can't get games to boot on the TTHxx or TTGxx media. As soon as people copied onto other discs, low and behold it works. Cheers!

very good comments here by all~ :) i had a feeling the "TDK" were put there for reference purposes only, but it's not MY FAQ..hehehe...

my friend (from the story i had earlier in the thread) that got a bunch of TDKs is now having some major issues...now, "i told you so" just doesn't do it justice at this point~ LOL

anyways, keep the good info coming...off to work again, just wanted to stop by and say hello to everyone~

"No more TDK for me" is EXACTLY what he is saying to me on the phone, it's not nice to laugh at someone's media demise, but i can't help it in HIS case...LOL
